Preparing artists for success in the 21 st century NEWS FROM SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC FALL 2013, VOLUME 7, NO. 1 FALL 2013 1 Double Bass Triple-Threat Voice department chair Catherine Cook took on a second leading role this fall, winning raves for her appearance in the world premiere production of Tobias Picker’s Dolores Claiborne at San Francisco Opera. Cook sang two performances after mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick withdrew, citing knee problems and the role’s demands. Opera Today critic James Sohre wrote, “To say that Ms. Cook was a revelation is an understatement, since she stamped the part as her own, and experienced a triumph for her sensational performance.” Portraying a woman forced to protect her daughter from an abusive husband, Cook had to navigate dramatic and vocal extremes. Nevertheless, Sohre said, “the writing fit Ms. Cook like a glove and there was nothing she seemed not able to do to perfection.” Cook, the Conservatory’s Frederica von Stade Distinguished Chair in Voice, returned to San Francisco Opera this fall as Berta in The Barber of Seville and sang at the Metropolitan Opera last spring. She regularly invites opera house colleagues to help teach Audition Workshop for Singers, a course she created, and frequently is asked to share her own insights. “The best advice I ever got was when I won the Met auditions in New York and the judge said to me, ‘You have fantastic instincts. Don’t let anyone ever coach them out of you.’ I say that to my students all the time. You’re never going to please everybody. And that’s why you have to know what you do best and do that.” Cook Takes the Lead (continued on page 3) Tian Yang Liu ’13 may not come across as a formidable competitor. Students Around TownStudents have been breaking down Conservatory walls in recent weeks to perform across San Francisco. Noble Trumpets, led by trumpet faculty and San Francisco Symphony principal Mark Inouye, played Inouye’s arrangement of the National Anthem at a Giants-Dodgers game. A block of electric guitarists with battery-powered amps led by guitar department chair David Tanenbaum and New Music Ensemble players led by assistant conductor Jacques Desjardins stormed Chrissy Field in October (along with 800 other musicians) for the “massive, spatialized symphony” Chrissy Broadcast.

And the International Low Brass Trio took it to the street before the Orchestra’s season opener, luring passers-by with their bottom-heavy blend of classics, jazz and pop from a portable stage outside 50 Oak Street.

Illinois Summons Choi Artist Certificate candidate Alicia Choi is taking a leave of absence to join the Larchmere String Quartet, quartet in residence with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. As part of the gig, she becomes the orchestra’s associate concertmaster and adjunct faculty at Evansville University. Choi was the Conservatory’s first recipient of the Sam and Colin Murdoch Chamber Music Scholarship and a student of former faculty member Axel Strauss.

To the P-DOC! Stat!Students can now hatch career plans from a sixth-floor aerie under the eagle-eyed watch of MaryClare Brzytwa (second from left, above), the Conservatory’s new assistant dean for professional development and academic technology. The P-DOC (or Professional Development and Outreach Center) offers training in grant writing, web design and other career strategies, including how to write a good ol’ resume.

with first prize in one hand and an award for best performance of the required piece in the other.

Scott Pingel, principal bassist with the San Francisco Symphony and Liu’s teacher, says it’s hard to overstate his achievement. “He was the only bassist studying in the U.S. to even make the finals. It is a very big deal in the bass world.”

Pingel praises his student for “great passion and fearlessness in his performing.” Liu displayed both when he played A Carmen Fantasy by Frank Proto at the International Double Bass Solo Competition three years ago. The flamboyant work stood out among the evening’s lineup of double-bass concertos. Liu won the Audience Choice Award and stuck by the piece; it was part of his victorious performance at ISB.

Liu is a cross-over artist by both temperament and necessity. He says, “I want to play solo but it’s a little hard on bass.” He spices his repertoire with pieces like Sarasate’s violin showpiece Zigeunerweisen and the nightclub standard Misty, both of which he’ll record in January for a broadcast of public radio’s Performance Today.

Liu’s goals encompass solo, chamber and orchestral work, an appearance at SFJazz, perhaps, and following in his father’s steps as a teacher. Pingel encourages him to be versatile. “Tian has many natural capabilities, but just as important, he has the tenacity to be very successful.” Liu seems content to pursue a variety of paths, with one minor exception. “I’m probably going to stop doing competitions.”

A Plume for PaiementNew Music Ensemble director Nicole Paiement has been elected to the board of OPERA America, a national organization that supports the creation and presentation of opera. Paiement is artistic director of Opera Parallèle, an award-winning professional company in residence at the Conservatory that develops and performs contemporary chamber opera. She holds the Conservatory’s Jean and Josette Deleage Distinguished Chair in New Music.

Fresh & FamiliarFacesA host of new collegiate faculty joins the Conservatory this fall. They include Erick Arenas and Giacomo Fiore ’09 (music history and literature); the San Francisco Symphony’s Steven Braunstein (contrabassoon); Ryan Brown ’05 (composition seminar and workshop); Minna Choi ’09 and Anna-Christina Phillips ’10 (musical startups); Nicholas Gabriel (beginning acting); returning faculty member Bonnie Hampton (string and piano chamber music); pre-college faculty members Carmen Lemoine ’05 (woodwind chamber music) and Li Lin (violin); Nicholas Pavkovic ’11 (musicianship and theory); and San Francisco Symphony members Jerome Simas (bass clarinet) and James Lee Wyatt III (timpani and percussion).

On May 3, Tian Yang Liu plays one of his favorite things with the Conservatory Orchestra: Frank Proto’s A Carmen Fantasy.

Hugh Trutton played piano at clubs, funerals, burlesque shows and in concert before pursuing careers as a record distributor, art gallery director and data communications consultant. Hugh still plays piano . . . and hopes to get it right someday.

