Research into the leadership structure of the UK’s largest companies suggests turnover rates or ‘churn’ in the position of chief executive are much lower than commonly perceived.

Professor of HR Management and Organisation, Malcolm Higgs and PhD student Peter Rejchrt, carried out the work in collaboration with executive search consultants Thorburn McAlister. They examined data from companies in the FTSE-350 index to explore changes in senior executive and board positions over a five year period.

Just 51 chief executives moved to their job from another chief executive position. Two thirds of chief executives in the FTSE-350 are recruited as internal appointments, which may indicate that boards wish to maintain strategic continuity by appointing home grown talent. The average length of service of a chief executive in the FTSE-350 is 6.35 years and 5.91 in the FTSE-100 which contrasts with previous reports of tenure in the FTSE-100 suggesting an average figure of 3.25 years.

“It is accepted wisdom that chief executives are highly vulnerable to being attracted to a higher paying role, ready to leave for a better deal – but our research challenges this,” says Malcolm.

“Evidence suggests their moving around occurs far less than assumed, with little movement from one chief exec position to another. In these financially turbulent times, with pay and bonuses in the spotlight, we should ask ourselves if high levels of remuneration are really keeping people in post, or if the impetus to move isn’t as strong as perceived.”

Research and learningHigh quality research is a hallmark of the Business School. Our academics are involved in significant projects involving major companies, government agencies and other external organisations. Many are carried out in collaboration with other world class researchers elsewhere in the University and beyond. In today’s fast-moving world, it is more important than ever to be at the forefront of developments. Our students benefit because the outcomes of our academics research directly informs their teaching.

Education Developer Jean Leah says: “The reason our programmes are so successful lies in the expert specialisms of our academics. They are examining today’s important business issues and can speak with authority on both problems and opportunities. Their knowledge goes far beyond the textbook.”

World class research The importance and relevance of our work was recognised in the UK’s last national research assessment (RAE 2008); 55 per cent of our research papers which were submitted for review by leading academics were judged ‘world class’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

There are many examples at the Southampton Business School of fascinating research projects that are already making a difference in the wider world. We are members of the Lancs Initiative, an innovative collaboration involving four universities. Professor Sally Brailsford and colleagues are examining how the analysis, modelling and simulation techniques of operational research can make a difference in healthcare, logistics and other key systems. It has been awarded £5.4m by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

We are part of a University of Southampton collaboration to reduce the operational costs of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution so that it can focus more resources on its lifesaving work. Professor Douglas Macbeth is leading on this project at the Business School.

Our Accounting and Finance team consider a wide range of current problems in financial markets and international banking. Issues include risk, accountability and governance in organisations, corporate social responsibility and reporting, taxation and audit.

Digital technologies and how interactive Web 2.0 tools can be used by companies as part of their marketing are explored at Southampton, partly through workshops with business leaders. We hosted the prestigious 2012 Academy of Marketing Conference.

We are using the principles of management science to improve rail transport, as companies want to increase traffic on the network. Better operational planning and scheduling can make the most of existing systems and technologies, improving efficiencies while minimising delays.

Improving Emotional IntelligenceThe role of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in human resource management is being examined by Dr Nicholas Clarke; in particular the question of whether these abilities can be improved through training.

All our students are expected to hone their research skills during their studies. You may also be able to get involved in a bigger research project. Many programmes have opportunities for student projects, supervised by our academic team.

Our academics are involved in significant projects involving major companies, government agencies and other external organisations.

Research centres and facilitiesWith a reputation for linking fundamental research with real-world applications, Southampton is home to cutting-edge research centres that consistently break new ground.

Our research centres have strong links with business, industry and government. For example, our National Oceanography Centre Southampton provides large-scale infrastructure and support for the entire UK marine research community while collaborating with the oil, gas and communications industries. We also strive to bring together national and international experts to address critical issues facing society and this is the case in our Institute for Life Sciences where biosciences help tackle issues such as climate change and human health.

All our research centres at Southampton focus on global challenges that really impact on society. Our Optoelectronics Research Centre focuses on photonics research and the centre has played a major role in developing the optical telecommunications technology that underpins the internet.

Other facilities include the Southampton Wind Tunnels for aerodynamics testing, yacht and sail design and the University’s supercomputer, one of the most powerful university-owned supercomputers in the UK, that postgraduate students have access to for use in research projects.

Researchers cannot be constrained by the boundaries that separate traditional subject areas. Therefore our innovative approach to research enables our postgraduate students to work effectively across disciplines, creating excellent opportunities for professional development. Southampton also has four Doctoral training Centres (DTCs) that help our students develop the skills they need to address some of society’s biggest problems including those related to climate change, energy, our ageing population and hi-tech crime.

