UP GP’s:59 years of ‘oso’-meness

UP GP’s:59 YEARS OF ‘OSO’-MENESS

the staffMESSAGE FROMTHE PRESIDENT

Heinrich Christian GasacaoPresident, ‘ 13- ‘ 14

Whether you came to feel happier, or to impart happiness to others, might be evaluated on a case-to-case basis. What's sure, is that a place with UP GPs members in it, will surely be a place worth going to. The acoustic jam sessions, random merienda invita-tions, running sessions, Ultimate Frisbee bonding activities and the good old-fashioned siesta-tambay are only bonus advantages of being in the tambayan. The people who make it up, their company, and the good times spent together are the things that matter most.

Since 1955, the UP Gears and Pinions upholds its values of camaraderie. Something that is brought about naturally. Seeing the tambayan from afar, hearing your orgmates shout and laugh 'til their lungs give out, are some of the things that would make you want to say Aylabdyipis!

Greetings!

We are now in the golden age of UP Gears and Pinions where batches almost eight years apart know each other and communication is still intact! Weekend night outs, outings, sport leagues, and of course the classic “tambay sa tambayan”, are avenues where residents and alumni of the organization can interact and share different stories with one another; may it be about academics, extra-curricular activities, or even love life. This is the bond that holds UP GP’s together and is perhaps one of the best things that separates the organization apart from other mediocre groups of students.

I can proudly say that this has been a great year for the organization. The Machine Design Series, a series of events to promote the Mechanical Engineering field is now being anticipated by several participants, both high school and college, around Metro Manila. The Rev UP: Diliman Motorshow on its 19th year is bigger than ever. With at least 60 entries joining annually, it has now dominated other car shows in Diliman and is now famed to be the longest running campus motorshow in the country that was incepted back in 1987. Of course, there are other events where the participation of UP GP’s is highly anticipated by the UP community, especially during the Engineering Week where the organization never fails to deliver enjoyment to the spectators.

To all residents and alumni, let us make UP Gears and Pinions the best organization that we can be and at the end of the day we can all proudly say… AYLABDYIPIS!

GP’s APPLICATION: A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER“Bawal ang mahiyain sa tambayan.”

This has been one of the most important principles when applying to be a member of the UP Gears and Pinions as it basically describes the whole organization – brimming with confidence and courage to be immersed into something one is not even familiar of.

UP GP’s opened the application for the first semester with an orientation seminar last July 4 and 5 of 2013. Being known as one of the organizations with a difficult application process did not hinder student to attend the seminar and catch a glimpse of what it is to be UP GP’s. Around 30 ME students attended the seminar, where the membership heads, Paolo Azucena and Andy Ambrosio, introduced them to the organization and the application process. With the additional inspiration from some alumni speakers such as Mr. Renz Formoso, Mr. Gab Mercado, Mr. Ervin Santos, Mr. King Almazan, Mr. Jayreus Jimenez, and Mr. Tim Arce, it was surely a tough choice for them to not continue on the application process. Almost all of the attendees applied and after a month after the process was opened, they were told to get their buddies to guide them through the process.

As all of us know, the process is to test the applicant of their dedication and trust to the organization. This reflects on the applicant’s sigsheets destroyed by member of the organization, unlike the that of tradition of beautifying sigsheets. This tradition of destroying sigsheets changes the convention of beauty into one where the most beat-up sheet is the most beautiful one. However daunting, this part proves to be one of the happiest part, as applicants spend time to bond with their co-appli-cants when fixing their sheets. This bond was later strengthened through their parody of the music video of 3 Idiots’ “Jaane Nahin Denge Tuhje”, which went viral within the organization as they displayed their humor and creativity. The song name eventually became their ultimate binding force and remembrance they were once applicants of the organization.

Lunch time of September 11 was Mightor, where applicants cross-dress and perform on stage. With their costumes and props, they headed to every org tambayan to invite people to watch their performance at the Engineering Theater. The crowd enjoyed their performance of the usual not-so-wholesome gestures on stage and a midget show showcasing their creativity, humor, and synchronization. All in all, the applicants met the ultimate objective of sharing good vibes and joyous entertainment to the crowd.

After deliberation and final interviews, sixteen new members were accepted. The process ended with the final rites held last October 18 and 19 at Cattleya Resort, Antipolo. Together with some members who had not undergone the rites yet, they were welcomed to the organization the traditional GP’s way.

GP’s HOLDS JUMPSTART FOR FRESHIESEach year, a new wave of eager Mechanical Engineering students is welcomed into the university. As a fulfillment of the UP Gears and Pinions' passion towards creating meaningful relationships among dearest freshmen, UP GP’s has organized the annual Freshie Bonding.

