President’s Message
4 May 2014
Greetings all,
It was a pleasure for my wife Donna and me to attend the 40th anniversary ban-
quet and celebration night for the Regina Ostomy Chapter on May 2nd. About
80 people were in attendance and there was a great meal, some lively entertain-
ment, some great displays, a silent auction, some great memories shared by one
of the founding couples, and some great stories shared by emcee Susan Hunter
who won the ET of the year award in 2003. Donna won one of the silent auction
items and we will be enjoying some clean filtered water for years to come! I was
also informed that the Regina Ostomy Chapter is holding a Stoma Stroll this
year on October 4. The chapter members will be walking in Wascana Park.
What a wonderful venue!
Donna and I also attended the Saskatoon Ostomy Association annual fund-
raising brunch on May 3rd. About 40 people were in attendance, but they were
big spenders! A great buffet meal was enjoyed by all. There was an abundance
of silent raffle items for people to participate in and again, Donna was lucky to
win not one, but two raffle items – both were one night accommodations at a
local hotel. Thanks Saskatoon Ostomy Association for raising much needed
funds to support UOAC Ostomy Youth Camp!
Saskatoon chapter is also holding their 40th anniversary this year with the main
event – a river cruise up and down the South Saskatchewan River – on June 2,
2014. Congratulations Saskatoon!
Lakeside Medical Centre Pharmacy is having their 40th anniversary this year and
is holding their 8th annual Ostomy Education Day on May 10. I am not able to
attend. Instead, Roger Ivol, our Chapter Outreach Support Services (COSS)
leader, will attend and bring greetings from UOAC. If you are in the area, please
come out and attend.
Hamilton and District Ostomy Association is holding an Ostomy Appliance Fair
on May 20th. Carole Pew, our UOAC office coordinator, will represent UOAC
at the booth at the fair. Anyone in the area is welcome to attend.
Your UOAC board of directors met online on April 12, 2014. A great many
items were discussed. Major items approved include:

the balanced budget for the upcoming year
printing of the new services brochure
revised by-laws
a policy to only issue tax receipts for donations in amounts of $25 or more.
UOAC has designed a new services brochure. Thanks to Ann Ivol, Andy Manson and Lisa Gausman for the
great new look. The brochure is available now and is free of charge to all chapters that would like one (or
more). Please contact the UOAC office to order yours today!
Our April UOAConnection included the financial statement of UOAC for the months ending March 31, 2014.
However, I neglected to include an explanation. The following letter was sent to chapter presidents:
Dear Chapter President;
Attached you will find the financial statements of United Ostomy Association of Canada Inc. for the twelve
months ending at March 31 2014. These are subject to review and modification by Grant Thornton, our outside
auditors; however the board of directors feels it is important to report to our membership our financial health in
a timely fashion. Our intention is to publish quarterly in the Connection newsletter comparing the current year
to the previous year so you can see the progress we are making in achieving our financial objectives.
The Statement of Operations summarizes the revenue and expenses during the period being reported and result-
ing surplus or deficit. The Statement of Financial Position summarizes the assets and liabilities and net worth of
the Association. Notes will add information that we feel is important to disclose.
Please review and if you have any questions or suggestions for changes, please contact our Treasurer, Stephen
Maybee at [email protected] .
Mark your calendars now – the 2nd Annual Canada Ostomy Day will be held the first Saturday in Octo-
ber, 2014. We extend an invitation to all chapters across Canada to join in the Stoma Stroll Awareness
Walk. We created a twelve page procedure manual and have sent it to all chapter presidents. UOAC will set
up the walk webpage for your city, provide you with posters, postcards and pledge sheets, provide you with a
certificate of insurance, pay for approved expenses such as permits and first aid staff.
As well, we have continued with the Virtual Walk. What do I mean by a virtual walk? Well, if your chapter is
not hosting a Stoma Stroll, or if you are too far away to attend, you can still do a walk in your own commu-
nity. Simply go to the website: www.stomastroll.ca and look on the right-hand side and then click on Virtual
Walk. Then click on the link that says Register Now. You can ask your friends and family to support you
through email or social media, or there is a pledge form on the website that you can print out and distribute to
all your sponsors. What a great way to raise awareness and much needed funds to support the great things that
UOAC is planning in the next few years.
The board of directors will continue to hold monthly online meetings (usually a Saturday at 8:00 a.m. CST).
Any chapter president that is interested in sitting in as an observer is welcome. Please send an email to the of-
fice or to myself to get an invitation. Our next online meeting is Saturday, June 21, 2014
The Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act provides federal not-for-profit corporations with a new set of
rules that are modern, flexible and better suited to the needs of today's not-for-profit sector. A special board
meeting was held with chapter representatives on March 8, 2014. The Bylaws Committee prepared revised
Bylaws based on the feedback received. This version was presented to the Board at the April 12, 2014 board
meeting, and the board accepted the revised bilingual version. The accepted version is being circulated to the

