Edie Walker - Pat on the Back [Edie is a long-time square dance enthusiast, with a “sure fire make-you-smile” laugh. Let’s learn her story…]
I started square dancing in 1964 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I can’t remember the name of the club, but I do remember that between tips we sold beer to support our club activities. (After all, this was Wisconsin, where kids are allowed in taverns, and a tavern is considered a family hangout) In 1964, I was attending night class to get my high school diploma when one of the friends I made told me she and her husband were going to go to a beginners’
class and asked if I would go with them. The obvious answer was YES, and 54 years later I’m still dancing. (I did have a seven-year time-out, but came back). Because my husband was an office manager for a construction company, we moved all over the U.S. We danced everywhere we lived, but I can hardly remember those places we lived, much less the clubs’ names . . . Let’s just say there were lots. Later, we settled in southern California. I learned Advanced from Mike Kellogg, Johnny Preston, and George Monaghan. C1 instruction was from Vic Kaaria, and I can’t remember who else. I have danced C1 with Romney Tannehill for years. My C2 instructors are Michael Bandoian and Jane Clewe. I regularly dance with Romney’s Stars on Tuesdays, and support Trailblazers, PACE, Phantom Squares, and when possible Magic Squares in San Diego. I love attending PACE Extravaganza, but haven’t gone in a few years. You see, I get a week off for Thanksgiving break, and I would rather find somewhere to go scuba diving. I’ve attended Romney’s weekends and had a great time at them. Scuba diving is my passion and I go whenever I get a chance to drag Connie along with me (Thank you Roger). In

Edie Walker (continued from page 5) order to do this, I have to continue to work. I teach math, science and marine science to sixth graders at South Gate Middle School. I’ve taught for only 18 years so I still love it, and I think I’ve gotten good at it. I will continue teaching until I stop having fun or quit diving, whichever comes first. When they were little, all of my children square danced and performed on a dance team; they were as cute as they could be in their little gingham skirts and shirts. Of course, we all know my daughter, Connie Thousand, still square dances. She and her husband, Roger, dance at the C4 level. Right now, I am attempting to get proficient at the C2 level, and it is my favorite level so far. Not only is it very challenging, but now Connie and Roger will come and dance with me. The first time I attended a C1 dance was at PACE before they changed the format and dropped C1 sessions. Connie and Roger took me to celebrate my graduation from California State University, Dominguez Hills with my Masters in Education. Connie set up squares for me with all of the high-level dancers so I could be successful. The thing everyone kept telling me was, “Breathe, Edie, breathe.” It was a great day. `Square Dancing has allowed me to become involved in a social activity regardless of where I lived. It is an instant activity to meet people and make new friends. It continues to fulfill that mission today. I feel sad that we are not getting more new people in our beginner’s classes. If we lose square dancing, we will be losing an American icon and there will be nothing that can replace it. [What a joy to dance and laugh with Edie…and I might add, be one of her “Dive Buddies”]