The youngest members of our ME family were invited last June 5, 2013 to a day of fun-filled activities to make them feel at home with their bigger brothers and sisters. They were gathered at the lagoon, where very original and unique games such as Pinoy Henyo were conducted. The members also got the time to share their experiences, giving them a hint of what to look forward to in the years to come. All the story-tell-ing and experience-sharing were done over a very hearty and nutritious lunch prepared by the members. The students was also toured to the buildings and UP study areas, so that the freshmen can fulfill their burning desire to study and attend their classes - a noble desire that the UP GP’s is ever supportive of.

The Freshie Bonding was a definite success! The members of the UP GP’s had the privilege of introducing the students to ME life. It was also a very humbling experience for the members, who were able to relate and connect with the kids.

GP’s ROCKS HYSTERIA, BAGS 3RDThe UP Gears and Pinions know how to fuse music and fun. SirJiTonDyipis and Monologue showed how talented the members of the UP GP’s are as they participated in the Acoustic Jameng’g of Hysteria: A New Kind of High as part of the celebration of UP Engineering Society’s 17th Anniversary held last August 2, 2013 at The Skydeck, Barrington Place, Quezon City.

SirJiTonDyipis, who were the first band to perform, electrified the crowd with a mashup of songs of different genres from songs like “Tonight” of FM Static and Lady Antebellum’s hit “Need You Now” to upbeat songs like Far East Movement’s “Like a G6.” The band, comprised of Ken Bryan Fernandez, Paolo Allan Azucena, Dave Jammin Bacad, Erickson Braca-monte, David Jay Ecal and Emmanuel Jaurigue, also showed their creativity by covering some of the songs with their own lyrics and rap adding more fun to the performance. The band truly got the event started and rocking, and gave the audience a fun and unforgettable number of classic GP’s entertainment.

Monologue’s mashup featured famous songs of John Legend, Bruno Mars and Chris Brown. The band wooed the audience with a smooth performance of their mashup which was arranged only a few days before the event. The audience fell in love and felt sexy with the lyrics from the songs “Save Room”, “PDA (We Just Don’t Care)”, “Treasure” and “Fine China.” The suave mashup landed Monologue, comprised of Kreena Constantino, Andrea Marie Ambrosio, Royce Corrige, Paolo Violan, Darryl Occena and Paolo Malong, the third place in the contest making the GP’s crowd proud.

Like in any other event participated by UP GP’s, the members were present to support the participating bands by shouting out cheers and showing unmatched energy and zeal, also adding spice to what was already a great event. After all the shouts, there is but one undeniable fact, UP GP’s will never fail to entertain and make people happy.

ME CAREER TALKMechanical Engineering is a very broad course in engineering as it encompasses several fields like Power Plant, Machine Design, Manufacturing, etc. To guide high school students on different careers they can venture on in ME, the UP GPs conducts an annual career talk, where speakers are invited to talk about ME to high school students.

Students from different high schools around Luzon were invited for the career talk. Most of them were also partici-pants of the inter-high school machine design. However, they were encouraged to bring more students to attend the morning talk. There were almost 80-100 attendees, including students and their respective advisers.

Mr. Jonas David, a representative from Petron Corporation, gave a talk about their industry, oil and gas. Afterwards, Mr. Gerald Reforma, Mr. Leonard Reyes, and Ms. Noelizza de Leon, representatives from Fluor Daniel Inc., also introduced their company and their industry. After every speaker, there was an open forum.

Raffle prizes, courtesy of MDC, were also given away for few lucky audiences. All in all, the event was successful as some students gave their insights on what they learned from the talk. Lunch was provided after the program.

SHOOT ME DOWN: INTERFRESHIE CROSSBOWDESIGN CONTEST

In work, there are projects or situations where ME’s will not be working with their co-ME’s but with other engineers of other fields. This is why everyone must be familiar with what each engineer specializes into. To further introduce ME to students of other courses, the UP GP’s conducts the Inter-Freshman Machine Design Contest.

This year, 1st year UP students were invited and asked to design and construct a crossbow from common materials provided that could hit various targets of varying distances and height. They were asked to make

the crossbow and the projectile that they will use as well. After placing booths in different buildings in UP, seven teams participated in this free event. Teams were composed of at most three members. After two hours of construction and testing, their machines were judged for design and aesthetic appeal, and were officially tested. Here are the results:

1st Place: Kristian Audri Gabriel (GE) 2nd Place: HenryKing Sicad (ME), Anthony Senina (IE), Arvin John Tejereso (ME)3rd Place: Ivan Geronimo (ME), Miguel Dario (ME), Aldric Caga (ME)

Winners received trophies and cash prizes as well (P2000, P1500, and P1000, respectively).

The event was a great showcase of the flexibility and creativity of UP freshman students as shown by the machines they constructed. This shows that no matter what field or course you are in, what is important is fulfilling the objective completely in the best way possible.

MACHINE DESIGN SERIES 2013Part of the mission of the UP GPs is to pursue the highest degree of competence in Mechanical Engineering for the advancement and technology, for the benefit of mankind. To help accomplish this mission, a one-day series of events is annually held to introduce ME to high school students from different schools and to first year UP students. This is the Machine Design Series (MDS).

