Unleash the power of the iPad in HPE
Unleash the
power of the
iPad in HPE
*iPad
*iPads can transform the way we teach whilst changing the
ways students learn in and out of the classroom. Fear of
failure is a cultural issue that needs to change for both
teachers and students. Incorporating new initiatives should
be embraced, not discouraged.
*
*
*The most ideal apps to use in the classroom are those that are not
subject-specific. These apps allow students to be creative and have
ownership over their work. Their product can be used to benefit of
others, such as their classmates or the community.
*Over the years, through my teaching, I have observed activities
which are structured that allow students to be passive receivers of
learning.
*Using iPads can provide endless possibilities and learning activities
*iPad apps should focus on creation, not just consumption.
*Learning is to be targeted towards each individual student’s needs, not your favourite teaching style
*iPad apps offer
wonderful, rich and up-
to-date Professional
Development in a wide
range areas of education
and, of course,
specifically in HPE.
*You need to consider why you are using the
iPad in your learning environment.
*Don’t just hand out an iPad with an app and
expect a learning experience will take place.
*Consider how the apps can be used, shared and
targeted to encourage student interaction to
pursue an interest in content.
*Consider how the work can be downloaded and
marked.
*
*The way learning is taking place - students in your
classroom will be in control of what they learn.
*Hybrid or blended learning (combination of online
learning and face to face teaching) is almost the norm
in many countries at secondary and tertiary levels.
*Keep asking yourself: are the learning experiences
purposeful, meaningful and ‘real’ for your students?
*
*
*
*App smashing needs to follow a few basic
steps:
1. Create content with one app
2. Create content with another app
3. Merge the content together
*To make app smashing work you need to use
apps where you can export the work to the
camera roll (or to a cloud based storage
service) and then pull them out again to merge
them.
*Note: use apps with zero pre-populated
content. Allow students to create the entire
project.
