PRESIDENT’S WELCOME2012/2013 has been a busy year for Stirling and the wider student movement. The Union Officers and staff have been hard at work delivering the best we can for Stirling students. This Impact Report provides us with an opportunity to shout about our successes!

During the past year we have been able to secure staggered seminar sign-ups, ensure a 24hr library is in place for next year, install quick access printers in the Library and sign a new kit deal for Sports Union Clubs. Campaigns have been run to promote internationalisation, raise awareness of mental health issues, celebrate the history of liberation movements and find out the issues that matter to students.

On a national level, Stirling students and Officers have protested over education cuts, spoken in Parliament on the Post-16 Bill, been involved in consultations on University Governance and campaigned for equal marriage and votes at 16. Through working with NUS, we have been able to fight the proposed £34.6 million cuts to further education proposed by the Scottish Government.

By working with the University, we have been able to secure student representation on more committees than ever before thus ensuring more decisions engage student input. We have also had great success in securing School Officers across the board and worked to ensure students were consulted on all proposed changes to Learning and Teaching.

Finally I would like to thank the other Officers and Union staff for their hard work over the past year. Their efforts have contributed greatly to the continued success of the Union. I would also like to pay tribute to the Union’s Black Students’ Officer Anton Olaifa who sadly passed away this year. He will be truly missed. It has also been a difficult time with the terrible loss of Stirling student David O’Halloran. The thoughts of all Stirling students, Officers and Union staff are with his family.

I would also like to thank the External Trustees, whose commitment and dedication allows us to do what we do. The Students’ Union exists to ‘Make Students Lives Better’ and they play their part in ensuring we are run by students, for students. Good luck to the new Officer team in the year ahead!

A POWERFUL VOICEFOR STUDENTS Representation, campaigning and winning for students are at the heart of the Students’ Union. This year we have worked tirelessly to support and strengthen local activism with regular campaigns on local and national issues, as well as developing projects and schemes to support developing activists.

PUTTING YOUR VOICE FIRST Looking nationally, we gathered over 140 consultation responses for the Equality Network on proposals to legalise equal marriage in Scotland, lobbying local MP’s and MSP’s around the issue of equality, and supported the ‘Our Future Our Fight Campaign’ in defence of Scotland’s Colleges. For her work in championing liberation across Scotland, our Women’s Officer Lucy Drummond was shortlisted for the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland Inspiring Woman of the Year award.

Locally, we supported students to actively engage the wider community, gathering over 160 responses to Stirling Council’s development plan, connecting the University to the M9 intersection, destroying our local green belt. The Union launched a campaign to secure free and easy access to water for students, collecting over 260 petition signatures for more drinking fountains across campus.

In collaboration with NUS, the Union was able to support five events celebrating our diverse membership and the multitude of worldviews held by students here at Stirling.

GRASSROOTS REPRESENTATION This year has seen significant enhancements within student representation with all seven academic schools now opting in to the School Officer scheme and recruitment of 15 new Officers underway. School officers assist and coordinate course representatives in their division, feed into the School’s Learning and Teaching Strategy and work to ensure student’s voices are heard at all levels of their education. The Union also held its first student assembly this year allowing students to meet University management and discuss learning and teaching matters leading to major reviews of decisions to remove mid-semester break.

HEALTHY BODY, HEALTHY MINDS As part of the Union’s work to improve student health and wellbeing we signed up to the Healthy Body Healthy Mind Awards coordinated by NUS Scotland and Scottish Universities Sport. The project aims to encourage students to participate in regular exercise in order to alleviate and reduce mental health difficulties. As part of this project we held 10 events including hikes up Dumyat, free Stress Packs, and extended our Scottish Mental Health First Aid training to sports teams and University staff.

eLECTIONS AND NOMINATIONS PACK

SUPPORTING OUR MEMBERSThe Union not only fights for student rights we also support our members through difficult and critical times. This year we worked with just under 140 individual students on academic appeals, complaints, fitness to practice cases, discipline, student finance and general welfare issues. Over 30% of our cases were international students, 90% Full Time and 70% Undergraduate. We plan to continue our work in promoting support services and collaborate with the University to ensure no student is ever left without somewhere they can go for help.

LEAD YOUR UNIONThis year we had a renewed focus on our traditional Election with a rebrand of our biggest democratic event to focus on leadership and change, offering candidates more support and one to one advice on campaigns as well as getting as many staff and officers to promote voting and the importance of using your democratic rights. In total we achieved a 24% turnout, 5% higher than last year, and were able to identify voting patterns through our work with Business Systems Development & Support Team (BSDS) at the University.