Together with Makati Development Corporation (MDC), MDS was held last September 21 at differ-ent venues. It was composed of three events, namely, a career talk for high school students, the inter-freshman machine design contest, and the inter-high school machine design contest.

GLIDARTS: AN INTER HIGHSCHOOL GLIDERDESIGN CONTESTAs the forefront in promoting Mechanical Engineering as an exciting career path for aspiring high school students, the UP GPs held the Inter-High School Machine Design Contest to test the creative minds and to bring out the potential of high school students when it comes to designing and constructing simple machines. In line with the event’s title Glidarts, students constructed plane and dart hybrids, from simple and common materials provided by the organizers, which when launched, are able to fly and hit the target with accuracy and precision. Twenty six participating teams came from eight Metro Manila high schools (Claret School of QC, UP Integrated School, Ateneo High School, Don Bosco Technical Institute, Marist School, Xavier School, Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and La Salle Greenhills High School) and even two schools from Bulacan (Malolos Marine Fisheries School and Laboratory and Bulihan National High School) – a first for the competition and a testament to the reach and influence of MDS.

After having their lunch from the career talk, high school partici-pants were led by their marshals to ME 3 and ME 4 of the UPME Department for the contest. Each team was composed of three members.

After two and a half hours of construction and testing, teams were called one by one to the testing room where official glider launches were conducted. Scores were based on distance flown by the glider and its accuracy to hit the target.

Bulihan National High School’s “Team Chu” composed of Philip Alegarme, Kent Bernal and Steven Paraiso were crowned 1st place after scoring the highest average points after three rounds. Marist’s “Team EMC2” garnered 2nd place as La Salle Greenhills’ “Team Huayra” gained 3rd place after staving off UPIS’s late challenge in a tiebreak round. Winners receive trophies and cash prizes (P3000, P2000, and P1000, respectively).

The event was a great celebration of the students’ creativity as shown by their ingenious designs and construction. The Mechanical Engineering community will definitely welcome these students’ unwavering passion and dedication to their crafts.

KABAYENG’GKabayEng’g is simply an adaptation of the popular offshoot of basketball, Horse. The rules and point system are simple; a player must successfully be able to imitate the shot and/or dunk performed by the preceding player.

Held on the afternoon of December 11 at the ME Department Parking Lot, representatives from 12 organizations battled it out and exhibited their basketball tricks. Some of the tricks performed were windmill dunk, 360 dunk, between-the-legs dunk, off-the-backboard alley-oops, free throw line dunk, and jump shots. Of course, these tricks will not be possible on a real basketball court which led to a smaller basketball and a lower basketball ring.

Third place was won by UP Cursor. UP IE Club won first place by doing a standing one-hand finger roll off the board, leaving SME-UPD, who did not manage to imitate the trick, for second place.

TRIATHLOKOHANEXTREMETriathlokohan is a relay-type race with three parts just like a real triathlon, requiring each competitor to finish in the fastest possible time. However, there’s a catch. The relay is filled with not-so-hid-den innuendos of lengthy fruits and vegetables, such as the bananas and eggplants.

During the event on December 16 in the grass near the Beta Epsilon Way, eggplants swished to roll calamansi fruits towards the finish line and guys were blindfolded while they fed their girl partners bananas dipped in condensed milk. Everything was fun to watch for other organizations as well to the resident members.

The ten organizations that participated battled their way with fun and laughter. However, in the end, only three triumphed. UP Aggre-gates ranked third, while GE Club beat KEM to second place.

SUPER ENG’GBA

Super Eng'gBA is a GP's classic mini-event with a few more twists. Teams competed with each other, dunking, shooting, and perform-ing good team work while dressed up like super heroes wearing nothing but shorts, basketball shoes and super hero capes provid-ed by the organizers. A mini-basketball is used on a half mini-court to make things even more enjoyable and fun to watch.

Ten organizations accepted the challenge and went head-to-head each morning of December 10-12. After three days of basketball, the battle for third place was won by UP 49ers against UP Eng'g Soc. The blue caped UP ACES won the championship as they swept out UP IE Club in a best-of-three game for the championship.

ENGG WEEK 2013: THE GP’s WAYDubbed as the most anticipated week for engineering students, the UP GP’s once again made this year’s medieval period-inspired Engineering Week: Eng’gVictus, one for the books. Through the enjoyable and rather humorous performances of the members, fun, excitement, and happi-ness permeated through the competitive atmoshpere of Eng’g Week 2013.

Being competitive in nature, Eng’g Week features events that pit org against org, in an attempt to win the “Engineering Week Overall Champions (EWOC)” title, awarded to the organization with the most points. Organizations all over the college seek to win this one title. Yet, the UP GP’s take no part in the competition, joining events solely for enjoyment. We often say, “We don’t care if we win. We want to have fun, and we want others to have fun.” True to their word, the members of the organization never fail to entertain, despite having negative EWOC points, which perhaps no one even thought was possible. In the competitive, and ever-so-often conflict-filled Eng’g Week, the UP GP’s is there to lighten things up – to bring entertainment and smiles to the faces of engineering students, and to bring together the entire college.