LibrariesOur facilities are among the best in the country. The Hartley Library on the Highfield Campus is one of the leading research libraries in the UK. Facilities include a state-of-the-art learning centre, with consultation rooms, ‘walk in’ internet access, a language study area with computers linked to software for a range of languages, a café and a study lounge.

The Hartley Library houses specialist collections including the Broadland Archives, the papers of the Duke of Wellington, world renowned collections relating to Jewish history and culture, and the Ford Collection of British Official Parliamentary Publications.

Learning environment

Southampton Business SchoolThe School’s credentials are second to none. Our international reputation has been further enhanced through the work of our research centres:

Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems (CORMSIS)Covers a wide spectrum from theoretical mathematical developments to problem structuring and knowledge management.

Centre for Risk ResearchEncourages a deeper appreciation of the nature of risk and how to improve the quality of decision-making when managing risk and uncertainty.

Centre for Narrative StudiesExplores the role that narrative plays in discovering what organisations know about themselves and how others perceive them.

Centre for Research in Accounting, Accountability and Governance (CRAAG)Focuses on the relationship between accounting, accountability and governance.

Centre for Banking, Finance and Sustainable Development Focuses on the link between the financial sector, economic growth and development.

Centre for Strategic InnovationFocuses on innovation as a driver for new businesses and markets.

We have a spirit of research that is firmly embedded in our culture, which helps to set us apart from other universities. It is this environment that makes studying here a unique and exciting experience.

A lively cityClose to the city centre, the University forms an integral part of this dynamic, multicultural city. Our location offers a vibrant mix of recreation, culture and entertainment – from restaurants, cafés, bars and nightclubs to cinemas, sports facilities, internationally acclaimed arts venues and one of the south of England’s top shopping centres. The University is next to Southampton Common, a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest with extensive areas of public open space and managed woodland.

Whether you fancy a lunch with friends or dancing into the small hours, Southampton has the right venue. From intimate lounge bars and roof terraces to Leisure World, which houses a bowling alley, several restaurants and bars, a 13-screen cinema and two nightclubs. Historic Oxford Street is home to Southampton’s finest restaurants, but wherever you are in the city you will be spoiled for choice, with venues offering a wide variety of cuisines from across the globe and catering for every budget. In the city centre you will also find West Quay, one of the south coast’s top shopping centres. Whatever your musical tastes there are great venues in Southampton for live music. The Joiners, for example, is known for up-and-coming bands – Coldplay, Oasis and Radiohead all played there before they were famous. The Guildhall is a multi-purpose venue that stages jazz and rock as well as a range of contemporary and classical music.

Southampton’s thriving port handles in excess of 42 million tonnes of cargo annually. It is the cruise industry capital of northern Europe and is engaged in sustained and continued city centre development that continually strives to improve its already enviable facilities.

A connected cityJust over an hour from central London, Southampton has excellent transport links with the rest of the UK and internationally, by road, rail, sea and air. The city is serviced by two mainline train stations, with direct trains to London Waterloo and within easy reach of the Eurostar at St Pancras International. Southampton Airport offers regular flights to UK and major European destinations. Our own award-winning unilink bus service connects all Southampton campuses and halls of residence, the city centre, the airport and both railway stations.

Less than half an hour from Southampton is the New Forest National Park, with vast open heathland and beautiful forest. The resorts of Bournemouth and Poole are just down the coast, while a short ferry ride takes you to the Isle of Wight, which hosts Skandia Cowes Week, the largest and most prestigious international sailing regatta in the world.

A historic citySouthampton has a fascinating history. It was from here in 1415 that Henry V set sail for Agincourt. The Pilgrim Fathers first set sail from here in 1620 on their historic journey to the New World, and the ill-fated Titanic sailed from Southampton in 1912.

Southampton has a rich aviation heritage, with the Spitfire, the fighter aircraft that won the Battle of Britain, developed in the region in the 1930s. As well as an area of outstanding natural beauty, the New Forest has a fascinating history. Created in 1079 by William the Conqueror as an area for hunting deer, it became an important source of timber for the Royal Navy. Today the forest retains many historical rural practices, such as pasturing of ponies, cattle, pigs and donkeys in the open forest by local inhabitants, known historically as the ‘commoners’.

A modern cityToday, Southampton has one of the biggest commercial ports in Europe, and the city is known across the world as the home of the giant cruise liners, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. Its coastal location means that Southampton offers a vast range of opportunities for sport and leisure, with waterfront marinas and a major focus on water sports, sailing and ocean racing. The city hosts the largest on-water boat show in Europe – the annual Southampton Boat Show.