‘Art isn’t easy,’ Stephen Sondheim wrote in Sunday in the Park with George, to which I add, ‘It isn’t cheap, either.’ What better way to support tomorrow’s music than to provide

a legacy that promotes the exceptional talents of Conservatory students.

Hugh Trutton and horn player at Bavaria’s Herrenchiemsee.

The Board of Trustees welcomes two members back to its fold this fall. Pianist Rebecca-Sen Chan has performed at the Interlochen, Banff and Aspen music festivals. She recently released a CD of Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas and performed chamber music concerts in Europe and China. Chan regularly teaches master classes at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where she also serves on the Board of Trustees. Chan last served as a Conservatory trustee from 1999-2008.

Dr. Jane Chang Tom has served on the boards of the Head-Royce and College Prep schools in Oakland, International House at the University of California, Berkeley, the Chinese Newcomers Service Center in San Francisco and the Mental Health Advisory Board of California. She is a commissioner of San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum and president of both S&A Tom Family Foundation and S&A Tom, Inc., a company that invests in commercial properties. A retired clinical psychologist, Tom previously served as a Conservatory trustee from 1998-2008.

In memoriam

Former San Francisco Opera general director Lotfi Mansouri passed away on August 29. He worked frequently with Conservatory students, teaching master classes and, in 2012, producing Trio Appasionato, a “salon” of music by Brahms and Robert and Clara

Schumann featuring Trustee Advisory Board member Frederica von Stade. He also championed San Francisco Opera’s commission of The Dangerous Liaisons by faculty composer Conrad Susa. Mansouri was a member of the Conservatory’s Ada Clement Legacy Society and Trustee Advisory Board.

Conservatory Society member Jeannik Méquet Littlefield passed away on May 24. Fluent in French, German and Russian, Littlefield interrupted Ph.D. studies in linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, to serve as a translator during World War II. She sponsored productions and served on the board of San Francisco Opera, sponsored exhibits at the Legion of Honor and de Young museums, and supported numerous educational institutions including the Conservatory.

Renowned jazz, R&B and pop pioneer George Duke (B.M., trombone and composition, ’67) died on August 5. Duke enjoyed a multi-faceted career as a composer, arranger, director and producer. He released some 30 solo albums and collaborated with artists including Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, Michael Jackson and Frank Zappa. Duke won two Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album as the producer for Dianne Reeves’ In The Moment (2000) and The Calling (2001). He died of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Demutsky’s BOLD StatementIn a compositional coup, Ilya Demutsky (M.M., composition, ’09) won a top European competition and took a bold political stand. His piece The Closing Statement of the Accused for mezzo-soprano and orchestra took first prize at the International Composing Competition 2 Agosto. Demutsky accepted his medal from the president of Italy at a ceremony in Bologna. The work is based on defiant remarks made by a member of a Russian feminist punk band at a controversial trial which ended in her imprisonment. Band members were arrested after a performance protesting President Vladimir Putin’s election campaign. Demutsky, a resident of St. Petersburg, called the piece a “requiem for the Russian judicial system” according to a recent profile in The St. Petersburg Times. He studied with David Conte.

A Tale Takes WingChildren’s stories often go hand-in-hand with music. But a project conceived in part by soprano Lisa Delan (B.M., voice, ’89) hyperlinks this classic formula. Angel Heart is the story of Luna, a broken-hearted girl rescued by a guardian angel, told in an animated book, a star-studded CD, an iPad app and concert premieres this fall at Cal Performances and Carnegie Hall. Delan and composer Luna Pearl Woolf enlisted author Cornelia Funke to write a story incorporating songs by Irving Berlin and the Beatles, among others, plus original music, all scored to ethereal effect for the ensemble Uccello led by pre-college alumnus Matt Haimovitz. Stars include narrator Jeremy Irons and Conservatory Trustee Advisory Board member and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. Conservatory performers also make cameos. They include faculty conductor Michael Morgan, leading the children’s choir of Oakland’s St. Martin De Porres School, baritone Bruce Rameker (B.M., voice, ’87) and Delan herself.

Four’s CompanyCatherine Cook isn’t the only Conservatory diva taking the stage at San Francisco Opera this season. Lise Lindstrom (M.M., voice, ’96) made a dramatic house debut in October as Senta in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, stepping into the role with three weeks’ notice. Tenor A.J. Glueckert (M.M., voice, ’10) appeared as the Steersman in the same production. Glueckert created two roles earlier this year in the world premieres of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene and Dolores Claiborne. Baritone Efraín Solís (M.M., voice, ’13) will soon step into the footlights as well. He joins Glueckert next year as a member of San Francisco Opera Center’s prestigious Adler Fellow training program. Solís and Glueckert studied with César Ulloa.

Conservatory of music

Focus. Transformation. education for life.

Oral History ProjectAs the Conservatory approaches its Centennial, the school’s Archives look back to the institution’s roots. But far more than a pile of musty scores and brittle scrapbooks, the Archives bring the past to life with the Oral History Project, a growing constellation of stories told by faculty, alumni and even former presidents. These interviews explore the school’s growth, paint vivid pictures of its personalities and provide a trove of institutional knowledge. Excerpts are available on our website at www.sfcm.edu/archives.aspx.

Archivist Tessa Updike recently spoke with faculty member and renowned cellist Bonnie Hampton. Hampton began teaching at the Conservatory in the early 1950s when she was just sixteen years old. She shared these memories:

On the Conservatory’s original Sacramento Street location “It had a very homey feeling, a very comfortable feeling. Everybody was working, and enthusiastic, and friendly.”

On her first studio (in a basement closet under a stairwell) “If you put your chairs at just the right angle you could just get two people and two cellos in there.”

We invite you to read and listen to our interviews on the Oral History Project website. New interviews will be shared as they are completed. Enjoy!
