Casey Bearden

As I was scrolling through one of my social media outlets the other day, I ran across a piece of writing that really stirred my heart. Although it was short, the words within spoke volumes. I found myself agreeing with parts of it, while being convicted by other parts. Some statements expressed had me emphatically saying, "yes, finally somebody said it.", while other statements had me thinking, "That's pretty intense...maybe a little edgy." It wasn't anything that hasn't been thought about before or possibly even said, and it wasn't anything theologically faith-changing. It was, however, something to consider. Some will agree and some will take offense. That's just the way things seem to work these days. Regardless, there is a message to take away and perspective to gain. Some might think that since they might identify with the statements, that its aimed at them, which is not the case, but rather some words of wisdom that a Christian needs to hear every now and then. I know I did.

"Isn't it strange how twenty dollars seems like such a large amount when you put it in the offering plate, but not when you go shopping... Isn't it strange how two hours seems so long in a church service, but so short when you're watching a movie... Isn't it strange that you have trouble finding words to say when you pray, but you have no trouble coming up with something to talk about with a friend... Isn't it strange how difficult it is to read one chapter of the Bible yet so easy to read a popular novel... Isn't it strange how everyone wants the best seats at a concert or sporting event, but always want to sit in the last row at church services... Isn't it strange how we need to know about a church event 2-3 weeks in advance, but have no problem adjusting our schedule for last minute plans with friends... Isn't it strange how we find it difficult to learn a fact about God and share it with others, but have no trouble repeating the latest gossip... Isn't it strange how we believe everything that comes across our media outlets, yet we question everything about the Bible?"

It is strange isn't it? No... honestly, it's troubling. Many Christians, including myself, find that we identify with some of these statements, yet for some, it won't have any impact. Church, what we don't want to happen is to ignore these types of issues, regardless of how small they may seem, and allow our lives, minds, and perspective to be drawn away from our God. What we don't want to happen is to be standing in front of our God, and the statement be made, "Isn't it strange... I thought I had your name in here, but I can't seem to find it." As callous, harsh, and outlandish as that may seem, it's not out of the realm of possibility if we let the little things in our faith and walk with God slip out of our focus. May we all gain a little better perspective of our faith and the little things that make it what it is. Blessings! ~CB

Next Workshop is December 9th