From December 11 to 19, the UP GP’s organized five mini events, namely, Kabayeng’g, Super Eng’g BA, Triathlokohan, Frisbilao, and Basaeng’g. Aside from organizing events, the organization also actively participated on some night events, i.e. Awitan and Miss Engineering.

An intense game between the UP ACES and UP ENGG SOC.

BASAENG’GWhat is bouncy and a nice thing to look at? Yes, it is exactly what you’re thinking – a ball. Does it have anything to do with this article? No. But what’s really a nice thing to look at are girls competing with utter fervor during Engineering Week, and not the part where they get wet and their shirts sticking to their bodies. That’s what BasaEng’g is all about. It’s the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie that brings a team on its way to winning.

BasaEng’g is a game, with one team composed of 1 male and 4 females, wherein the team’s goal is to collect the most volume of water by shoot-ing water using a “tabo” towards the cups attached to the heads of the female members. The male throws water towards his team from a certain distance in the field much like basketball however, shooting water instead of a ball. Perhaps this is why most of the spectators were men because of the sheer allure of basketball with water.

Every Engineering Week, there are different versions of BasaEng’g, which is why BasaEng’g is one of the events that provide the most entertain-ment to the people of Engineering. The most interesting part is not when you hear girls squealing in delight when their face gets sprinkled by water. It is when they formulate strategies and apply their ES 12 and 15 skills when shooting water to glasses. But after all the wet plays, UP CIEM got the third place, UP CURSOR grabbed the second place, and UP 49ers won first place. The other teams may have not won, but surely, they earned much of the crowd’s claps and attention.

GP’s CONQUERS AWITAN 2K13One of Engineering Week’s most famous night events, Awitan 2k13 was surely not one to pass up for the UP GP’s. Presented by the UP Chemical Engineering Society (UP KEM), Awitan is a prestigious Christmas chorale competition open to all amateur choral groups of the different student organizations in UP Diliman. It was held last December 13 at the Marian Auditorium inside Miriam College.

Awitan is generally a set of vocal performances by different organizations in the college. Two songs were chosen, with one being Christmas-themed and the other one is in line with this year’s theme, 90’s boy bands and girl bands. There is usually nothing too eye-pleasing, and there is nothing too exciting and explosive. That is, until the UP GPs came along. With the mere mention of the UP GPs name as to call the performers to the stage, the crowd’s eyes opened wide and cheers could be heard outside the soundproofed auditorium. After all, the UP GPs has a reputation for entertaining performances.

A minute after the performance timer started, a voice echoed in the crowd saying, “Magandang gabi. Ang susunod na pagtatanghal ay Rated GPs”, indicating the start of the performance. The cheers grew even louder. The UP GPs, who sang their rendition of “Wannabe” by Spice Girls and “Macho Na Si Santa” by Masculados, brought an end to the traditional “vocals-only” performance by bringing in props, costumes, and acting in the videoke-style perfor-mance. Imitations of typical videoke scenes were re-enacted, while others simply displayed their wackiness on stage, as select-ed vocalists sang their song. Even the singers put twist on the song as they display changes in tempo and volume in their perfor-mance. They may have been disqualified for all of the technicalities but their performance will always be remembered. All in all, it was an exciting presentation and, definitely, one for the books.

Videos of the presentation are available on YouTube, entitled “Awitan 2013: UP GPs” and “UP Gears and Pinions (GP’s) AWITAN 2013”.

CLASSIC GP’s PLAYS ON GREEK NIGHTSmoker Night, Engineering Week's traditional org-bashing-centered kickstarter was, unfortunately, removed from the event lineup for this Engineering Week due to conflicting interests of organizations. Replacing it, however, was an event of similar intention - Greek Night.

Presented by the Tau Lambda Alpha Sorority, though not part of Eng’g Week but rather part of TLA Week: Luminescence, Greek Night is highly similar to its predecessor; having the same goals and similar flow. Perhaps the Engineering community simply could not let go of the tradition of Smoker Night, or they simply wanted to see various organizations perform.

Of course, the UP Gears and Pinions was among the 7 organizations that chose to perform in the jam-packed UP Film Institute last December 9. Famous for its witty, humorous or "benta" and often not-so-whole-some performances, audiences were hyped to finally see the GPs back in action. The crowd grew wild by the simple mention of GPs' name.

