MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLORUNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Have you ever wondered how useful it would be

to sample life at university before you make your

final decision on what and where to study?

The Taster Course Programme is designed to give you such

an opportunity by enabling you to sample, within a university

environment, the subjects you may be interested in studying

further. The Taster Course Programme is administered by

the University of London with 14 of its Colleges participating.

These comprise Birkbeck, Central School of Speech &

Drama, Courtauld Institute of Art, Goldsmiths, Heythrop

College, King’s College London, LSE, Queen Mary, Royal

Holloway, Royal Veterinary College, St George’s, UCL and

the University of London Institute in Paris.

The Programme also welcomes a further ten universities.

These are BPP University College, Brunel University, City

University London, University of East London, University of

Greenwich, Imperial College London, London Metropolitan

University, London South Bank University, University of West

London and the University of Westminster.

Courses are also provided by The Careers Group, University

of London.

This unique collaboration of universities has successfully

enabled us to offer students, looking towards starting

university in September 2013 (Year 12), an opportunity to

choose from more than 125 courses ranging from Medicine

to Drama, History to Chemistry. The taster courses run from

half-a-day to one week and are available between February

and August 2012. All courses are non-residential and

provided free of charge.

I hope that both teachers and careers advisers will find the

Taster Course Programme a useful addition to the Year

12 university and course selection process and, thereby,

encourage students to participate. Judging by the feedback

we have received from previous participants, I am convinced

that the experience of attending a course within the Taster

Course Programme ensures that students are better able

to make informed choices about their future in higher

education.

The information in this brochure is further supported by

updates on our website www.london.ac.uk/tasters

Wishing you all the best for the future.

CENTRAL SCHOOL OF SPEECH & DRAMA UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

The Central School of Speech & Drama was

founded in 1906 by Elsie Fogerty, to offer an

entirely new form of training in speech and

drama for young actors and other students,

at a time when there were very few university

drama courses available. The choice of name

– the Central School – highlighted the School’s

commitment to a broad range of training systems

for vocal and dramatic performance. It espoused

principles that were firmly held yet responsive

to change. That sense of continuing critical

openness to new developments is a lasting

hallmark of the School.

Being the Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre,

Central offers access to a new laboratory for multi-

media performance; a design studio space to facilitate

intradisciplinary collaboration; an object theatre laboratory

in addition to a puppetry/object manipulation studio; music

room facilities to provide advanced sound recording and

editing facilities; and teaching and learning laboratories

commensurate with 21st century lighting, sound and digital

media technologies (including CAD).

COURTAULD INSTITUTE OF ARTUNIVERSITY OF LONDON

The Courtauld Institute of Art is the leading centre

in Britain for the study of the History of Art, and

one of the premier art historical institutes in the

world. Renowned for both teaching and research,

it is a small organisation that places a central

value on open and informal contact between staff

and students. As a College of the University of

London it is also able to draw upon a wide range

of other resources.

Its Bachelor of Arts degree covers the history of Western

art from classical antiquity to the present day. Particular

emphasis is placed upon the close study of original works

of art, but the teaching also engages with the many broader

historical and theoretical issues raised by the subject.

Students are able to choose from a wide variety of courses

in their second and third years, and also to take advantage

of a full programme of lectures and research seminars. The

annual BA intake is approximately 50 students.

Art does not speak for itself, and art historians adopt

diverse methods in their attempts to answer the many

questions that it provokes. In this one-day course, staff

from the Institute will provide lectures and tours illustrating

their own approaches to a variety of European works from

antiquity to the present day. Students will have a chance

for group discussions in the presence of famous paintings

in the Courtauld Gallery and there will be an opportunity

to experience undergraduate-style teaching. The course is

for anyone who wishes to sample the learning of art history

at this level, and especially for those who are thinking of

applying for a BA course in the history of art at the Courtauld

or elsewhere. The course is open to all.

GOLDSMITHSUNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Goldsmiths was originally established to provide

educational opportunities for local people

over 100 years ago. Today we have over 5,000

undergraduates studying subjects covering the

arts, social sciences, humanities and computing.

We’ve been part of the internationally recognised

University of London since 1904.