Chapter Presidents for final comment and review. After all members have had a chance to comment, the By
laws Committee will draft the Special Resolution for Application for Continuance, which will include Sched-
ule A (Articles) and Schedule B (Bylaws). This Special Resolution will be included in the delegate's package
for the AGM.
I’ve sent a letter to all Ontario chapter presidents announcing the formation of an ad hoc committee between
members of the United Ostomy Association of Canada and Ostomy Toronto to advocate for an increase in the
Assistive Devices Program (ADP) Grant. However, the governing Liberal Party has called an election, so
we will put our efforts on hold pending the outcome of the election.
A great many chapters are doing fund-raising to support sending youth to UOAC Ostomy Youth Camp.
Ostomy Toronto members Jim Fitzgerald and Jason Boyd are embarking on a journey called “GI J's - No Guts
No Glory 2 guys 2 ostomies 130 km race” by paddling a canoe for 130 km. UOAC has been involved in their
fund-raising activities and have set up a fund-raising webpage at:
http://ostomycanada.akaraisin.com/nogutsnoglory. They have set an ambitious goal of $25,000 and are al-
ready 9% of the way there! You can purchase bracelets on the website to show your support. Good Luck
Jim and Jason!
Thank you to the chapters that nominated people to run for the board of directors and for the executive. Suffi-
cient applications were received to fill all positions with two people vying for the one director position, and
this will require the holding of an election.
Thank you to the chapters that nominated people for the ET of the Year Award and the Maple Leaf Award.
Two people were nominated for each award, and their names and nomination forms will be sent to the judging
panels for final decisions.
Our upcoming biennial conference will be in St. John’s Newfoundland in 2014. Dates are July 31 to August
2. Our conference administrator is Delilah Guy, conference chair is Carol Wells. The St. John’s and Gander
chapters are working together to put on a great conference. We hope to see you all there and take some time to
tour around the “Rock” and enjoy the unique experience that is Newfoundland. Conference and hotel registra-
tion forms are already on our website, along with links to websites that show some of the other things you can
go see when you visit Newfoundland. The link is:
http://ostomycanada.ca/events/biennial_conference_of_uoac
Again this year we will be asking for donations from individuals and chapters for raffle and auction items.
And we are asking chapters for advertisements or well wishes for the program book. Janet Paquet has agreed
to do the program book this year. The theme this year is “Ostomates Connect on the Rock”. Hope to see you
there!