COMMUNITYCLUBS & SOCIETIESWith over 900 members and 40 different groups, Clubs and Societies truly are the heartbeat of the University of Stirling. From the Rock Society to the Business Club, from Dance@SU to Drama, clubs are an undeniable testament to the diversity and potential of Stirling students.

Clubs are also a fantastic way for students to form life-long friendships and further develop interests and skills, which not only adds to their student experience but may also contribute to their self-development and employability. This year, Clubs and Societies have once again produced a range of achievements. Whilst the Union supports all aspects of club administration and development, the real stars are the hard working Committee members. These fantastic volunteers are the life blood of Clubs and Societies, who ensure their respective clubs continue to strive and provide a positive influence on their members student lives. From Conservation Projects to Shakespeare plays, from International food nights to Political Debates these are the activities that make students’ time at University all the more valuable as well as enjoyable. This hard work was once again recognised at the annual Clubs & Societies Awards Ball in April 2013 when a total of 14 awards were presented.

In 2012/13 the Sports Union has had a hugely successful year, empowering over 1400 students across 46 Sport Clubs to participate, achieve and develop in Sport. The hard work both on and off field was recognised at the Sports Union Awards Ball, which this year sold out in record time. At the event 11 Trophies, 4 Full Blues, 9 Half Blues and 16 Colours Awards were presented to our most outstanding members, who in different ways have contributed to making Sport a tremendous success in 2012/13. Sport at the University of Stirling plays a very important role in promoting and enhancing both physical and mental well-being of students as well as providing a range of social and self-development opportunities. In addition to providing training and support for its 250 volunteers, the Sports Union also offers a range of coaching, umpiring and first aid qualifications to its diverse membership.

During 2012/13 the Sports Union President led from the front in representing students through being:

Elected Chair of SSS (Scottish Student Sport) Presidents’ Forum and Scotland’s representative in the BUCS International Advisory Group (this body makes decisions on delivery and provision of University Sport across the UK);

Selected as the Great Britain representative of the EUSA (European Universities Sport Association) Student Commission and elected as Vice Chair of the group. The Commission looks at promoting sport and physical activity at international level;

Selected to represent Stirling and Great Britain at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia in July 2013.

VOLUNTEERINGSTUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME The Student Leadership Programme is aimed at developing students to become the leaders of today and tomorrow. The programme is offered on 3 levels – Bronze, Silver, and Gold. In 2012/13 over 80 students enrolled on the programme and benefitted from sessions and activities.

The programme looks at the key skills and attributes that make a great leader such as public speaking, time management, conflict resolution and team work. On the programme students participate in interactive sessions and practical activities, whilst being encouraged to take a reflective approach to their learning journey. The Student Leadership Programme is kindly sponsored by Endsleigh.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INTEGRATION PROGRAMMEThe English Language Integration Programme is a pilot programme delivered with funding from the Welcoming International Students Fund from the Scottish Government. The programme consisted of 8 sessions delivered by current Postgraduate TESOL students, to facilitate their integration and acclimatisation to UK teaching styles and communication. The students who delivered the session in turn gained practical first-hand experience in devising and delivering sessions for non-native English speakers. In total 50 students benefitted from the sessions overall.

INVESTORS IN VOLUNTEERS - VOLUNTEER HANDBOOKIn 2012/13 the Union has continued to improve its Volunteering Practice and produced a Volunteering handbook for prospective volunteers. The handbook is aimed at empowering students with all necessary information on volunteering with the Union, from how and when to apply to the training and accreditation they are entitled to. This will hopefully empower students to make informed decisions on how to best use their time to contribute to the Stirling student community whilst enhancing their employability.

YOUR UNIONQUALITY SERVICES FOR STUDENTSFrom the day to day food in Studio to the full Freshers Week lineup, the Robbins Centre plays a key role in Union activity during the year. This got off to a fyling start in the summer of 2012 with the development of a new outdoor decking area for Underground. This builds on the continued affinity students have with the strong Starbucks Coffee brand. Not to be outdone, and in keeping with the Union’s priorities to provide quality brands to its members, Studio introduced a new Stone Willy’s Pizza range in February 2013. Focusing on quality and linked to improved customer service, it has resulted in an increase in Studio footfall.

Quality was also the focus within the bar with prominence given to premium products such as Kopparberg and Rekorderling ciders which proved popular with the student body. The Union was once again awarded Best Bar None status in recognition of its safe, welcoming and engaging environment.

