Rethinking the Display of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Collections of Decorative Arts & Design

Presenter: Diane CharbonneauSaturday, January 11, 2014, 11 a.m.

Minneapolis Institute of ArtsPillsbury Auditorium

Go behind the scenes at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to discover new curatorial approaches to decorative arts and design. Since 2011, the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has housed an entirely reinstalled collection. Some 900 works, from the Renaissance to today, are on permanent display.

This latest and most thought-provoking presentation results from a combination of instinct and in-depth knowledge of the museum’s holdings. These crowd-pleasing galleries are considered part of the wealth of Montreal, UNESCO City of Design.

Diane Charbonneau, curator of Modern and Contemporary Decorative Arts at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts since 2000, holds master’s degrees from Simon Fraser University and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Her curatorial experience spans Dale Chihuly to Yves Saint Laurent, with many stops in between.

Call for Papers

“It’s a Small World After All”University of Missouri-Columbia

Art History and Archaeology Graduate Student Association Symposium

Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8, 2014

Keynote: Friday evening, Dr. Tyler Jo Smith (Associate Professor of Classical Art and Archaeoogy at the University of Virginia)

The Art History and Archaeology Graduate Student Association at the University of Missouri invite sub-missions from graduate students that take an object-based approach to the importance of “smallness” in the realms of art and material culture.

Often, “small” objects and works of art have been overlooked or marginalized by scholars, being catego-rized as “minor” or “decorative” arts consequently being relegated to the realm of the insignificant. Yet, these small items were often produced with delicate and careful artistic skill, were used and treasured by their original owners, were ornamented with or created from expensive luxury material, and above all, were culturally significant. Likewise, smaller elements of larger artworks, such as painting and architec-ture, are often overlooked in light of the larger and more overpowering whole. However, such smaller elements often hold important cllues for understanding social status, cultural context, and symbolism. This symposium would like to turn the tables and focus on what makes small items interesting and significant. The material under consideration should deal with issues of smallness and may be literally, conceptually, or in name only “small.”

Possible subjects that investigate the theme of smallness may include, but are not limited to: - Miniatures and or toys - Smaller components of a larger work - Small archaeological finds including coins, ivories, metals, bone, or pottery - Text and inscriptions - Painting - Jewelry - Table wares - Luxury items - Architecture and architectural sculpture - Small-scale topography, town planning, trade and production

Topics from any historical period of Art History, Archaeology, Material Culture, and related fields will be considered for 20-minute presentations. All presentations will be held on Saturday, March 8.

Submissions should be submitted electronically to [email protected] no later than January 10, 2014. Proposals should consist of a 250-500 word abstract and a CV.

About the NCMA. The North Carolina Museum of Art is the state’s art musuem. It was founded in 1947 when the North Carolina General Assembly appropriated $1 million for the purchase of works of art, making North Carolina the first state in the nation to acquire a public art collection. The Samuel H. Kress Foundation matched the state’s appropriation with a gift of 75 Europen paintings and sculptures in 1960. The NCMA first opened the expansive new West Building for the permanent collection.

The NCMA is best known for its outstanding survey of European art, including works by Giotto, Botticelli, Raphael, van Dyck, Rubens, Jordaens, Lievens, Boucher, Canova, Carpeaux, and Monet. The pre-modern American galleries feature work by Copley, Stuart, Cole, Homer, Heade, Bierstadt, Eakins, Sargent, Chase, and Frieseke. The NCMA has the largest collection of Rodin sculptures in the Southesast. The modern galleries present major works by such American and European artists as Kirchner, Hartley, Feininger, Manship, O’Keefe, A. Wyeth, Delvaux, Kline, Dieben-korn, Motherwell, Moore, Lawrence, E. Kelly, and F. Stella. More recent artists include Kiefer, Baselitz, Richter, Scully, Rothenberg, Shapiro, R. Paine, El Anatsui, Viola, and Plensa. There are also smaller, but active collections of ancient Egyptian and Classical art, and the arts of Africa and the ancient Americas, as well as a gallery dedicated to Jewish ceremonial art.
