Celts soCCer UNIVERSITY of ST. THOMAS 2011
Aaron Champenoy brings 15 years of coaching experience to UST. He has also coached
with the Houston Dynamo Youth Academy, where he worked directly with the development
of players. Champenoy has completed a certificate of coaching from the English FA and also
holds a NSCAA High School Coaching Special Topics certification, as well as the NSCAA
National and Advanced National Diploma, both with Distinction. Champenoy was also active
with the Nebraska Olympic Development Program where he was a Head Coach for four
years.
Champenoy, a 2003 Bellevue University graduate, finished his playing career as a two-time
MCAC First Team player and a three-time All-Nebraska College first team selection. In 2001,
his final season as a player, Champenoy added an All-Region IV First Team award and
received All-American Honors to round out his resume. Champenoy was also the first men’s
soccer player to be named the Bellevue University Athlete of the year for 2001-2002.
In four seasons at Bellevue University in Nebraska, Champenoy led his previous team, the
Bruins, to four consecutive appearances in the MCAC and Region IV tournaments. In those
four seasons the Bruins placed 26 players on the MCAC All-Conference teams (four player
of the year winners), nine players to the Region IV team, and nine more with All American
honors. The 2005 and 2006 Bruins team finished with a two-year record of 33-9-0, 2005
national ranking of #17, and back to back MCAC tournament championships (Giving the
Bruins 4 MCAC titles in six years).
“UST is a great institution with the potential to be a consistent national power, and the city
of Houston is an ideal location to continue to build this new program. There is a wealth of
soccer talent in this city and I plan on tapping into that talent early and often. My goal is to
use this position to help mold student athletes that will succeed on the field, in the
classroom, as well as in society and the workforce.”
A native of Omaha, NE; Champenoy lives with his wife Angelica in Houston along with their
four children; Cayden (11), Ava (9), Aleta (1), and Piper (6 months).
During the first three seasons of the soccer program at
UST, the team quickly became respected across the nation
despite its relative infancy. The combined record was 22-
23-3 with a great deal of improvement throughout. The
Celts have played a very high level of competition in their
early seasons, defeating conference champions, nationally
ranked opponents as well as many national tournament
qualifiers.
The best season for the Celts was 2010. Once again the
Celts were seeded No. 2 in A.I.I. Conference Tournament,
but they made it to the championship of the tournament for
the first time. The Celts faced nationally ranked No. 2
Simon Fraser in the championship match. Although the
Celts lost the match 0-1, the Celts earned a birth to the
NAIA National Tournament in only its fourth year. UST
finished with a record of 10-7-2, playing a very strong
schedule including six national tournament qualifiers. The
Celts placed six players on the All-Conference Teams.
Seven seniors graduated including four starters and
leading goal scorer, All-Conference and All Region
selection Jad el Masri as well as three-time All-Conference,
All-Region, and All-American Goalkeeper Lukas Simon.
The 2011 squad has nine seniors including four All-
Conference players. A strong recruiting class looks to keep
up the winning tradition established by the previous
players. This team will have the opportunity to compete as
a member of the Red River Conference and begin new
traditions. The team will be looking to Captain Jack Brett
to lead the team on and off the field. Along with Brett,
Rafael Bustos will be an attacking threat for the Celts.
Bustos has led the team in scoring two out of the last three
seasons. This team continues to impress and improve,
and with the very strong returning squad currently in place
there is no doubt that the 2011 season will be another very
successful campaign.
As this program continues to grow and mature, the
constant goals are simple: do everything to the highest
standard, whether it is done in the classroom, in our
community or on the field. To out-work everyone and to
improve every day is the only way to move forward. This is
a program that will continue to make noise and other teams
in this region and nationally will certainly be looking out for
the Celts.

Celts run to the 2011 NAIA National
