hOw bIG IS STIRlING?

We think it is the perfect size. the population’s around 40,000 – 20 percent of whom are students. this makes Stirling big enough to offer a full ‘city experience’: shopping, café culture, performing arts and nightlife. Yet it’s still compact enough to retain a warm community feel – and make it easy for you to get around and settle in.

whaT IS ThE CITy lIkE?

Stirling combines the charm of an historic destination with the buzz of a contemporary city. there’s truly something for everyone, much of it aimed directly at students.

Stirling is linked to two of Scotland’s historic heroes: William Wallace and robert the Bruce. Along with the dramatic castle, these give it a strong identity.

Stirling’s history blends perfectly with a thriving modern soul. the city lights up at night, and many pubs, clubs and bars gear themselves towards students, with themed nights, DJs and special promotions. traditional pubs provide quieter alternatives, with open fires, real ale and folk music.

closer to campus, Bridge of Allan is a vibrant mix of old and new, with beer gardens and bistros for summer evenings.

culturally, Stirling castle is an established concert and arts venue, hosting acts such as travis, James Blunt and lulu. the tolbooth building is another busy focus for performing arts and other events.

the city is a major tourist destination, served by numerous restaurants, bistros and cafés. there’s everything from pub grub to fine dining, with Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and mexican all well represented. nearby Bridge of Allan offers delis, bakeries and a classic fish ’n’ chip shop.

Stirling city centre is just 2.5km from the campus – less than 10 minutes by bus.

nestling where the Scottish highlands and lowlands meet, Stirling offers you the peace and tranquillity of unspoiled mountains, lochs and shores – perfect for outdoor activities such as walking, canoeing, mountain biking and sailing.

Stirling also has superb links to the rest of Scotland and beyond. in particular, both edinburgh and Glasgow are less than one hour away by road or rail.

If yOU aRE aN UNdERGRadUaTE STUdENT

You may live in residences on campus. these overlook the loch and are just a few minutes’ walk from all main facilities. Alternatively, if you would prefer flat accommodation off campus, this can also be provided. residences have 24-hour staff on hand to ensure a safe and secure environment. in addition, communal self-catering kitchen facilities create a superb social atmosphere.

You will be guaranteed accommodation in your first year, provided an online application is received by 25 August. if you’re coming here from outside the eu, you’ll be guaranteed accommodation each year.

If yOU aRE a POSTGRadUaTE STUdENT

You have the chance to stay in accommodation specifically reserved for postgraduate students. We aim to offer these rooms to everyone who applies.

These are usually shared flats or houses off campus, within easy reach of both the university and city centre.

If yOU aRE a STUdy abROad STUdENT

You are guaranteed university-owned or managed accommodation, either on or off campus. You will normally be offered a room in an apartment sharing with other students.

whaT aRE ThE ROOMS lIkE?

We offer a wide range. Altogether, we provide just under 2,000 places on the main campus, and a further 800 places in shared flats in Stirling and nearby Bridge of Allan.

largely rooms are a single study bedroom with shared kitchen/bathroom facilities. there are also some en suite rooms. nearly all are networked, so you can link your pc to our high-speed network. the majority of the campus is suitable for wheelchairs and some accommodation has specially adapted facilities. please contact residential services as soon as possible to discuss your requirements.

whaT abOUT fOOd?

All our accommodation is self-catering, with shared kitchen facilities. there are several supermarkets near the university, plus a range of independent and speciality food shops.

if you prefer not to cook, there are plenty of on-campus catering outlets offering good value food. We offer student discounts to help your money go that little bit further.

whaT dOES IT COST?

Stirling has a relatively low cost of living, compared to other parts of the uK. here’s a typical budget for an undergraduate student living in a hall of residence:

You will automatically become a member of the Students’ union when you register at university. From then on, what you do is up to you – including helping to run activities if you want.

the union thinks of itself as your ‘second home’. As well as offering its own welfare and information service, the union runs a range of venues together with an entertainment programme catering for all tastes.

most of our undergraduate programmes offer you the opportunity to study abroad as an integrated part of the course of study. normally this takes place in the third year, when you can participate in an exchange with one of our many university partners.

We have erASmuS exchange agreements with universities throughout europe. each year, some 35 Stirling students study in the czech republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, hungary, the netherlands, norway, Spain and Sweden.

We also offer a range of international exchange programmes. All our partner institutions are highly academic, offering a variety of academic subjects, living environments, activities and facilities.

each semester we welcome around 180 visiting students from around the globe. You may apply to attend for either or both of the autumn and spring semesters. You can either apply as part of an exchange programme, or direct.

whaT CaN I STUdy?

hOw aRE dEGREES STRUCTUREd?

undergraduate degrees in Scotland – including at Stirling – typically last four years (eight semesters).

