That’s where theThelonious Monk Institute of Jazz andUnited Nations Educational, Scientificand Cultural Organization (UNESCO)are holding the second annualInternational Jazz Day celebration, featur-ing an all-star lineup of musicians per-forming at Hagia Irene, a religious spacedating to the 4th century.

Josh Jackson visited Johannesburg lastyear, and WBGO Staff Producer SimonRentner recently attended the 2013 CapeTown International Jazz Festival. Theymet a lot of local musicians—saxophonistMcCoy Mrubata, trumpeter Feya Faku,pianist Andile Yenana, and bassist/instru-ment maker Carlo Mombelli in Joburg, aswell as trumpeter Marcus Wyatt and gui-tarist Reza Khota in Cape Town. DavidCopland, author of In Township Tonight!,will provide some context. South Africanradio host Etienne Shardlow will add hisperspective.

On display in the WBGO Gallery through June 30, 2013 isbone artist Tia Jannah’s exhibit Rhythm inspired byHurricane Katrina of August 2005, and the storm’s pro-

found and soul-wrenching impact on New Orleans and her people.Many died—some physically, others emotionally. The Rhythm seriesrepresents the hope of new life to those who were affected. Jannah’swork also represents the establishment of mankind and theEgyptian culture.

Jannah describes her creative process which led to this exhibit,“As I work with bones, I am exploring the idea that there is a peri-od between death and rebirth. Not only do my bones have new life,I have the sense of new life—of creating new life. Like the discovery of a Divine gift, I

experience joy, energy, and self accomplish-ment. I try to convey all of this in my work.”

“I begin each piece by trying to visualizethe mental enigma of an object or symboland the strong meaning behind it. I thenfind the bones that fit the puzzle best. Thecolors I choose to use most often arebronze and copper. I feel that these colorsgive my work a rich, strong earthy qualitywhile preserving a sense of ‘age’ in honor ofa life lived. I know a piece is done, when itis at a state of being ‘alive’.”