WinchesterThe historic city of Winchester – England’s ancient capital – is just 12 miles north of Southampton, and is home to the University’s internationally renowned Winchester School of Art. Popular for its bustling shopping streets and spectacular architecture, Winchester is perhaps best known for its 11th century cathedral and the Great Hall, which houses the mysterious Round Table of King Arthur. The city’s rich cultural heritage is complemented by a lively atmosphere and a wide variety of pubs and restaurants, museums, theatres and galleries.

We will introduce you to new concepts and knowledge, which can make all the difference in the job market.

Programme overviewFull-time and part-time Study – MBA ProgrammesFull-time MBA student receive formal instructions normally on two to four full days per week. during the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.* The rest of the week is used for group work and private study.

The part-time study on the MBA involves an average of two to three days, or approximately six evenings attendance in the School per month during term time between October and May, consistent with a three year completion period. On completion of all the taught modules you will be given an additional six months to complete the dissertation.

How will you learn?Your understanding of the subjects covered and your ability to use the knowledge and skills gained will be enhanced through a variety of methods and strategies. These also aim to promote continuing professional development. Some of the key learning approaches that you will experience as a student in the School will include:

Group workGroup work is recognised as vital in your development when looking forward to, or continuing in, a management role. You will be supported in learning how to form and maintain group cohesiveness to achieve clearly defined outcomes, such as a business report, a group presentation or a combination of both. Group work will be managed through different ways reflecting approaches you may well experience in the work place. In some cases you will be grouped by the lecturer and at other times you will have the task to form your own group.

Learning alongside other studentsThroughout your time with us you will be working alongside fellow students from a wide range of cultural and geographical backgrounds. This is a powerful resource and we are particularly keen to encourage you to set up learning networks with other students that may extend beyond the time of your study at Southampton.

You will be expected to learn to communicate with each other as well as your lecturers in a variety of contexts. During a large group lecture you may be given the opportunity to discuss a specific problem or complete a task in small groups, often with people who are sitting alongside you. The possible answers would be shared by the large group as guided by your teacher.

You will be an ‘active’ learner through taking part in small group discussions and offering your views on many occasions.

e-learningE-learning facilities are provided through a learning environment called ‘Blackboard’ which enables access to many additional resources and supporting learning materials. Other e-learning environments will also be available for certain modules.

* As with all our programmes formal examinations take place in January and May/June.

Full-time and part-time Study – MSc ProgrammesStudy on our MSc programmes follows a schedule of lectures and tutorials. Several modules can be studied during the same period. Teaching takes place during the autumn, spring and summer terms with a few modules scheduled for evenings and the Easter vacation, usually Optional modules. Formal examinations take place in January and May/June each year at the end of each semester.

Part-time study on our MSc programmes involves an average of six half-days attendance at the School per month during term-time between October and May. Students are normally expected to complete a part-time programme in 2 years. Again, if you pass the module assessments to a satisfactory standard you are permitted to continue work for a further six months leading to the submission of an MSc dissertation in January.*

Farahnoosh Berahman MSc Human Resource Management

“After taking my first degree at home in Iran, I decided I wanted to study for a postgraduate degree in the UK. I researched on the Internet to find the universities with the best rankings and received several offers, but chose to come to Southampton.

“It has been a very interesting year. My studies have been a mixture of formal sessions and group work, one of the modules on interview skills included a lot of role playing which I found very useful. I settled in quickly and made friends and now plan to stay on to try to find a job in Britain after I graduate.

“One of the highlights of my degree was the summer school in France. I was part of a group from Southampton at the Ecole de Management, Normandie. We learned a lot about business in Europe including European law and logistics and also studied the language. It wasn’t all work, there was also time for visits to see more of France.

“I have also become a Digital Champion at the University, working with organisations to improve the way they use social media. I found the subject so interesting, I am now writing my dissertation on the increasing use of social media in recruitment.”

MSc Knowledge and Information Systems Management

“As the UK is leading the world in e-commerce and information systems, I was keen to come here from my home in Mexico to study the subject at postgraduate level. The Southampton Business School has a good reputation in this area. Lecturers are involved in research and use the results in their teaching, we are not learning from out of date text books.

“I have been studying how managers can transfer knowledge and share it within organisations, a process that makes information a company asset. During my studies I was also course rep for Knowledge and Information Systems which was a good experience.

“The University of Southampton is a great place for networking. I have got involved with the Digital Economy Research Group which brings together academics from many disciplines. I have met people from social sciences, archaeology, engineering and computer science. This has been very useful as working together sparks new ideas.

“I have also worked as a ‘Digital Champion’ at the university promoting the use of social networking at conferences. In fact, my dissertation is about how researchers can use social networking to acquire and share new knowledge.”