Based in New Cross, South East London, almost everything

at Goldsmiths is on one site. New Cross is in zone 2 of

the London Transport network. You can get here by train,

London Overground, bus, and Docklands Light Railway

(DLR). Our setting is urban and lively, but not far from the

green parks of Greenwich or the free art at Tate Modern.

With talented, enthusiastic people from different cultures

and backgrounds, the atmosphere at Goldsmiths is diverse

and exciting. There are always a wide range of events taking

place throughout the year – from the excellent events

programme run by our Students’ Union, to annual degree

shows, music concerts, media screenings and theatre

performances.

Many of our former students have become leaders and

innovators in their chosen fields: they include Antony

Gormley, Sam Taylor-Wood, Mary Quant, Linton Kwesi

Johnson, Alex James and Graham Coxon. Six winners of the

prestigious Turner Prize have been Goldsmiths graduates.

One of our strengths lies in our promotion of enterprise

and entrepreneurship – we encourage our students to look

at things in creative ways, and to take a flexible approach

to problem solving. All of our degree programmes aim to

provide you with the skills that are valued by employers,

and you can gain invaluable experience through work

placements and volunteering schemes.

We look forward to seeing you on one of our taster courses,

or on one of our degree programmes!

Subject area: Politics, International Studies/Relations, Social

Sciences

Taster course requirements: Year 12 students, interested in

studying Politics or social sciences generally

How to apply: Online at www.london.ac.uk/tasters

Course code: GS07

Politics is a thought provoking subject that focuses on

people and power: who gets it and how they use it to make

society work. It also examines why political conflict occurs

and how it is resolved. Studying Politics at university

means studying the real world and developing the skills to

make sense of that world. The Department of Politics at

Goldsmiths provides a lively interdisciplinary environment,

specialising in the study of cultures and conflicts in a way

that crosses boundaries between disciplines. For most

of our Politics degrees you develop a broad foundation in

politics in the first year, and then choose optional courses

such as European government, International Relations,

Chinese Politics, Art and Politics, British Politics since 1945,

and many more.

This half day session will be an introduction to the subject.

You will participate in taster lectures and get the chance

to experience half a day on a university campus in central

London. You will also find out about admissions processes

and get to meet current Politics students.

Today’s multicultural, multi-faith society presents challenges

for the religious believer that religions have never had to meet

before. We will consider the resources needed for coping

today. Knowing God - Is God known within the self or known

in the events of revelation? This is an issue common to all

religions and traditions. Remembering God - The heart of the

believer is compared to a mirror, through dhkir one polishes

the mirror of the heart to reflect the Divine light.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most intractable

in the world: it is heavily influenced by religious beliefs

about land and justice and dramatically affects global

relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims. We ask

whether religious faith can also inspire hope and creativity

in situations such as this.

These philosophy taster sessions introduce some of the

big questions of philosophy, taking you close to the cutting

edge of several contemporary debates. Be prepared for

accessible, but challenging and sometimes provocative

talks. To what extent is the world we seem to observe

around us independently there, and to what extent is it mind-

constructed? Do colour, or moral value, or beauty lie merely

in the eye of the beholder? What we can we know about the

world? And what’s so valuable about knowledge, anyway? Is

there good reason to suppose the world is, or, as one of our

speakers will suggest, isn’t created by God?

The day will include an introduction to the study of theology,

and the study of the human person from a theological

point of view. The claim that God can be known at all is a

contentious one to many people in the contemporary world

but it forms an important part of the bedrock of Theology.

Kant’s challenge to theology in the Enlightenment pressed

theologians to address the question of the status of our

knowledge of God. This course will examine the kinds of

knowledge that can be realised by faith and reason, ask about

the point of Theology and explore the link between knowing

God better and knowing ourselves better.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Queen Mary is the third largest of the University of London Colleges, with over 16,000 students who enjoy life at one of London’s friendliest universities. We are based in one of the most lively and multicultural parts of the Capital, between the City and Docklands. We are also central London’s only campus-based university.

Our students are incredibly diverse, from all over the UK and

the world, and are a particularly lively bunch - Queen Mary is

noted for its vibrant social scene. The Student Village provides

over 2000 bedrooms right on campus, only five minutes from

your first lecture of the day! All rooms have wireless Internet

connection and many boast en-suite facilities. Set alongside the

beautiful Regent’s Canal, the Student Village also has a grocery

shop and café bar.

