Page 42, Southern Exposure TAILS, FEATHERS & SCALES ’Tis the season for family, food and festivities! But it is also a time for caution. With all the holiday decorations and food there are plenty of hazards for our four-legged family members. During this time of year from now until after New Year’s Day we, as veterinarians, start to see many emergencies related to ingestion of table foods and holiday decorations. It is important to make sure that our pets stick to their regular diets as too often when they are given or have access to table foods they become very ill. I often hear the remarks that they were only given a pinch of something. This is usually enough to start a very serious episode of digestive upset which can lead to medical treatment and often hospitalization. Not something we want to have to deal with during the holiday! As pet owners we like to include our pets in the holiday feast, but all too often it leads to disaster. Another hazard is the holiday decorations. It is important that all electric cords and decorations be kept at a safe distance from our pets. Injury from shock or ingestion of ornaments and decorations can be devastating. Cats particularly like the string-like decorations such as tinsel and garland. This can cause serious digestive obstruction often requiring surgery. Glass ornaments are also a hazard. Don’t forget, season decorative plants can be dangerous and pets love to chew on these. Poinsettias and lily are the most common offenders.
