University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Level One Trauma Center Advanced Trauma Life Support ™ The Advanced Trauma Life Support TM course is an organized approach to evaluation and management of seriously injured patients. The course combines lectures and practical experience to teach participants how to establish priorities and stabilize the critically injured patient. Target Audience This course is designed for primary care physicians, surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, and physician extenders who care for trauma patients within their realm of practice. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners may register as either auditors or students. Mid levels may receive ATLS certification if registering as a student. Course Objectives • Demonstration of concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient assessment • Establish management priorities in a trauma situation • Initiate primary and secondary resuscitation necessary within the first hour of emergency care for acute life-threatening emergencies. • Demonstrate the skills necessary in initial assessment and management of patients with multiple injuries. Course Schedule The provider course is a 2-day course. Day 1, the course begins at 7:00 a.m. and will end approximately 5:00 p.m. Day 2, the course begins at 6:30 a.m. and will end at approximately 5:00 p.m. The course content includes core lectures, case presentations, triage scenarios, hands-on skill stations with the utilization of the Trauma- Man ® Simulator, and testing. Note: The course may be canceled if less than 28 applications have been received two weeks prior to the course or for unforeseen circumstances. If cancellation occurs, you will receive a full refund and your application will be given first priority should you decide to enroll in another course. CME Credits The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medican Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American College of Surgeons designates the initial education activity for a maximum of 19 AMA PRA Category 1 credis. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in that activity. Approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for up to 19 hours of ACEP Category 1 credits for the initial course and 7.5 Category 1 credits for the refresher course.