Our students are taught by the leading lights in their academic

fields and they benefit from our innovative flexible modular

degrees, a fact confirmed by the results of the 2011 National

Student Satisfaction Survey, which revealed that our students

are the most satisfied in London (ranked joint 1st in London

among the major universities).

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (the RAE) confirmed

that Queen Mary is a leading research university, ranking us

11th nationally (The Guardian) for the quality of our academics’

research work. This means that our students are taught by

staff who are active in research and doing work of international

importance - meaning that you’ll be taught by people who are

real experts in their field and have written the books you’ll be

reading.

The Students’ Union supports a wide range of clubs and

societies and the brand new sports complex includes a brand

new multi gym (QMotion), sports hall and squash courts. The

Students’ Union also runs two shops, The Drapers’ Bar (which

is also a great nightclub), and several cafes.

University of London in 1969, the Institute was the

first British university in continental Europe.

Studying here will lead to a University of London degree,

an internationally recognized qualification which will stand

you in good stead for your future career. As a student of the

University of London, you will automatically gain access to

central University of London facilities, notably the Senate

House Library and the University of London Union (ULU),

both based in Bloomsbury, London. In 2005, ULIP formed a

partnership with two of the largest colleges of the University

of London, Queen Mary and Royal Holloway. Consortium

membership is developing and enhancing ULIP’s teaching

and research capabilities.

Our distinctive BA in French Studies lasts three years

rather than the usual four, and is taught mostly in French.

Students benefit from small classes in which they develop

their spoken and written French to a high standard. Our

programme is specifically designed with a contemporary

angle. With a high level of competence in French language

and a keen awareness of French intellectual and cultural

life, our graduates are highly sought after by employers.

Situated on the Rive Gauche (Left Bank) of the Seine, the

Institute is within easy reach of all corners of the city. The

Institute’s library, computing facilities, classrooms, student

café, and recreational facilities are all located on site and

you benefit from studying in a supportive and friendly

environment.

participants to France’s ‘Ninth Art’– the comic strip or

bande dessinée (BD). Beginning with a historical overview,

students will discover the origins of this dynamic medium

before charting its twentieth-century evolution from

juvenile pastime to established, adult-oriented art-form.

Focusing on best-sellers from this whistle-stop tour of the

BD, participants will consider not only the artistic merit of

these tomes, but also their validity for study in an academic

context. The link between these works and the evolution of

twentieth-century French and Belgian history will also

be discussed as we consider Tintin au Congo and Astérix le

Gaulois not as children’s stories but valuable socio-historical

documents. Finally, the future of this Francophone art form

will be assessed, with discussion centring on the developing

connections between BD and cinema, as in the recent filmic

adaptations of Persepolis, Adèle Blanc-Sec and, of course,

Most of the courses are incredibly popular, so places go very quickly. It is advisable to book early to avoid

disappointment!

2. Actually read the programme!

Once you have received a copy of the programme for the day, make sure you familiarise yourself with it. Not

only will you be better prepared for the day, but you will also have time to call the London Taster Course

Programme Office beforehand if you have any questions.

3. Put the date in your diary/Blackberry/iPhone etc!

The Taster Courses are a great thing to attend, not least as when you apply to go to university, they’re brilliant

to mention on your personal statement. University admissions tutors want to know that you have done some

research on your chosen degree, and taster courses are a brilliant way of doing this.

Remember, if you have booked a place and find that you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as

possible (email [email protected] or call 02078636046) so that your place can be given to someone

on that ever-growing waiting list.

4. Take a map with you!

Before you set off for the taster course, make sure you know exactly where you are going! The Transport for

London website (www.tfl.gov.uk ) has an excellent journey planner for getting around London and will give you

a guide as to how long your journey will take. Just in case, remember to also take a map with you on the day!

5. Come armed with lots of questions

Check out the university’s website before you go on the taster course so you can get some idea of what that

university is like and the kind of subjects they offer.

Remember that most of the courses will be run by university lecturers and admissions tutors, so it is a great

chance to quiz them on things like; possible careers after graduation, tips on the personal statement and tips

on university interviews.

6. Collect contact details

Universities are only too happy to be contacted to answer any questions you may have - so don’t be afraid to

ask for email addresses/telephone numbers from staff on the day. You never know when you might have a

burning admissions’ question!
