LARGE, ROBUST MOTORS FOR HEAVY DUTYAND EXTREME APPLICATIONS.

STANDARD FEATURES

• Conduit box is large size and built of cast iron or fabricated steel. IEC®* frame medium voltage motors feature termination connections on standoff insulators (optional on NEMA®* frame motors).

• End turn bracing yields long life and is designed to minimize the effects of coil fatigue from frequent starts, yet it allows for thermal expansion under full load temperatures.

• Corrosion protection against the effects of hostile atmospheres eases hardware removal for regular maintenance inspections. All large motor rotors are epoxy-coated for added protection against chemical attack. The motor nameplate is stainless steel.

• Anti-friction bearings are normally used in applications where high radial or axial thrust loading is common. The bearing chamber and lubrication system are designed with an ample grease supply, safely extending maintenance intervals. Sleeve bearing is optional on IEC frames.

The Marathon® Endurance SeriesTM motors are the right choice for applications demanding ruggedness and high reliability.Users recognize the value of Marathon® motors and their ability to support a multitude of applications with high efficiency and longer performance. Every Marathon Endurance SeriesTM Motor is backed by more than 100 years of manufacturing experience, plus state-of-the-art engineering and production, along with comprehensive service, starting in the earliest planning stages of your motor.

BUILD UP OPTIONS / MODIFICATIONS DESCRIPTIONSALTITUDE / AMBIENTThe rating of standard motors assumes operation at sea level. Listed motors are suitable for operation at altitudes up to 3,300 feet in a maximum ambient temperature of 40°C within Class B rise limits when operated at rated horsepower. The ambient temperature is the temperature of the cooling medium surrounding the motor. All standard motors are suitable for operatation over the range of -15°C to 40°C ambient per NEMA®* MG-1.

The cooling effect of ventilating air is a function of its density. The air at higher altitudes is rarer and cannot remove as much motor heat, causing the motor to run hotter. When running a motor above 3,300 feet, the following alternatives are available to keep a standard rated motor within safe operating temperature limits:

A. Operating a standard sea level rated motor at less than rated load above 3,300 feet will reduce any heat problem. For example, a motor with a 1.15 service factor can be operated at altitudes up to 9,000 feet, with a 1.0 service factor.

B. If the motor is operated in a lower ambient temperature, it need not be modified for high altitude operation. For example, in a maximum ambient temperature of 30°C, a standard sea level rated motor can operate up to 6,000 feet. At 20°C maximum ambient temperature, a standard sea level rated motor can operate up to 9,900 feet.

Motors applied per A and B above do not require any additional charge for altitude and will not bear any special altitude or temperature data on the nameplate. The alternate to the above suggestion is to design a motor specially for the application, with appropriate data stamped on the nameplate.

ALTITUDE / AMBIENT – Frame size and performance may change with an altitude/ambient modification.

ALTITUDE RERATE – Special motor designed with appropriate data stamped on the nameplate. Frame size and performance may range with an altitude modification for motors rotating at 3,301 to 9,900 feet retaining a 40°C maximum ambient and with no change in service factor.

HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RERATE – Ambient temperature is defined as that temperature which the motor will see in the surrounding air as an expected maximum. The standard ambient is 40°C. Standard motors are designed so the temperature rise produced within the motor, added to the standard 40°C ambient temperature, will not exceed the safe winding insulation temperature limit of the motor's insulation system when in operation at maximum load conditions. Frame size, insulation class, bearings and grease may change with an ambient modification for motors operating outside the ambient envelope of the motor outside the ambient envelope of the motor.

LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RERATE – For low ambient temperatures below -15°C , frame size, bearings and grease may change with an ambient modification for motors operating outside the ambient envelope of the motor.

BALANCE / VIBRATIONAll Marathon® AC motors are dynamically balanced to achieve vibration levels below NEMA Standards. The amplitude of vibration is measured in accordance with NEMA Standard MG-1 Part 7. The standard balance is 0.15 inches/second peak for 2- through 6-pole and 0.12 inches/second peak for 8-Pole and slower motors. When ordering, specify the level of balance, precision or special.

PRECISION BALANCE – Precision AC motor balancing is 0.05 inches/second per NEMA Standard MG-1 Part 7. Vibration is measured on all three axes using five separate locations. Motors with roller bearings are not available with vibration limits at the precision levels.

