• Formal program established in 1992 based in part on the success of a pilot fitness program within the Human Resources department

• Groundwork completed over the first two years represents a good case study for other sites to follow– Define mission– Identify champions– Determine available resources– Create personal touch points– Align with organizational mission

• Consistent mission for the last 15 years:– “Provide health promotion

education and activities to support the goal of improving the overall health of the employee population”

• Behavior change model used to develop initial program mix– Awareness– Targeted intervention– Regular follow – ups– Programs with mass appeal– Emphasis on keeping low risk

Alumni Field HouseFitness to Medical Fitness

• Facility has grown from 5,000 sq ft in 1992 to 50,000 sq ft currently

• Yearly visits by employees, students and retirees have grown from approximately 18,000 to over 100,000 in 2006

• Medical fitness model creates unique atmosphere of blended user mix

• Tobacco Cessation lead by certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Patrice Houston, M.A., LPC,LCDC, CEAP, TTS– Individual based counseling

with nicotine replacement and twelve month support

– Two year experience of nicotine replacement therapy/counseling model has yielded a 30% one year quit rate
