We are blessed with a thriving Youth Program that is most worthy of our support.
We support each other through congregational care and adult education.
We are called upon to serve in partnership with our many fine community non-profit organizations like Circles of the Heartland, The Ashby House, United Way, to name just a few.
Our reach is felt nationally and internationally with our support of Presbyterian (USA) and our mission trips to Guatemala.
We have a wonderful, but aging facility, in which to worship and be in community with one another. Let’s maintain its beauty and its functionality.
Together, let’s keep the Buzz from “Bee the Church” going with our time, our talents and our strong
financial support.

Adult Education Opportunities
Coming this fall to First Presbyterian Church: a variety of classes,
topics, and forums for Adult Education! All are invited to sign-up
for classes and to purchase books for some of the classes this fall. Please email [email protected] with
any questions or comments. This committee meets the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the
Hope Room.
“Peas in a Pod” on Display for another 2-4 weeks Please come and view Carolyn Wedel’s artwork! Her 12-piece work of art entitled “Peas in a Pod,” which depicts
that at the core of our being, we are equal and one in the same, will be on display in the Hope Room for another 2-4
weeks. The Adult Education Committee welcomes craftsmen and artists among us to consider presenting and
sharing their works of art with our congregation, particularly those that may lead to theological and faithful
conversation about what it means to live out Christ’s commandments in our world today. Please contact us at
Sunday Morning Adult Education Class: 9 am in the Hope Room For the five Sundays in October, our Sunday morning class will use a DVD series on religion, morality and politics
called “Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White” by Adam Hamilton. Led by members of the Adult Education
Committee, this series will include a DVD clip of United Methodist Pastor Adam Hamilton teaching, followed by
lots of class discussion using a study guide. Session topics include: Faith and Politics, Christians and the Culture
Wars, The Ethics of Jesus, Spiritual Maturity, and “What Would Jesus Say to America?” We hope you will join us
for this timely study as we seek to engage in thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that
divide us. No book is necessary, just drop in for one or all the classes.
On November 6th
and 13th, we will watch and discuss the 2013 documentary film, Girl Rising. This film is an
informative, educational documentary about the lives of impoverished girls living in countries where education for
girls isn't a priority. Directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Richard Robbins (Operation Homecoming) and
narrated by A-list stars including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Selena Gomez, the film explores the dangerous
inequalities that girls and young women face in parts of the world.
November 20th
through December 18th, we will study the themes of Advent using “Illuminating Advent” by
Donald McKim. On Sunday, December 11th, we will take a break from the Advent class to meet in the Parlor for our
annual Advent Trivia game for all youth and adults! We will carry on with the Advent class, including Christmas
morning, at 9 a.m. and Jan.1, 2017.
Coming in 2017: “Journeys Through Revelation: Apocalyptic Hope for Today” by Barbara R. Rossing. We
will meet from Jan. 8th to Feb. 26th in this study full of mysterious symbolism and poetry. Each lesson includes art
created specifically for this study, to enrich the experience of revealing God’s word for us.
Women’s Bible Study: 5:30 pm in the Hope Room Our women’s Bible Study will resume meeting on the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in October. All
women are welcome to join us for this year’s study called “Who Is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens Makes” by Judy
Yates Siker. We will explore Jesus through the lenses of different biblical authors (Mark, Matthew, Luke, John,
Paul, the Hebrews), as well as through the non-canonical gospels, the other Abrahamic faiths, and contemporary
cultural interpretations. Author Judy Yates Siker invites us to join her on “a journey to expand our understanding of
who Jesus was and is—a journey of our hearts and our minds, a journey that we will take together. We invite you to
be good conversation partners along the way, sharing with one another how you see and experience the various
lenses and how these different perspectives impact your understanding of who Jesus is.” Study books are available
in the church office for $10 each. This class will meet for nine months, through June 5, 2017.
There was great turnout, great enthusiasm -- and great outcomes -- from FPC's Bee the
Church Sunday. Backpacks were assembled, notes were written, treats were delivered,
yardwork was accomplished, boxes of paperwork were recycled, and even gutters were
cleaned. It was all a demonstration of worship as mission, and of preaching with our
hands and feet. Thanks to all who participated!