Presenting a Space Impact-themed performance, the performance featured a backdrop made to resemble the Nokia 3310, where the game originally debuted. With a slightly dimmed stage and a black cloth cover-ing the background, the ever-present black men, stageassistants clad entirely in black, as if they really

weren't present, are and always will be the key performers in the show. The presen-tation was packed featuring a phallus-shaped spaceship re-enacting the gameplay of the original Space Impact and levels resembling the different constituents of the University. In much anticipation, the crowd loved it, to say the least, and the perform-ers surely enjoyed it as well.

A video of the performance was uploaded to YouTube, under the title "UP Gears and Pinions (GP's) GREEK NIGHT 2013".

FRISBILAOOUTRAGEOUSUltimate Frisbee is becoming one of the popular sports being played in the university. The UP GP’s, however, put a twist into it and called the game, Frisbilao. The objective of the game is to knock down objects with discs that become smaller and smaller as they advance in the game. However, as the name suggests, bilaos are used but should be thrown like true Frisbees. The team that knocks the most objects wins the game.

Fourteen organizations tested their Ultimate skills on the afternoon of December 12 at the grass area near Beta Epsilon Way. What made this year’s Frisbilao outrageous were the challenges to the players in the final round. This round required the players to lie on their backs, throw the disc between their legs and even spin five times before throwing the disc. These challenges added to the fun and joy of the members of UP GP’s but added much difficulty to the players.

At the end of the day, UP ALCHEMES ranked third, UP CURSOR placed second, and UP ACES bagged the first place.

GP’s AT TABL 2K13Basketball will always be part of any conversation in a male dominated population. But as what many people say, “You have to walk the talk”. This is what UP GP’s did as they joined Tau Alpha Basketball League 2k13 as part of the Eng’g Week 2013.

This year, UP GP’s was bracketed with UP Eng’s Soc, UP Circuit, UP KEM, and UP GEOP. The first game was up against UP GEOP with an easy win, 68-41, due to good defense and hot 3-pt shooting by the team. However, for the next games, which were against UP Circuit and UP Engg Soc, the team felt short in the dying seconds and lost by only two points for each game. The last game was up against UP KEM where UP GP’s ran the opponent and won the must-win game, with enough margin of lead in order to advance to the quarterfinals. However, in this stage of the tournament, the literally big team, IE Club, proved to be an enormous obstacle for the team. Even with the strategy of taking outside since they are big and despite the hot shooting from the outside range of the team, the team still lost by five points.

Even though the team lost, it is not the award that they look forward to. They look into just playing basketball and enjoying the game while making people realize the true spirit of basketball and friendship on and off court.

GP’s in ACTION: BEHIND THE SCENES OF THECOLLEGE OF ENGINEERING LANTERNColorful trinkets, scintillating decors, and ostentatious ornaments are the basic elements of the pompous floats featured during the much awaited Lantern Parade of the University although the celebration held last December 18, 2013 was different of some sort. It was enveloped with an air of solemnity for the survivors of the typhoon Yolanda rather than the usual festive atmosphere of the parade. With the theme, “Maalab na Serbisyo Publiko ng Mapagkalin-gang Kampus”, each college was challenged to incorporate relief goods being at least thirty percent of their lantern’s composition.

MISS GP’s BLOSSOMS FORMISS ENG’G 2013: BELLUM FLOREM“Ang pagibig ay parang kandila, pag iniwan mo ako, susunugin ko bahay mo.”

These were the words uttered by Miss GP’s 2013, in the person of Mr. Erickson Braca-monte, which rocked the University Theater last December 19, as part of his introduc-tion for Miss Engineering 2013: Bellum Florem.

Finding a candidate for Miss Eng’g is usually a very difficult task for the organization. It is the most challenging role to be put in any UP GPs gentleman to strip off all of his machismo and become a lady in the eyes of the entire college for weeks. The organiza-tion was lucky this year because we had a guy who has such wonderful, carefree, and humorous personality, coaxing every other guy in the room and jokingly saying that they are the ones fit for a cross-dressing pageant. It turned out that such display of quick wit and all-around fun demeanor made him the perfect choice to represent the organization’s fun-loving attitude towards any competition.

Erickson went through a lot of hardship through all the preparations, even facing one of his greatest fears of having his body hair waxed all for love for GP’s. In return, the entire organization was there to support him, cheering for him all throughout. As any other guy in his position would realize, it is very difficult to be a woman as he had to learn from the ladies of GPs that there is a proper way to walk, in heels, and there is such a thing as proper posture. There is also the pressure of always presenting yourself in the best manner wearing the right clothes and the right makeup that complement the feminine features.

On the pageant night, Erickson performed a dance number in a bathing suit, with a magic show which, filled the room with an air of laughter. After all the categories, namely, flower, swimwear, talent portion, and long gown, he was not part of the Top 5. However, he won an award called, “The Wilting Flower”, for having the worst transfor-mation in physical appearance. At the end of it all, the competition brought the whole GP’s family closer together as the men gained more respect for women, forging a great-er bond among members but more importantly, everyone had fun and enjoyed every step in the transformation of Erickson.