SPECIAL BALANCE – Special balance is 0.08 inches/second peak for 2- through 6-Pole motors and 0.06 inches/second peak for 8-Pole and slower motors. Special balance is standard on inverter duty, automotive and severe duty motors. Additionally, special balance is not available on 2-Pole (3600 RPM). Special balance levels are not available on motors with roller or sleeve bearings.

BEARINGSAll standard motors use anti-friction deep groove Conrad type ball bearings, sized for the loads to be expected in industrial applications. These are of the AFBMA type BC with C-3 fit. Roller bearings are used on the drive end to handle heavy or overhung (radial) shaft loads.

CONVERT BALL TO ROLLER BEARING (DRIVE END) - Roller bearings are used where high radial loads are present for an improved L10 life in belted applications. This modification requires that the belting requirements are provided prior to order acceptance. Available on 1800 RPM and slower motors. Roller bearings are available as open type only (no shields or seals). They are not available on flange mounts where no radial load is applied and are not available for direct coupled applications.

FLOOD LUBRICATION SYSTEM - Flood lubrication is used where it is not possible to use an oil ring, or in applications, where additional bearing cooling is required.

INSULATED BEARING - Insulated bearings are used to prevent the transmission of shaft currents which can cause electrical arcing (bearing fluting) and premature bearing failure. Insulated bearings provide a thin, non-conductive aluminum oxide coating on the machined outer race of the bearings. This thin coating electrically insulates against bearing currents, however, it does not act as a "thermal insulator". In most applications, the opposite drive end bearing is insulated to break the electrical path of the circuit. If insulated bearings are required on both ends, double the adder. If roller bearings are required, the opposite shaft end will always be insulated.

OIL SITE GAUGE - A brass fluid gauge with a sight glass acts as a fluid level indicator and provides a means to view the level of oil in the bearing housing.

OIL SUMP HEATER - Oil sump heaters are required in sleeve bearing motors in ambient temperature from -40°C to -10°C. These heaters are thermally self-limited by watt density and thermal capacity of the oil reservoir. Heaters are ony available in 115V, 60 Hz. This modification includes heaters for drive and opposite-drive end sleeve bearings.

BUILD UP OPTIONS / MODIFICATIONS DESCRIPTIONSSLEEVE - Sleeve bearings are use for both ODP & TEFC applications. They are supplied with oil reservoirs, ring oilers, sight gauge, marked magnetic centers, and oil fill and an oil drain. Motors with sleeve bearings are not suitable for belted applications. The temperature range of sleeve bearings are limited to ambient temperature extremes of -10C to 40°C. For ambient temperatures below -10°C, an oil sump heater is required.

BLOWERSLow rotational speeds, common in many variable speed applications, cause additional heat within the motor. The use of an auxiliary blower may be required at these lower rotational speeds to mitigate damage due to the additional heat generated. The National Electrical Code 430-126(b) mandates that motors with external force-ventilation have a form of thermal protection. This protection is included when modifying the motor for forced ventilation

RADIAL BLOWER - A radial blower, in which air is forced ventilated from the top (or side) into a chamber on the non-drive end of the motor and air is forced over the frame. Blower voltages are single or three phase. Specify voltage and phase when ordering.

BRACKETS / FLANGES - Standard drive end bracket can be replaced with either a C-Face or D-Flange mounting.

C-FACE - A C-Face bracket consists of a male rabbet and tapped holes for mounting bolts typically used for direct mounting of pumps.

D-FLANGE - D-Flange bracket consists of a male rabbet, with holes in the flange for thru-bolts. This flange is typically used on direct mounting of gear drives.

CONDUIT / TERMINAL BOXStandard conduit/terminal box construction is based on the individual product description. A fabricated steel box is standard on larger frames. Conduit boxes meet or exceed 430.12 requirements for volume. Termination of protective or monitoring devices are provided in a separate auxiliary conduit box.

CABLE GLAND - Modification provides metal industrial grade cable glands for outlet opening on conduit/terminal box. The customer needs to provide the cable size and type, cable gland manufacturer with type and model number when ordering so the proper cable gland can be selected.

CONDENSATION HOLE/BREATHER - Addition of a condensation hole and breather to the conduit/terminal box to release moisture.

NEMA II TERMINAL BOX/STANDOFF BUS INSULATORS - NEMA®* Type II terminal box with bus bar termination on standoff insulators.

