The Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles are tied for the longest active Opening Day winning streaks, having each won seven consecutive lid-lifters. According to Elias it’s the Dodgers’ longest opening day winning streak since they won eight straight from 1919 to 1927 in Brooklyn. The Dodgers scored 14 runs in the opener, a worthy encore to their 15-run outburst on Opening Day 2016. According to Elias, only one other team in history scored 14 or more runs in back-to-back season openers: the Chicago Cubs in 2005 (beat the Diamondbacks, 16-6) and 2006 (beat the Reds,16-7). The Dodgers went 11-8 against the Padres last season and have not lost the season series to San Diego since going 8- 10 in 2010. Since the start of the 2011 campaign, Los Angeles is 73-40 (.646) against the Padres, including a 38- 19 (.667) mark at Dodger Stadium. POWER SURGE: The Dodgers hit an Opening Day franchise- record four home runs yesterday, including their first grand slam on Opening Day since 2000. Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal hit two homers, one from each side of the plate, becoming just the third player in big league history to accomplish the feat on Opening Day (SOURCE: Elias Sports Bureau.) The others (Arizona’s Tony Clark and Felipe Lopez) both did it on the same day: April 6, 2009. Grandal was the first Dodger to hit two homers in a game on Opening Day since Raul Mondesi did so on April 5, 1999 vs. Arizona. MAEDA-SAN: Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda makes his first start of 2017 this evening as he enters his second Major League season, following a year in which he finished third in the NL Rookie of the Year balloting. Maeda went 16-11 with a 3.48 ERA in 32 starts in 2016, including a memorable Major League debut (April 6, 2016) in San Diego, where he fired 6.0 scoreless innings and belted a solo home run in his second at-bat. Maeda’s 16 wins last year were the second-most wins ever by a Los Angeles rookie behind only Rick Sutcliffe (17-10, 1979) and tied for the second most ever in a single-season by a Japanese pitcher. He capped off his rookie season by leading qualifying MLB rookie starting pitchers in starts (32), wins (16), opponents’ batting average (.299), WHIP (1.14) and innings pitched (175.2) TAKE A BOW, KERSH: Dodger ace Clayton Kershaw ran his Opening Day record to 5-0 yesterday, and according to Elias, becomes just the ninth pitcher in Major League history to start at least 5-0 in openers. Of the others, three are enshrined in Cooperstown: Greg Maddux (6-0), Tom Seaver (6-0) and Randy Johnson (5-0). Kershaw also tied Hall of Famer Don Drysdale for the most Opening Day victories in franchise history. THE CLOSER: Last year, Dodger closer Kenley Jansen became just the third NL pitcher all-time (since saves became an official statistic in 1969) to record at least 45 saves and 100 strikeouts in the same season: NL, Pitchers: 45+ Saves & 100+ Strikeouts in Season – All-Time Season Pitcher, Team Saves Strikeouts 2002 Eric Gagné, LAD 52 114 2003 Eric Gagné, LAD^ 55 137 2004 Eric Gagné, LAD 45 114 2011 Craig Kimbrel, Atl 46 127 2016 Kenley Jansen, LAD^^ 47 104 ^ Won NL Cy Young Award ^^ Won Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year Award SOURCE: STATS, LLC A LOOK BACK: The Dodgers posted a 91-71 record in 2016, en route to their fourth consecutive division title and a trip to the NLCS, their fourth appearance in the LCS in the last nine years since 2008. It marked the first time in franchise history that the Dodgers reached postseason play in four straight seasons, and they became the first club in NL West history to win the division four years in a row. Los Angeles won 90+ games for the fourth consecutive season, a feat that had only previously been accomplished once in team history, 1951-56 (6). THE ROSTER: Two Dodgers are due congratulations for making their first active Opening Day rosters, as Grant Dayton and Andrew Toles took part in their very first Opening Day yesterday. Of the 25 active players who appear on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster, 17 were also members of the club’s 2016 NLCS roster against the Cubs. Sunday, the Dodgers placed five players on the 10-day DL, retroactive to March 30 (Pedro Báez, Andre Ethier, Scott Kazmir, Josh Ravin and Brock Stewart), who join Yimi Garcia (60-day DL) in comprising the club’s six-man DL. Of the 25 players on the Dodger roster, nine countries are represented (Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela). THE DOC IS IN: Dodger skipper Dave Roberts is at the beginning of his second season as the Dodger manager, following a 2016 campaign in which he was named National League Manager of the Year for his work in guiding Los Angeles to its’ fourth-consecutive NL West Division title, despite having 28 different players spend time on the disabled list. That was the most for any team in the last 30 years since at least 1987. Roberts became just the second rookie manger ever to lead Los Angeles to a Division title, joining Tommy Lasorda (1977). He also joins Lasorda (1983, ’88) as the only Dodger skippers to ever win the Manager of the Year Award since its inception in 1983. The rest of the Dodger coaching staff remains intact from last season: pitching coach Rick Honeycutt (12 th season); bench coach Bob Geren (2 nd season); hitting coach Turner Ward (2 nd season); first base coach George Lombard (2 nd season); third base coach Chris Woodward (2 nd season); bullpen coach Josh Bard (2 nd season); assistant hitting coach Tim Hyers (2 nd season); quality assurance coach Juan Castro (2 nd season); and catching instructor Steve Yeager (6 th season). WHAT A SPRING: The Dodgers set a Camelback Ranch-Glendale record this spring for total attendance for the third consecutive year (165,911 in 17 home dates), besting last year’s mark of 155,841. HEY SLUGGER: Prior to the game tonight, Dodger Rookie of the Year Corey Seager will receive his 2016 Louisville Silver Slugger Award. Seager was voted the top offensive shortstop by the coaches and managers last season after hitting .308 with 26 homers, 72 RBI and an OPS of .877. BIG WINNERS: Yesterday, The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation set a Dodger Stadium record with a $76,895 jackpot for the 50/50 raffle on Opening Day, beating the previous record of $72,855 from Game 4 of the NLCS last year.