Walk to Bethlehem
Let the journey begin…
Diana Smith and Brigid Hall, with able assistance on Sundays from Linda Johnson and Jo Buchanan, are your
coordinators for our...
2016 Walk to Bethlehem (W2B)
Do not stop reading even if you are not a “sporty” person!
We will be awarding miles for “sporty” and “non-sporty” activities. “Sporty” includes things like
walking, running, bicycling, yoga, all kinds of school sports practice sessions, (not games/matches),
the school marathon, seated aerobics, physical therapy, tennis and golf (walking the course,
thank you!). “Non-sporty” miles include FBI/CIA/SWAT gatherings, HeBrews, Sunday
School and other Bible studies. We think everyone can find a way to participate AND we
will need every mile we can get to cover the thousands of land and sea miles we have in
front of us.
So, here are all the details for you. Learn them off by heart. There may be a quiz later.
The dates for this year’s walk are Saturday, October 1 – Friday, December 23. We are not going to extend it
beyond those dates, so we have three months to get there.
Be on the lookout for the W2B Display somewhere between the donut holes and the coffee after worship on
Sundays. Because of everything going on in and around the church, the first time you will see the display is on
Sunday, October 2nd. (Yes, that’s the second day of our journey, but we think you can handle it.)
Please register at the display on any Sunday beginning October 2 to start the walk. (You can certainly call one
of us to register, too, if you are missing some of the early October Sundays.) At the display, you will find the
materials to help you track your miles, including passports if you choose to use them, and the information
about activities and the miles you accrue as you do them.
We will track our progress on the display and also provide information about the places you are going along the
route. We will be “stamping” your passports on Sundays, too.
There will be at least three ways to report your mileage:
1. At the display each Sunday
2. Via a link contained in the W2B update in the Weekly Announcements emailed to you each week by
the church
3. By emailing or calling Brigid Hall directly
On your marks, get set, COUNT YOUR MILES!
Yoga time is a spiritual time for
breathing, stretching, meditating, and
praying together. Join Cathy Hayes and
other women and men for yoga on
Wednesdays from 5-6 pm. A suggested
donation of $5, but is not required. All
levels of ability are welcome.

A New Worship Service at FPC?
World Communion Sunday
“All who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves.” (1 Cor. 11:29)
The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. Paul tells us that we are to “discern the body” when we partake of Holy Communion, mindful that we note our relationship to all our brothers and sisters in Christ in the celebration. One is not to go hungry while another is drunk! (1 Cor. 11:21). This is scandalous behavior opposed to the Way of Christ. Thus it is appropriate that World Communion Sunday is also a time when we receive the annual Peace and Global Witness Offering of the Presbyterian Church (USA) as a way of continuing the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need.
World Communion Sunday is a gift of the Presbyterian Church to the larger ecumenical church. The first celebration occurred at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1933.
Yes, starting January 4th, FPC will be offering a new worship service -It’s called Mid-Week Manna!
Midweek Manna is a new worship time on Wednesday evenings, starting on January 4, 2017. It is an opportunity for the people of God to gather beyond Sunday and be nourished by dinner and worship. This builds our understanding of God’s word in an exciting, interactive format while providing the opportunity for worship and fellowship.
Dinner will be provided during Midweek Manna each week, with a donation basket to help cover the cost.
This service will have a more contemporary feel and will be led by a Worship Team. If you are interested in being part of the Midweek Manna Worship Team please inquire with Charlie or Tricia.
This is a very exciting time at FPC! This new opportunity will hopefully lead to other new opportunities for our church to continue to grow! Come check it out!
Donate to the Presbyterian Manor Soup Supper!
Salina Presbyterian Manor's 36th annual Soup Supper will be held Friday, Oct. 21st. Proceeds from this fund-raiser will be used to support the Good Samaritan Fund. Presbyterian Manor is asking FPC members to donate 3-4 fruit pies in honor of church members who live at the Manor. The deadline for notification is Wednesday, Oct. 5th.