OVERSIZED CONDUIT/TERMINAL BOX - Add oversized fabricated conduit/terminal box in place of standard box with larger NEMA minimum volume.

SPACE HEATER IN CONDUIT / TERMINAL BOX - Addition of 115 VAC single phase space heater with leads brought out to auxiliary terminal box.

COUPLINGSCustomer supplied rigid, flexible, pinion couplings and V-Belt sheaves can be pressed on and dynamically balanced. Couplings, pinions or sheaves must be finish-bored and key seated to Marathon® motor shaft dimensions and must be shipped to plant freight prepaid. Lead-time is a combination of the delivery time of the component and time to perform the modification.

MOUNTING OF CUSTOMER SUPPLIED COUPLINGS - Customer's one-piece coupling half can be mounted on the shaft. The coupling half must be pre-balanced, finished machined and key seated and sent transportation prepaid to the factory. Motor vibration characteristics will be measured after coupling installation, however, the motor will not be rebalanced after coupling assembly.

DRAINS & BREATHERSStandard duty motors include a weep hole and closable plugs as standard. These are located in the drive end bracket or frame, at the lowest point. The drain hole plugs are open on delivery and users must ensure that the drain holes face downward when mounting the motor.

304 STAINLESS STEEL DRAIN & BREATHER - Combination self-draining and breather plugs are available on TEFC motors. Maximum enclosure rating is IP56 with breather.

ENCODERSThese electrical devices sense rotor speed and direction providing feedback to a control device. An encoder is a feedback device that translates mechanical motion into an electrical signal. A cable is connected from the encoder to the variable frequency drive to provide this feedback. Various mechanical provisions on the motor are required to attach the encoder. These may include C-Face on the non-drive end of the motor and special shaft extension. Various resolutions are available. All encoders offered have quadrature signal with line driver output.

DYNAPAR®* ENCODER - The Danaher®* HS35 encoder is provided as standard. Specify the type of termination (10 pin MS connector, industrial connector or M12 euro-style) required at time of order.

FAN / FAN COVERMotors incorporate an aluminum fan as standard.

LOW NOISE FAN COVER - Sound reducing foam-lined noise cancelling fan cover in lieu of traditional fan cover.

STEEL FAN - A steel fan in place of the standard aluminum fan.

GREASE / LUBRICATION / FITTINGSStandard grease is Exxon Polyrex®* EM with a bearing operating temperature range of -30°C to +150°C for ball bearings.

HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE - Bearing grease may be changed to allow for a higher operating range. The motor bearings and end bells are purged and repacked with Dow Corning®* DC44M grease or equivalent with a temperature range of -40°C to +204°C.

LOW TEMPERATURE GREASE - Bearing grease may be changed to allow for a lower operation range. The motor bearings and end bells are purged and repacked with Beacon 325®* grease or equivalent with a temperature range of -60°C to +120°C.

OIL MIST SYSTEM - The modification includes provisions to accommodate oil mist lubrication system. Motors will be modified to accept an external oil mist lubrication system. The bearing cavity is arranged for oil mist, but the bearings will be packed with grease for normal operation. Prior to the oil mist lubrication system being connected, the bearings and bearing cavities need to be purged and cleaned so grease/oil is compatible and does not affect performance and reduce bearing life. The oil mist lubrication system is supplied by others and consists of a centralized system where compressed gas is used to atomize oil. The oil is then conveyed by air in a low pressure distribution system to fittings on the motor that meter the oil to the bearing housings.

GROUNDINGAll motors have grounding provisions per NEMA®* and NEC Standards.

ON-FRAME GROUNDING - Addition of drilled and tapped hole on conduit box side of frame with installation of bronze grounding lug. These provisions are typically a drilled and tapped hole either 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 and can be located on a frame foot or on flange of a vertical motor.

SHAFT GROUNDING RING - Shaft grounding rings are recommended (NEMA MG131.4.4.3) as an effective means of bearing protection for motors operated from inverter power. One ring is adequate to bleed down inverter-sourced shaft voltages, thereby protecting both bearings for motors.

HARDWAREStandard hardware is non-corrosive, zinc-plated grade 5.

304 STAINLESS STEEL HARDWARE - 304 stainless steel fasteners for holding brackets, conduit box, fan cover, nameplates and T-Drain are available on all frame sizes. It does not include grease fittings, eyebolts or any other components.