Johnson Geo Centre
The Johnson Geo Centre is a geological interpretation centre located on Signal Hill in St.
John's, Newfoundland. Most of the centre is located underground, in an excavated glacial
formation that shows the exposed bedrock of the hill. The museum is named for philan-
thropist Paul Johnson and opened in 2002.
The building is designed to take advantage of the geological features of Signal Hill where
most of the structure is below ground exposing natural rock formations. The area was
originally a peat filled area that was stripped of overburden and a glass-encased structure
of 2.5 stories was built atop the excavation. The building was built through the Johnson
Family Foundation at a cost of $12 million. The building utilizes a heating and cooling
system via six geothermal wells drilled to a depth of 500 feet.
The Basilica Cathedral of St John the Baptist Built between 1839–1855, the basilica is located on the highest ridge overlooking the city of
St. John's. The church is not oriented on the liturgically correct east-west axis, but faces toward
the narrows that form the entrance to St. John's harbour.
The Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is built in the form of a Latin cross and in the
Lombard Romanesque style of a Roman basilica. It was designed for Bishop Michael Anthony
Fleming by the German architect Ole Joergen Schmidt, though Fleming also seems to have had
plans prepared by the distinguished Irish architect John Philpot Jones of Clonmel, County Tip-
perary, Ireland, and also consulted with James Murphy, a native of Dublin, Ireland on the final
plans for the cathedral. Construction was initially supervised by the Waterford contractor Mi-
chael McGrath, but later superintended by stonemason and sculptor James Purcell of Cork,
Ireland, who also designed and built a small wooden church, Christchurch, for the community
of Quidi Vidi near St. John's, Newfoundland.
Construction took place under the watchful eye of the Irish-born Bishop Michael Anthony
Fleming, the Vicar-Apostolic and first Bishop of Newfoundland and later under the eye of his
successor, Bishop John Mullock. The Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is unusual
among North America's 19th century public buildings in that it was constructed using lime-
stone and granite imported from Galway and Dublin, Ireland, as well as 400,000 bricks from
Hamburg, as well as local sandstone quarried from St. John's and Kelly's Island in Conception
Bay, giving the Cathedral its characteristic grey colour. During its centenary celebration in
1955, Pope Pius XII raised the cathedral to the rank of minor Basilica

Chapter Information on the Website
Did you know that our website www.ostomycanada.ca had over a half million hits last year? A lot of the visi-
tors visited the website to look for a support group in their area. Therefore, it is important that this information
be kept up to date! Make sure when sending the information in to the UOAC office that the chapters’ contact
information is current - phone number, email contact, newsletter availability, website, annual dues, meeting
dates and times. Visit our chapters page on our website at http://www.ostomycanada.ca/chapters and let the
UOAC office know via email if any of the information needs to be updated. We’ve had at least one chapter
past president contact the office to tell us that the website still included their phone number instead of the cur-
rent president. Please check your chapter’s listing to make sure the updates have been done correctly!

FROM THE EDITOR
MAY 2014
Fifteen years ago, after my ileostomy surgery, I wrote a newspaper column about admitting that you are hav-
ing problems and quickly seeing a medical person.
It was great advice. So good, in fact, that someone called me a year later and told me I had saved his life by
urging this advice. He had seen his doctor soon after seeing blood in the stool and, after having cancerous pol-
yps removed from the colon with no further repercussions, was told by his doctor that if he hadn’t come to see
him so soon, who knows where he might have been.
Great advice? One must listen, eh?
In late April, I had some chest pains that lasted a few minutes and then went away. A couple of days later, the
pains re-occurred. Same response from yours truly. Pain went away after a short rest and back to normal activ-
ity. Happened again a day or so later.
Finally, after about 10 days, and three episodes within 18 hours, the last very concerning, I decided it was
time to go to emergency.
My wife said I was STOOPID for waiting through 10 days of danger warnings. The nurse who took my vitals
actually raised his voice to me and (rightfully) called me DUMB for waiting so long. The doctor echoed that.
So did other health people I saw in the next 12 hours.
I had what was called a “microscopic” heart attack which later showed no heart damage although I had a stent
inserted to clear an arterial blockage. The attending cardiologist said “maybe” the attack wouldn’t have hap-
pened if I’d come in five days earlier but couldn’t confirm that.
HOWEVER, I was stupid, dumb and whatever other words Roget could use to describe my lack of attention
to a major problem. After about five days, I even goggled “heart attack symptoms” – as if I didn’t know after
seven decades on earth - and still ignored what I read.
I’ll reiterate what I told my readers 15 years ago….if you anticipate a problem, don’t ignore it. See a health
professional who can give you good advice.
DO NOT SELF DIAGNOSE.
DO NOT IGNORE WHAT COULD BE SERIOUS.
LISTEN TO ME. I WAS LUCKY --- THIS TIME.