Quoting Erickson after the pageant, “It was a cool learning experience. I enjoyed it. I wouldn’t have made it if not for the overflowing support of UP Gears and Pinions.”

GP’s in ACTION: BEHIND THE SCENES OF THECOLLEGE OF ENGINEERING LANTERN

GP’s CHRISTMAS PARTY

With the task at hand, Anjelynn Mae Guanlao and Rachelle Anne Austero, both alumni of the organzation, of the faculty, spearheaded the construction of the college’s float. During the first few do-days for its construction, the design was kept a secret but as every piece was completed, the float began to take shape and surprised everyone involved in making of the lantern.

The design concept was simple. The lantern starts off as ruined community that serves as representation of devastating effects brought by the typhoon. As the accompanying video reaches a certain point, the lantern transforms into a reconstructed version of the original state of the community. The relief goods, such as canned goods, was incorporated into the design of the Philippine flag. The entirety of these elements symbolizes the invaluable role of engineers in rebuilding the nation with the knowledge and skill that they possess.

The organization proved itself as an active stakeholder of the college by eagerly participating in the competition of the float. From providing the basic materials to performing the one and only card stunt during the day itself, the members stood by their genuine willingness to help and the result was stunning.

As the float traversed the Academic Oval, the ardor expressed by the audience and the engineering students was priceless. The lantern may not have won but it truly served as an avenue for the organization to spread bliss to the community.

sobriety almost fleeing instantly were made more crazy and entertaining.

After the drunken shitshow and holiday merriment, everyone left wishing everybody a merry little Christmas. Now, everybody can dive into their beds and probably listen to YouTube covers of Christmas songs and sleep endlessly in the awesome Christmas weather.

After a long, tiring, jam-packed Engineering Week, one would just want to throw himself in his bed and sleep to the December weather and probably listen to covers of Christmas songs in YouTube. But hell no! The best way of ending the Eng’g Week is to see how drunk you can get at the Christmas party! Not just the Christmas party. It's at THE Christmas party.

December 20, 2013 at the De Ungria's Residence in Fairview, the UP Gears and Pinions held a Christmas party to celebrate the victories of Eng’g Week. Forget EWOC points, let the IE Club win. But the one thing GP's didn't forget is that the Christmas party is to celebrate Christmas.

Always remembering the lines in that Christmas song "'Tis the season to be jolly, tra la la la la, la la la la." There were overflowing drinks, the soft ones, but to be jollier one needs the hard ones. There were games like the Longest Line, the Boat Race, and other relays which with the

GP’s PARTY ON ME COOKOUT 2014Now that their freshman year in college is coming to an end, they can proudly say that they have had quite a productive first year. Truly, the opportunity given to Drey Capobianco, Ivan Geronimo, and Arvin Tejereso, to head ME Cookout, an annual event organized by the UP Gears and Pinions held during the Mechanical Engineering Days, was not wasted as the night went on with tons of laughter and sheer joy. The Cookout gives students and faculty a break from all the demands that college life has to offer. The event is open to students, alumni, and faculty, of other departments and institutes of the college. The ME Cookout was held last March 5 in the ME Depart-ment, which started at around six in the evening and ended at two in the morning. Within this span of eight hours, more than 150 attendees enjoyed the food prepared by the members of UP GP’s. Dessert from our local ice cream vendor, a rented karaoke set, drinks, and each other’s company are only some of things that made the gathering enjoyable. Among these, the crowd’s favorite was the rented karaoke set and there wasn’t a time that no one was holding the microphone of the karaoke and screaming the lyrics of their favorite song. There were probably already about a hundred or so songs that were lined up within the first hour of the cookout and whenever the chorus of a song starts playing, people would just push and shove each other around while enjoying nearly getting their shirts torn. It was indeed a very proud moment for the three freshmen, not because of the success of the event, but because of experiencing the quality of work that the organization has to offer. About four hours before the cookout, people were already texting them, asking how members could help in the preparation. When told what to do to help, they delivered perfectly. The whole event wouldn’t be possible if not for the people that lent their rice cookers, containers, cars, time, and efforts for the event. Yes, it was tiring but it was really rewarding.

WRECKING CAR: AN INTER-UNIVERSITYMACHINE DESIGN CONTESTYes, they came in like a wrecking ball – or should we say a wrecking car, as participants from other universities drove their way to UP Diliman and participated in the Inter-University Machine Design Contest held last March 1, 2014 at the Geodetic Engineering Theatre and the Mechanical Engineering Department. This event consists of two sub-events: a Career Talk in the morning and the Contest Proper in the afternoon.

“Don’t stop learning.”

These were the words of Mr. Jonathan Montales, one of the speak-ers in the Career Talk. The Career Talk started as a venue for UP students of Mechanical Engineering to be immersed and be knowl-edgeable in the fields of Mechanical Engineering. This year, the Career Talk has expanded not only for UP students, but to students of other universities and colleges as well. There were three speak-ers who shared their learnings from their very own experiences as Mechanical Engineers: Mr. Jayson Valerio, Mr. Miguel Estepa and Mr. Jonathan Montales, all alumni of the UP Gears and Pinions.

