P7: Test a configured computer system for functionality

Looking to the work I have completed for the tasks P5 and P6, I had installed the following software: Norton, Microsoft office, and Skype. I had also installed the software for the TP-Link wireless NIC, this is shown in the P6 task, in this task I had tested the software rigorously, and the pictures can be found in the document.

Testing softwareBelow is a summarised test plan for the TP-Link, Wireless NIC software.

When testing Norton, I have made sure it is able to detect and remove malware. As well as being able to check registry errors. I also checked its abilities to create custom schedules/scans.Norton security itself cannot check for registry errors, you must use the affiliate program, Norton utilities. I have added the picture below when testing the registry checking function.


The quick scan was effective in removing malware, as shown by the tracking cookies that have been removed. The scan was fast and it was not resource demanding. The scan was finished within 5 minutes.


Using Norton Utilities, I have been able to scan the registry, this scan found two errors, and with the system being in a ‘messy’ state (i.e. not defragmented) the scan was completed in less than a minute, this adds to the functionality of the PC as it is a low-resource, highly effective tool for scanning and mending the computer registry.


This picture shows the ability to create custom scans, yet to schedule scans, you must go into settings.

It is here that the scans are organised. The automatic tasks tab (not highlighted) customises the scan and the scheduling tab organises when the scan will commence. The addition of an automatic feature improves functionality as the scan is automatic, it is not commenced unless the computer is almost in an idle state. This thereofore improves functionality.


I had to test Microsoft office, for functionality, and so I made sure that all of the applications were installed and opened (no picture shown). I then made some routine tests in the test plan.

TEST 1: font size is also available next to the drop down list.

TEST 2: Different file extensions available, including pdf, pictures.


TEST 3: I tested the load times.

TEST 5: In Excel, the formula bar is shown, as well as the formula searching box, and even a categorised version of the formulas. With PowerPoint there are several slideshow buttons as shown above.


TEST 6: there is a word art section, yet it is very basic and so is disappointing.

Unfortunately I cannot take a picture of the quality of a call, nor the load times. But I can assure you that these were recorded and wrote down accurately in the test plan.

Desktop shortcuts/ Folder accessI have tested several shortcuts, to ensure that they go to the right place I had to not only check application shortcuts, but also check folder shortcuts on the desktop page. Although I cannot show you the process, I can show you before and after photos.


As you can see from the testing folder screen, I have also went to the extent to check the file management systems. I have ensured that the preview pane is open. Although I cannot show it, I


have ensured that the layout includes the menu pane, as well as the details, preview and navigation panes. I also made sure that the folder was being shared with no one.

The shortcuts that are shown on the taskbar allow ergonomic access. So using the magnifying tool, I have ensured that it is docked mode to make it accessible to both the able and the slighted in terms of eyesight. The use of having the magnifier docked at the top of the screen means that the entirety of the screen is still visible when comparing it to the other alternatives and so would improve the efficiency of the employee.

Device DriversTo test whether all of the device drivers were installed correctly, I had to look at whether there were any unwanted icons that would represent any problems (although I did not find any on the system, I have placed an image found on google to showcase errors).


After checking to make sure all software has no errors, I looked further into the installed hardware and software. So to do this I clicked the properties button after right-clicking on the corresponding driver. After already establishing that they were all installed correctly, I checked to look for any updates.

Below I have shown a single example as to how I have checked the device driver and made sure it is updated. I did this thorough check to the monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, optical drive, NIC, HDD, and RAM as well as the printer. I have shown the way of checking drivers through the device manage.


For some aspects of the PC, you cannot check the driver. An example of this is the RAM, so for this I when into the system properties and made sure all of the RAM was recognised by the system. For other areas such as the printer, you go into the control panel, then check the version number of the


specified object by highlighting it and pressing properties. Of course in many cases, a printer (for example), may not show up when plugged in or is on the network, so you use the ‘add a device/printer’ function.

When using a wireless device (USB devices are automatically detected by windows), you use this function and then windows scans for the devices in the area.

Printer Paper SetupSetting up the printer paper size needs to be done in two different ways. First of all it needs to be setup from the printer itself, then it also needs to be setup in the applications (so this would be the individual open office applications).

So, after clicking on control panel, click ‘view devices and printers’

Then find the printer that you want.

Then find the preferences settings page (it will differ from each printer)

After finding this, check the settings to make sure that they are set to A4.


ADD IN A PART ABOUT CHANGING THE PRINTER PAPER SIZE IN OPEN OFFICE

Correct Date and Time Settings.To check the date and time settings, press this button (as shown below, it is found in the bottom right-hand corner).

After checking the date and time, you may find it to be incorrect. If this is the case, then press the change date and time settings, then the ‘change date and time box’. Edit the time to be correct from here.