By-laws Update The Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act provides federal not-for-
profit corporations with a new set of rules that are modern, flexible
and better suited to the needs of today's not-for-profit sector. Our by-
laws committee is preparing a Special Resolution on Continuance
for approval of new articles and bylaws at the AGM in St. John’s in
2014.
When approved, this will allow Ostomy Canada to continue to func-
tion in much the same way as UOAC does now, subject to the new
Act.
If rejected, however, UOAC will lose its certification on October 17,
2014. To put it bluntly, voting NO means that you want UOAC to
shut down, close its doors and be out of business.
The proposed Bylaws, which have been reviewed by our legal advi-
sor, had been sent to each chapter president. On March 8, all inter-
ested parties attended an on-line conference to discuss the feedback
from the chapters. The minutes of that meeting have been circulated
to all chapters.
The Bylaws Committee reviewed the feedback of that on-line meet-
ing and drafted revised bylaws and they were accepted by the Board
at the April 12 online board meeting. The accepted revision of the
Bylaws are being circulated to all Chapter Presidents in advance of
the AGM package. The Board will then prepare the Special Resolu-
tion on Continuance and the required translations for distribution to
all Member Chapters with the AGM 2014 package. The 2014 Con-
ference Coordinator will include an information session to review the
Special Resolution before the vote at the AGM.

Jokes for Today
A Catholic Shampoo
While shopping in a food store, two nuns happened to pass by the beer,
wine, and liquor section. One asked the other if she would like a beer.
The second nun answered that, indeed, it would be very nice to have one,
but that she would feel uncomfortable about purchasing it.
The first nun replied that she would handle that without a problem. She
picked up a six -pack and took it to the cashier.
The cashier has a surprised look, so the nun said, `This is for washing our
hair.`
Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter and put a
package of pretzel sticks in the bag with the beer. ``The curlers are on me.``

The 14th UOAC biennial conference will be held in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Our provincial capital, St John’s offers warm friendly faces. For more than 500 years, St. John’s has been visited by explorers and adventurers and still we continue to keep our ‘small town’ quality of living that predominately makes St. John’s a pleasure to visit.
Considered the oldest city in North America, its history and heritage was influenced by unique culture and tradition. Unique attractions in St. John’s and surrounding areas include: Cape Spear - the most easterly point of land in North America and the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Rooms - immense with culture, history, heritage and artistic expressions. It unites the provincial archives, art gallery and museums. Signal Hill - the first transatlantic wireless message was received by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901. George Street - voted Canada’s best entertainment district. The famous downtown strip has the most pubs and bars per capita of any street in North America. The East Coast Trail - a hiker’s dream with its spectacular cliffs, sea stacks and rock formations.
Downtown Water Street - famous for shopping and restaurants, just a short distance from the Delta St. John’s Hotel.
A highlight of the conference is the focus on the Innovation of Ostomy Products. There are sessions by ConvaTec, Coloplast and Hollister as well as three dinner nights with entertainment. Based on ostomates needs and requests we are offering excellent education sessions. Everyone always enjoys the Raffle and Auction. The Exhibitors will display different ostomy products, accessories and other supplies. Some topics to be presented are: Intimacy, Ostomy Reimbursement, Skin Care, How Chemo & Radiation Care relates to Ostomy, Diabetes and Ostomy, Diagnostic Procedures, and Water: Are we drinking enough?
On behalf of the UOAC and the Conference Planning Team, we all hope that you will join us at this exciting conference and see our beautiful city and we will welcome you all with open arms.
Sincerely, Carol Wells – Conference Chair 2014
