Spring Break Safety
Spring break is upon us, Badgers! We've put together some
guidelines that will apply to you regardless of whether or not
you're traveling, seeing more sun, or staying on campus!
· Create Great Adventures!
· Be open to new experiences.
· Introduce yourself to new people.
· Pause to mindfully reflect on what is being learned.
· Driving Safety
· Take a map or some other reliable method of navigation in case
your phone loses service on your journey.
· Make sure everyone in the car has valid identification and the
vehicle's registration/proof of insurance are in the car before you
leave.
· Alternate drivers, especially on longer trips.
· Flight Safety
· Consider locks or another security method for your
belongings.
· Bring all relevant documents with you, including a passport
(if necessary) and other identification.
· Always inform others of your travel plans.
· Accommodation Safety
· Always write down the address of where you're staying in case
you forget and need help finding your way back.
· If it is available, use a safe in your room to store your
valuable belongings.
· Observe where emergency exits are
Want to read even more travel tips? Check out Safe Spring
Break.
· Sun Exposure is more likely near the equator, at high
altitudes, and during summer months. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following if you're
expecting an increased risk of ultraviolet ray (UV) exposure
this spring break:
· Stay in the shade, especially between 10am and 4pm.
· Wear clothing to protect skin and a hat that covers your face,
neck, and ears.
· Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
· Use sunscreen with proper technique reapply when
necessary.
· Avoid indoor tanning before your trip. It does not help
protect you from harmful rays.
· Find more information about sun exposure and the associated
risks here
· Water Safety is important regardless of the size of the
body of water. Follow these simple tips to be safe:
· Know the local rules regarding safety measures, such as
blue flags for safe water conditions, and red flags for
hostile conditions.
· You may not be able to tell how deep the water is in a natural
body of water. Take precaution when swimming in areas that aren't
marked.
· Swim with others if possible! Especially if there isn't a
lifeguard present, this can really reduce potential risks.
· If you are stuck in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore
until the current ends. Do not swim against the current!
· Travel with others when you are able to and make sure to
take precautionary measures for everyone. Safety is a number one
priority! If you or someone you are with is in danger, seek help as
soon as possible if you are able to. Know the emergency numbers of
the area you are traveling to. These can vary significantly if you
are traveling out of the United States.
· If you are choosing to participate in higher risk activities,
like consuming alcohol, create a plan to stay together and
know where your accommodations are located. Limit your activities
in the sun and bodies of water if high risk activities are
occurring.

Reduce Your Plastic PollutionThis Spring!
By 2050 there will be more
plastic than fish in the ocean.
It is important to take steps to reducing pollution and waste. A
healthy environment is a key component to increasing your own
personal wellness! Take steps this spring to reduce your plastic
pollution and call on others to do the same. Although everyone's
steps may look different based on accessibility and ability, we can
all work together to make, real positive change on the planet! For
more information on this graphic, look to Less Plastic.
Reef Safe Sunscreen: An Essential To Consider This Spring &
Summer
Enjoying the planet's water resources is enjoyable throughout
the year and especially in warmer months. In attempts to keep
ourselves safe from the sun's harmful rays with sunscreen, we can
harm the ecosystem around us. In doing so, we can ultimately hurt
ourselves, water sources, and the planet as a whole. Marine species
are under increasing stress from climate disruption and harmful
chemicals released from sunscreen. Hawaii has already
taken steps to limit the amount of harmful chemicals released into
the beautiful ecosystem by regulating sunscreen brands available
for purchase in the state. Utilizing reef safe sunscreens for all
of your adventures in the spring and summer, if it economically
feasible and available for you, can help to ensure natural
bodies of water are enjoyable for many more generations. Some
brands that Hawaii and marine life approve of include All
Good, Badger, and Raw Elements.