A WEEK LIKE NO OTHERThe start of term saw a packed 10 day schedule featuring acts such as Vernon Kay, Radio 1’s Jameela Jamil, funnyman Josh Widdicombe as well as the annual Freshers Foam Party. A record number of Freshers Passes (including the new Premium F Pass offering access to events throughout the year) were sold in record time, in addition to over 3,600 tickets sold for the week justifying the lighting investment in Envy ahead of the new term. Freshers Week continues to provide the Union with a unique opportunity to engage with the new membership and promote the full range of activities and services on offer. This was supported by the launch of the Union’s new look website which went live for the new term in September and has already resulted in enhanced engagement from students. This will be a key area for future Union development.

WORKING TOGETHER, WORKING FOR YOUThroughout the year, there was a focus on more collaboration with Clubs and Socs and this resulted in regular events with a host of groups. Working with clubs to provide the venue and events they want is a vital function for the Union. This was mirrored during the Halloween event organised with the Accommodation Liasion students which was a resounding success.

STIRLING DIGSThe Union’s online letting service Stirling Digs continues to grow from strength to strength. Offering students the opportuntity to search for safe, affordable housing it promotes good practice from landlords and a way for Stirling students to search for properties in one place. To date 111 landlords are registered on the site. Further details can be viewed on the site at www.stirlingdigs.co.uk

SUSTAINABILITYLOWER CARBON UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY CHALLENGEA year ago, the Union was granted £110,000 by the Scottish Government to help staff and students reduce their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment over the next three years. This has resulted in the recruitment of two full time and two part time positions to carry out the three main projects: Lower Carbon Living; Stirling Student Switch Off and Stirling Uni Reuse Scheme.

GREEN IMPACTFollowing on from last year’s success, we have achieved Gold Status in the NUS Green Impact awards 2012-13. Furthermore, the Union won ‘Green Impact Union of the Year (Small Trading)’ gaining points for the completion of most green actions in the category.

FAIR-TRADE UNIVERSITY STATUSAlongside the above projects, the Union is looking to achieve Fair-trade status in the coming months. This will involve working closely with the University to ensure compliance. Although the Union already stocks some Fair-trade products, there are another couple of steps to confirming the status. To date a Fair-trade Ceilidh has taken place and stalls have been run at the University to raise awareness.

RESIDENCES ENERGY CONSUMPTIONThroughout the year the team have been working to change behaviours and reduce energy consumption in the Halls of Residence. Overall there has been a reduction of 57.8% in comparison to a three year baseline.

FINANCEThis Impact Report is evidence that the Students’ Union has delivered more activities, programmes and campaigns in 2012/13 than ever before. In delivering more, the Union has managed its finances efficiently, operating within the grant envelope and building the commercial areas to ensure a sustainable future. Incoming resources for May 2013 are forecast to come in around £1.325M which is £74K higher than the previous year. This rise in income is mainly due to increased Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) funding and extra sales in the Robbins, particularly in the coffee shop which has increased sales by 33% to prior year.Expenditure for May 2013 is forecast to be £1.313M, 85K higher than in 2011/12. This rise in expenditure is mainly due to the increased CCF funding being undertaken and Robbins increased sales requiring extra staffing and goods bought in for resale. Also within the year there was a tactical investment of £10K to bring the Stone Willy’s brand into Studio.

Net outgoing funds are forecast to come in around £11.5K which is £11K less than prior year making the total funds carried forward (reserves) forecast to be £73K.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

Campaigning, activism and standing up for what you believe in are core principals of my life. The Union works incredibly hard to really impact the lives of students and I have been awed by the effort, determination and dedication of staff, officers and students to improve our University and local community. I believe in our Union and that is why I decided to run in the elections and lead our Students’ Union next year.

However, I think that although we should be extremely proud of our successes to date, we must recognise the lack of engagement and understanding our membership have with the core purpose of our Union.

Students’ Union’s provide a collective voice for students and a passion and energy to create change. All our members have a voice and a vote in how we move forward and democracy is at the core of our decision making process. Part of our task as leaders is not only to set the agenda, but also to rely on students to formulate the outcome with us, as facilitators.

Through our influence, our actions and our collaborations, we can not only affect the lives of each and every student here at Stirling, but should also aim to formulate opinions on a regional and national level.

Over the coming year, with the new executive team and an experienced staff team to assist them, I hope we can really revolutionise the ways in which we consult and run our student democracy.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Sabbaticals, Executive Officers, Trustees and staff for their work and contributions. For those of us who are striving forward into the summer and our colleagues at the University and within the wider movement, I hope you are ready for an exciting and enjoyable year ahead.