In your first year you have the opportunity to take up to three subjects. You maintain this breadth of study until the end of Semester 3, when you start to specialise in your chosen area. this gives you the chance to try new subjects, and even change the focus of your degree if you want to.

You have maximum flexibility as there are no department or faculty restrictions. You can combine subjects from different areas, for example: Film & media and environmental Science; French and psychology, philosophy, politics and economics (BA).

aRE ThERE OThER ENTRy OPTIONS?

if you achieve particularly high grades, you may be able to go directly into the second year of your programme. the table shows which programmes offer this option. While some students choose this route, others prefer to still experience the breadth of study and flexibility the first year offers.

there are also some programmes that you can start in either September or February – again, please see the table.

hOw MUCh dOES IT COST?

undergraduate tuition fee rates and payments differ, depending on where you live – here is a rough guide. For full information, please get in touch or visit:

scottish/eu domiciled students

You won’t have to pay tuition fees. the Scottish Government pays these on your behalf, through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). You must apply for this funding every year.

uK students (domiciled outside scotland)

You will be required to pay tuition fees at the ‘home’ rate for each year of your programme.

Fees are set by the Scottish Government and are the same at all institutions. the fee level for new students entering in 2010 is £1,820 per year. You can take out an additional student loan to cover tuition fees, then repay this (along with any other student loans), once you have graduated and are earning over £15,000 a year.

International students (domiciled outside the eu)

You will be required to pay tuition fees at the ‘overseas’ rate for each year of your programme.

For students who are not eligible for support from uK public funds, tuition fees vary according to the degree programme being taken. For 2010/2011, the annual tuition fee is £9,900 – £11,950.

whaT fINaNCIal SUPPORT IS avaIlablE?

Financial support is available to some students in the form of student loans and additional maintenance grants.

whaT aRE ThE ENTRy REqUIREMENTS?

please ask about academic requirements, as they vary from one programme to another. For all programmes you need a standard level qualification in English, and in mathematics for certain programmes.

if you’re coming from outside the uK, we accept a range of qualifications – please see the table below for examples.

whaT If ENGlISh ISN’T My NaTIvE laNGUaGE?

You’ll need to demonstrate a level of proficiency. Typically we accept an ieltS score of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in Writing and listening. We also accept a tOeFl score of 80 iBt (or 550 pBt; 213 cBt).

INTERNaTIONal STUdy CENTRE

For international students who need to improve their english or who have to undertake additional academic preparation we offer an Undergraduate Certificate programme. This one-

year foundation runs parallel to your first year of degree study. it combines english language preparation, academic modules and study skills. Once you’ve completed it, you go straight into the second year of your degree. This certificate is run by our international Study centre – see page 21.

hOw dO I aPPly?

full-time programmes starting in september please apply through the universities and colleges Admissions Service (ucAS). log onto www.ucas.com and use the web-based system, ApplY. the initial deadline is 15 January for uK/eu students and 30 June for international students. (please note: we will consider later applications for many subjects.)

whaT aRE ThE ENTRy REqUIREMENTS?

Normally, a good first (Honours) degree is required. For some programmes your first degree must be in a related subject area, however many programmes suit any background. Work experience may be required for some programmes. For detailed advice, visit:

You will need to demonstrate a level of language proficiency. typically we accept an ieltS score of 6.0 – 7.0 (depending on the programme) with no less than 5.0 in each component. We also accept tOeFl score of 80 iBt (or 550 pBt; 213 cBt).

INTERNaTIONal STUdy CENTRE (ISC)

international students who do not have the entrance requirements to enter directly on to a Stirling postgraduate programme can opt to study for the pre-masters programme at the international Study centre on campus. this is a tailor-made two- or three-term programme consisting of academic subjects, study skills and english language training. Once students have successfully completed the course and have met entry standards, they will proceed directly to their preferred master’s programme. contact details for the iSc can be found on page 21.

By airYou can choose from either edinburgh or Glasgow airports, both of which offer direct flights and connections to a wide range of domestic and international destinations. We even provide an airport pick-up service at the start of each semester.

By road or railStirling is well connected to the uK road and rail network, providing easy access to cities throughout the uK. it is less than one hour to Glasgow or edinburgh.

GETTING aROUNd

Our campus is 2.5km away from Stirling city centre, and is well connected by a regular, frequent bus service to the city and the surrounding area.
