Global Surveillance for FMD
Distribution of the seven endemic pools of FMD showingthe predominant viral serotypes that are present in eachregion, as well as the conjectured status of FMD incountries.
Virology submissions to Pirbright
October 2013 – March 2015 (period of current WRLFMD LoA)
• 874 samples received from 34 countries
• 101 no virus detected and 219 only rRT-PCR positive
• Gaps still remain in the East and West African pools.
• No serotype C since 2004
• Additional sequence exchange with China, Russia and India
• Reports for these samples can be found at: www.wrlfmd.org

FMD Outbreaks in Rep of KoreaDecember 2014 – on-going
• New outbreaks (O/SEA/Mya-98)
• Sequence data indicates another
introduction into SKR
• 2 in 2014?
• 3+ in 2010?
• Does this provide an indication of the
severity of “infectious pressure” in the
country?
• 121 outbreaks since
December
• Majority of cases in pigs
• Vaccinated ?
Recent SamplesBahrain, Mauritania and Oman
• Bahrain (2015)
• O/ME-SA/Ind2001
• Mauritania (2014)
• SAT 2 (topotype VII)
• Distinct from FMD viruses from Egypt and Libya (2012)
• Oman (2015)
• SAT 2 – genotyping in progress

Post Vaccination Monitoring Guidelines (PVM)
Coordination:
WG of the OIE-FAO FMD Reference Laboratory Network, with associated experts
Objective:
To describe methodologies to use PVM in different epidemiological situations with regard to FMD status in a country.
Outputs:
To produce a GF-TADs guideline of 5 chapters (the role of the veterinary services, vaccine attributes, delivery, coverage, measure antibody response and effectiveness of vaccination programs)
Principles equally applicable to PPR global program
Members: OIE/FAO FMD Laboratory network
• WRLFMD: Pirbright, UK
• RRLSEA: Pakchong, Thailand
• LVRI: Lanzhou, China
• FGI ARRIAH: Vladimir, Russia
• PDFMD: Mukteswar, India
• RRLSSA: Gabarone, Botswana
• FMD-Lab: Embakasi, Kenya
• PANAFTOSA: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
• LFADLCT: Argentina
• ARC-OVI: Onderstepoort, RSA
• PIADC: Plum Island, USA
• CODA-CERVA: Ukkel, Belgium
1. To understand global virus distribution and
patterns and provide vaccine recommendations
2. To improve the quality of laboratory testing
carried out by international and national
reference laboratories.
Progress on the implementation of the Global FMD Control Strategy
25
FAO-OIE Global FMD Control Strategy, since 2012
- Developed in consultation with FMD experts and representatives of key countries and regional organizations
- Fifteen-year plan with five-year increments
- Implementation tasked and coordinated by GF-TADs FMD WG
(meets every 2-3 months)

Endorsement of
FMD Control
programme
FMD – applications for adoption
Resolution No. 17
• FMD country free without vaccination:– Philippines
• FMD free zone with vaccination:– Ecuador
• FMD free zone without vaccination:– Ecuador
– Botswana (4 zones)
– Kazakhstan
Resolution No. 18
• Endorsement of FMD Control programs for FMD:– Namibia, Venezuela, China, India
Expert missions to Member countries to assess the maintenance of disease-free status
• Resolution #25 of the 80th General Session provides mandate to SCAD and approval by DG to visit applicant countries and verify maintenance of status
• Need to assess maintenance of free status as reflected in annual confirmations – OIE credibility.
• South Africa and India visited during 2014 and 2015
• Positive response in almost all Member Countries visited – established government support for the application of OIE standards for FMD control (e.g. South America, South Africa)