The participants, who include the students and their advisers, listened to the three speakers with interest. A total of 80 partici-pants, coming from 7 schools around the metro also participated in the Machine Design Contest.

The speakers were of top caliber as they talked with spontaneity and a level of coolness that brought an easy atmosphere to the event. The first speaker, Mr. Jayson Valerio graduated from UP on 2001. He was a board topnotcher (placed 8th) in the ME Licensure Exam. He is currently a Reliability Engineer for Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc (PGPC).

The second speaker, Mr. Miguel Estepa graduated in 2010, and is currently working as a Technical Support Specialist at the Energy Development Corporation (EDC). The last speaker was Mr. Jonathan Montales. He was a graduate of batch 1996, a board topnotcher, and now works as a Product Technical Support Specialist for Driveline Fluids covering Asia-Pacific Region.

They shared experiences in their own careers and talked about paths that can be taken after graduating from college. They also talked about how values play an important role in the pursuit for succes. Quoting Mr. Montales, "Set your goal, reward yourself, mind your nutrition and believe in hard work."

The morning ended with a short inspiring message from Sir Joseph Gerard Reyes, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and a GP’s alumnus, which left the students looking at the future brightly. After all the talks, one thing is to bear in mind and that is learning should not stop from the moment you graduate.

(Photo from UP GP’s Page)

Inspired by Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”, this year’s Inter-U Machine Design Contest is entitled "Wrecking Car", where teams from differ-ent schools compete with each other by building their own rubber powered car and topple down targets.

The participating schools include Bulacan State University, Universi-ty of the East, University of Santo Tomas, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technological Institute of the Philippines, Technolog-ical University of the Philippines, Central Colleges of the Philippines, and Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila totaling seventeen teams. Using common household materials and plastic wheels provided by UP GP's, teams must be able to complete their prototype within the construction period of 2 hours. Within the construction period, the teams should test their machine to check if it is operable. The testing area consists of two ramps with rough surfaces and targets made of styrofoam, where they ought to be able to scale the ramp and topple down the most number of targets. After the construction period, the marshals brought the cars to the judges, namely Mr. Ervin Santos, Mr. King Almazan and Mr. Jayvee Layug, all alumni of UP Gears and Pinions.

The first place was bagged by Team LAB Problems from Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The second place and third place were won by two teams from University of the East namely MErador and MEndirigma. All winning teams were able to topple over four out of six targets winning themselves a trophy and cash prize. Each team received a certificate for their participation in the event and for the efforts they have put into their machines.

The event was not about comparing what a team of Mechanical Engineering students’ work to others. It was about showcasing their knowledge, resourcefulness, creativity and teamwork. Their constructions and designs were surely evidences that no matter where their school is, they share the same goal for the challenges they face: to enjoy and to apply what they have learned in the classroom.

RevUP!: 19TH DILIMANMOTORSHOWLast March 8, 2014, the UP Gears and Pinions once again proved why Rev UP is considered the best campus carshow. The 19th Diliman Motorshow hosted a total of 85 registered cars and dozens of car babes. This year’s car attractions include the Best of Show Porsche 550 Spyder owned by UP Alumni Mr. Javier, People’s Choice Award winner Volkswagen Kombi owned by Mr. Dexter Daquigan, and Jeep Wrangler Outlander from the Mototesto 4x4 group. Also joining the show is resident member Jyj Macaspac ‘s Toyota MR-S and alumnus Chinno Garcia’s Mini Cooper.

The show featured a wide range of vehicles from vintage models, to contemporary sedans, to the latest sports cars and SUVs. Various car clubs and car groups graced the event, with the list including the recently-founded and growing group of Mitsubishi hatchback lovers –Mirage Pilipinas (MPH); off-road 4x4 adventurers – Mototesto; and carshow veterans – Autobot’s Autoworks. There were also guest appearances by Internet action star Ramon Bautista, celebrity model Yuka Kuroyanagi, and VIP Pipo Alcantara – bringing with him his five exotic cars which instantly became fan favorites upon arrival.

Preparations for the show started at 5:00 pm of Friday March 7, 2014. A short downpour caused a bit of a delay but eventually, everything was back on track. The entire setup was smooth thanks to the sleepless and bathless members who helped out during the overnight shift.

By 8am of March 8, cars and sponsors started to arrive. Things started to get busy as the Carshow Heads guided the registration team in verify-ing slot numbers while the Marketing Team entertained sponsor requests. Everyone had their fair share of work with parking boys ushering registrants and resident expert photographers of the organization taking photos of cars and babes. Amidst all the work, everyone had the traditional GP’s spirit of doing what they can for the organization with utmost effort and enjoyment.

