A. Introduction

The assessment of students’ achievement represents an integral part of the school curriculum.

Assessment is connected to the school’s philosophy and educational goals. It is also connected to the

professional development of staff and is integrated into a well-designed and documented process. The

overall goal of that process is the quality assurance and rigorousness of students’ performance, and

thus reliable achievement data to inform improvement of teaching and learning and the students’

academic achievement.

B. Grading System (Grades 1, 2 &3)

The school adopts a continuous assessment system, using various assessment tools to

evaluate the students according to the following:

Standards Score

Skills and competencies 60

Homework 10

Monthly tests 30

Total 100

Grades 1, 2 and 3 students will have six assessments all over the year; three in each term. The

average of each three assessments is the result of the term; while the average of the two terms

will be the end-of-year result.

NB.: The 60 marks are distributed differently from one subject to another according to the skills and

competencies required by each subject as shown below:

Curve up equation:

For grade 10 IGCSE students, the curving up is applied for the end-of-term exam and it is calculated as follows:

The earned score is the quotient of the achieved score by the benchmark multiplied by 40.

The benchmark is the mean mark (the average of the lowest and highest passing mark in class) or

the average of the class.

Students who score ≥ the benchmark, will get 40 out of 40.

This rule is applicable only for End-of-Term exams.

Earned Score:

Achieved Score × 40

Benchmark

Eg.: if the benchmark is 75 and the student’s achieved score is 70, the equation will be as follows 70x40 /75 = 37.5 out of 40

The end-of-term exam (30%)

It will be taken by grade 11 students at the end of each term and only at the end of term 1 for grade12.

In term 2, grade 12 students will have a Mock Exam which will be counted as the end-of-term exam mark.

Curve up equation:

For grade 11 and 12 IB students, the earned score is the quotient of the achieved score by the

benchmark multiplied by 30.

The benchmark is the mean mark (the average of the lowest and highest passing mark in class) or the

average of the class.

Students who score ≥ the benchmark will get 30 out 0f 30. This rule is applicable only for End-of-Term

exams.

Earned Score:

Achieved Score × 30

Benchmark

Eg.: if the benchmark is 75 and the student’s achieved score is 70, the equation will be as follows 70x30 /75 = 28 out of 40