Fellow Man International Mission of Honduras
The annual choir concert and auction to support Fellow Man International Mission of Honduras will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Salina on November 6th at 6 p.m. Lisa Armstrong will provide an update on Mission activities through projected pictures and comments. Choirs from three churches
will present a concert and the three keyboard church musicians will add their musical offerings. A dessert fellowship will follow the concert and the auctions will follow that.
The silent and live auctions will feature original jewelry by Jeanne Sebree, a painting by Sylvia Phillips, a barn wood crèche with porcelain figures in the style of Frank McBride; use of condo at Breckenridge and use of a house at Estes Park; Central American craft items; Honduran vanilla; a "hard quilt" (wooden outdoor decoration); a lodge for a pheasant hunting experience; a creative welded outdoor decoration; an original purse; an original ceramic piece; a family portrait setting and 16 X 20 enlargement; and other attractive items. The most interesting part will be auctioning support for the salaries of the employees of Fellow Man International Mission. A SKYPE connection with the Mission employees will be used so they can observe the auction in Salina.
If you wish to contribute an item to the auction, please notify the person in your church prepared to help fit it in with the other items (no garage sale items), only items of artistic quality or high utility, please: Rhonda Bird 785-309-5104, 785-493-2224. Items are to be brought to First United Methodist, November 5th between 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Pastor Charlie upholds two family traditions during each Sunday service. The first is the prayer that he says just
before beginning his sermon:
God be in my head, and in my understanding God be in my eyes, and in my looking God be in my mouth, and in my speaking God be in my heart, and in my thinking God be at my end, and at my departing
The prayer comes from the Sarum Primer of 1514, a book of prayers and Christian worship resources in the Roman
Catholic Church that was collected by the clergy at England’s Salisbury Cathedral. (Sarum is the abbreviation for
“Sarisburium,” the Latin word for Salisbury.) The prayer has been put to music, and the Episcopal hymn using those
words, sung weekly at the church in which Charlie grew up, was a favorite of his father’s.
There is also a story of family ties connected to the stole worn in Sunday services by Pastor
Charlie. It is the Johnston tartan and is in homage to his mother’s family heritage. (Diana’s
Scottish heritage is extensive on her mother’s side through the Urquhart clan.)
If you, too, claim Scottish heritage – or even if you don’t – we can all be Scots for a day
on Sunday, October 30th
, when we’ll celebrate Reformation Sunday with a Kirkin’ o’ the
Tartan service, complete with a bagpiper. While the service is an American invention, its
roots are said to stretch back to the 1746 Act of Proscription in Scotland, when the wearing
of the kilt was banned in the Highlands. According to legend, Scots hid pieces of tartan and
brought them to be secretly blessed at a particular point in the service. So grab your sash or
tie to present your tartan at the service this year!
Mark Your Calendars for
Throwback Sunday: November 6
First Presbyterian Church is a treasure trove of mementos. Recently, a
worship bulletin was found from 1927, just a few years after the church’s
cornerstone was laid in 1922. Inspired by that discovery, a “Throwback
Sunday” worship service is being planned for November 6th to mark All
Saints’ Day and honor our saints who have been members of the church
for 50 years and longer. The worship service will attempt to follow what’s
in the ’27 bulletin, though that presents some unique challenges! Those
who attend the service are encouraged to dress in 1920s period clothing.
Stuck for an idea? The subtitle for that Sunday will be “Bonnets and Bow
Ties.” See what you can find in your closet, or at the nearby rental shop!

Let the Bells Ring!
If you are interested in being part of a bell choir at FPC, I want to know! Playing bells is fun, does not require any in depth musical training, and is a great way to enjoy fellowship with church members and contribute to worship. At this point, I am trying to determine whether we start an Adult Bell Choir AND a Youth Bell Choir or perhaps we have a multigenerational group.
SO....if you or your son/daughter is interested in RINGING, please get in touch with Richard Koshgarian, Choir Director, at [email protected].