In the afternoon, the Philippine RC Drifters had their Remote Controlled Car Drifting showcase and competition. Come night-time, there were a number of band performances courtesy of the UP Music Circle and alumnus Jason Rombaoa’s band Game Theory.

From its humble beginnings as a biennial event in 1987, the Diliman Motorshow has since become a yearly tradition and the highlight of the college’s Mechanical Engineering Days. ULTIMATE!

THE SPORTY SIDE OF GP’SA sport is more than just a hobby; it's a way of life.

One of the things that GP’s members enjoy the most is playing sports, all kinds of it. Be it in the dirt or in court, it is just one of the constants of the GP’s way of life. For a Gears and Pinions member, rather than being a physical and mental contest, playing sports primarily promotes closer relationships and builds new experiences. This year, the UP Gears and Pinions has delved deeper into sports, with its members getting more involved in physical activities and the spirit of the members being more fueled than ever.

Recently, members scheduled a Tuesday Ultimate mini-training session, an introduction for those interested in learning and playing the sport and further practice for those already into it. This sparked the Tuesday-Thursday sessions, wherein members of the organization flock the UP Sunken Garden to train and play. Even on other days members are itching to play, stepping outside to throw some discs.

Aside from the general interest in playing Ultimate, several members of the organization have also showed talent in their own respective sports. Currently, the GPs members include a UP Men's Football goalie Micah Jibril Alampay, UP Tennis varsity playe Ray Anthon Marc Guillermo and Engineering Varsity's Men's Basketball Team players Louie James Bautista, Christian Angelo Delariarte and Christian Ryan Salamat among their ranks.

Heat of the sun. Cool winds. Flying discs. Good spirit. You know you are on GPs’ field when you see these four combined and you have to be prepared to be tested physically and emotionally.

Held at Greenfield City, Sta. Rosa, Laguna during weekends of January to March 2014, the UP Gears and Pinions joined the New Year’s League, first in a series of leagues for ultimate lined up for the whole year, organized by the Metro Manila Ultimate Commis-sion. The majority of the members of the team were alumni and resident members of UP GP’s. Some of the members were people from Fluor Daniel and friends. Dubbed as “Team Sese”, members of the team in their orange jerseys were very eager as it was their first time to join an MUC organized league as a team. The team played under the Pool E bracket where most rookie teams start.

The competition was tough since other teams had relatively more experienced players. Nonetheless, the team gave every opponent the games they deserved. All of the ten games were close matches, but the lack of experience of the team proved to be the biggest hurdle they have yet to overcome. Hungry for success, Team Sese vows to gain more victories in the upcoming summer league.

Roster: Carlo Parel, Heinrich Gasacao, Dennis Dabbay, Kevin Bancud, King Almazan, Jayreus Jimenez, Madz Gamboa, Conrad Dumayag, Jerick Bonita, Ely Cabarles, Jay Aquino, Francis Tanala, Maynard Lapena, Darwin Datuin, Janno Umali, Jayvee Layug, Renz Formoso, Enrico Mostoles, Annie Legaspi, Anjelynn Guanlao, Anjenine Guanlao, Millie Reyes, Lou Aguion, Frances Fleta, Janina Argete, Stacy Dumo, Noelizza de Leon, Bea Almeida

GP’s SLUG IT OUT AT UPBL

Team Sese at UP Basketball League with smiles on their faces

As a form of bonding among members and alumni, weekend basketball practices and games are scheduled to promote physical fitness and solidify the bond among them. These weekend practices were put into test as UP GP’s joined UP Basketball League, an invitational basketball tournament for alumni and students of UP.

The team, known as “Team Sese”, is composed mainly of UP GP’s alumni and resident members. There were 7 teams under their division: Team Sese, Narra Gurlz, Villarica Pawn-stars – APB, CFA-100, Playmates, Claretian, and Molave.

The first game was against Molave. This was their first game as a team so they were a bit nervous and were trailing behind for the first part of the game, but they adjusted and ran their opponent as their strategy, winning with a score of 69-54. The next game was against Narra Gurlz, who’s not a new team. Despite having the chemistry and due to hot shooting, they kept up with their opponent but lost motivation on the last quarter, losing with a margin of 20 points. The third game was against CFA-100, which is again a close game but lost in the end with a score of 67-64.

From then on, the team decided to make new plays since they have to win the next games to advance to the playoffs. The next games were against the Playmates, Villarica Pawnstars, and Claretians, which were blowout wins for the team, mainly because of their adjustments, winning with double-digit margins.

Because of this, the team moved on to the quarter finals where they went up against Molave. This game was a close one until the dying seconds but a game-winning floater by Gelo Delariarte made the team advance to the semifinals, where they went up against Villarica Pawn-stars. The game was very physical and very close as well, until the dying seconds. A missed game-tying shot eliminated the hopes of the team making it to the finals.

In spite of not making it to the finals, it was still a worthwhile experience as the team displays their big hearts and determination to win every game.
