WHAT WE STAND FOR
The mission of the Department of Recreational Sports is to
provide quality programs, services and facilities to a diverse Texas
A&M community. WE ENCOURAGE THE LIFELONG PURSUIT OF
ACTIVE, HEALTHY LIFESTYLES and enhance student development
by providing leadership and employment opportunities.

SPORTS: 14,127 participants

REC ENTRANCE STATISTICS
• Average of 1.2 million entrances each year since opening in 1995
• Average does not include an estimated 300,000 additional annual entrances from groups coming in for special events such as tours, camps, swim meets
• Currently 75% of the Texas A&M student body uses the Rec Center and the services that we provide.
• One day record: 9,192 (August 31, 2009)
• FY14 1-day record: 7,983 (January 22, 2014)

PROVIDING LEADERSHIP AND EMPLOYMENT
OPPORTUNITIES.
STUDENT EMPLOYEES The Department of Recreational Sports employs approximately 850 students annually to operate our programs, facilities and services and paid them a total of $2,323,306 + benefits in FY14.
Rec Sports is the largest employer of students on the Texas A&M campus and, therefore, provides many students with the financial aid to fund their education.
PEAP BUILDING The new Physical Education Activity Program Building for the Department of Health & Kinesiology will serve as an ancillary facility for the Department of Recreational Sports
OPENED IN: FALL 2013
115,000 SQ. FOOT FACILITY WILL PROVIDE REC SPORTS: • Gym Space for 6 Volleyball or 4 Basketball Courts • Gymnastics Room for Gymnastics Sport Club • Mat Room • Sport conditioning space for boot camp • One weight room for the Powerlifting Club • Meeting space for Student organizations
Overall, even with the upcoming Student Recreation Center expansion, we will still loose some activity and meeting room space.
• Providing a much better facility for intramurals and sport clubs
• Drop-in recreation has proved to be extremely successful at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex

EXPANSION
TOP PRIORITIES OF THE REC EXPANSION INCLUDE:
• Weight Room expansion to accommodate larger student body
• Two new gymnasiums to meet the demand of intramural sports, sport clubs and free play
• Additional activity rooms for fitness and rental use
• 8-lane indoor lap pool
PROJECTED TIMELINE:
Approved by Board of Regents: Feb. 2014
Media Day: Mar. 2014
Weight & Fitness Room Closed & Equipment moved to courts 1 & 2:
May 2014
Construction Begins: Apr. 2014
Natatorium Closed: May – Aug. 2014
(Outdoor pool available, but expected to be crowded)
Occupancy: Mar. 2016
