Syllabus for M.A. Degree Course

(Under “85 Pattern”, Non-Semester)

HISTORY

(From June 1990)

Introduction of ’85 Pattern, Non-SemesterExaminations for Post-Graduate Course

I. (1) There will be ‘Term End’ examination of the firstterm of the academic year. It will be held onconvenient dates sometime in November/December, as may be decided by the Universityauthorities.

(2) Each paper for the ‘Term End’ examination willbe of 60 marks and will have the duration ofthree hours. The marks obtained by the studentout of 60 will then be converted into the marksout 20.

(3) There will be an‘Annual’ examination at the endof academic year sometime in April/May as maybe decided by the University authorities. Eachpaper at the ‘Annual’examination will carry 80marks and will be of three hours duration.

(4) The question paper for the ‘Term End’examination will be set on the syllabi prescribedfor the first term. The question paper for the‘Annual’ examination will be set on the syllabi ofthe entire academic year. The question is in the

annual examination will be by marks, in the ratioof approximately 40% on the syllabus prescribedfor the first term approximately 60% on thesyllabus prescribed for the second term.

(5) The syllabi as prescribed for the Semester I andII at M.A. and M.Com. under semester systemwould continue to be the syllabi of the first termand second term respectively, under‘85 Pattern’.Similarly the syllabi prescribed for Semester IIIand IV under semester system for M. A./M. Com. examinations would respectively be thesame under the ‘85 Pattern’. The Boards ofStudies are revising the syllabi according to the‘85 Pattern’. The revised syllabi shall beintroduced with the notification.

II. M. Sc. and M. A. under Science Faculty :

(1) For M. Sc. and M. A. (in Geography, Statisticsand Mathematics) courses under faculty ofScience the Semester System will be continuedas at present with the conduct of semester endexamination at the end of each semester.However, the proportion of external and internalcomponents will be changed from 60 : 40(80 marks for semester end examination of thecourse and 20 marks for the internal assessmentof the same course).

(2) The Practice of Departmental Courses willhenceforth be valid for I.G. (M.A.,M.Sc.) Coursesunder the Faculty of Science and not for M.A.

under Mental, Moral and Social Science Faculty,Arts Faculty and M.Com. under CommerceFaculty.

(3) The syllabi in the Departmental as well asUniversity courses shall be for the time being thesame as under the semester system. The revisedas presented with due notification.

(4) Except these University science departments andP.G. centres (for subjects in Science Faculty)situated at other colleges or in recognisedinstitutions which have been granted permissionfor academic flexibility, all other ScienceDepartments and P.G. Centres in Science Facultysubjects will follow the pattern of 12 UniversityCourses +8 Departmental Courses as at present.This University as well as Departmental Coursesshould be distributed in equal proportion over thefour semesters.

(5) For all examinations whether University orDepartmental, whether for external assessmentor internal assessment minimum marks for passingunder each head of passing will 40% subject tothe application of existing rules for gracing ofmarks and condonation of failure. Thus for internalassessment the minimum marks required forpassing in a course shall be Eight (out of Twenty)and for external/semester end examination in acourse the minimum marks required for passingwill be Thirty two out of Eighty.

III. Standard of Passing :

(1) The candidate is required to obtain atleast 32marks out of 80 in each paper at the ‘Annual’examination. He shall be declared to have passedin the paper provided he/She has secured anaggregate to of 40% marks in the ‘Term End’examination and ‘Annual’ examination takentogether, in each, in each paper.

(2) The candidate having obtained 32 marks out of80 marks in the annual examination but failing toobtain an aggregate of 40% in the Annualexamination and the Term End examination takentogether may improve his/her aggregateperformance in the paper either by appearing forTerm-End examination or for Annual examinationor both. Passing at the Term-End examination isnot compulsory.

(3) The candidate failing to secure 32 marks in theAnnual examination shall have to appear forsubsequent annual examination in that paper.

IV. Award of Class :

The class in respect of M.A., M.Sc. M.C.S. andM.Com. examinations be awarded to the students onthe basis of aggregate marks obtained by the candidatesin all the papers at the first and second year takentogether.The award of class shall be as under :1. 70% and above ..First class with Distinction2. 60% and above but ..First Class

less than 70%

3. 55% and above but less than 60% .. HigherSecond Class

4. 50% and above but less than 55%..Second Class

5. 40% and above but less than 50%..Pass class

6. Less than 40% ..Failure

VI. New Examinaiton Pattern :

(1) The Term-End examination will be conductedonce in the academic year only. The rules/ordinances given in Circular No. 210 of 1982-83dated 21st January. 1988, will be made applicablefor ‘Annual’examinaiton only.

(2) The candidate at the M.A., M.Sc. and M.Com.will be allowed to join the Second Year of thesame course irresepective of the number ofbacklog at the First Year.

(3) In case of M.A./M.Com., semester examinationsthe students admitted in 1985-86 shall proceedthrough the Semester Stream and the lastexamination under the semester pattern will beheld in October/November, 1987, April/May, 1988,and in October/November, 1988.

(4) The student who has taken the admission underthe Semester System in the academic year 1985-86 or earlier will have to appear for theDepartmental Courses as before. From theacademic year 1986-87, the Departmental Courseswill be termed as ‘Optional Papers’. Theresponsibility of setting of question papers, of theseOptional papers will rest with the University,

However, for the Term End examination ofNovember, 1986, the work of setting of questionpapers and assessing the answer books will restwith the Departments Post-Graduate Centresconcerned, as a special case.

(5) The Term-End examinaiton for the Optionalpapers will be of 60 marks and three hoursduration and these marks are to be convertedinto the marks out of 20, these marks are to becommunicated to the students by college/department concerned.

(6) The student who has appeared under the semestersystem at M.A./M.Com. examinations but failedat these examinations at the last chance will berequired to reappear for the correspondentcourses/subjects papers as may be decided bythe Boards of Studies. The results of suchcandidates will be delcared in accordance withthe semester system. This provision is for thestudents who have appeared and facilitate at thelast examination to be held in October 1988 underthe semester system.

(7) The question banks at M.A. and M.Com. will bedelinked from the examinations with effect from1986-87 for examinations under ‘85 Pattern’.

(8) To respect of the external candidate, for M.A. orM.Com. examination, he will have to register andappear for the annual examination of 80 marksper paper only. These marks will be convertedinto marks out of 100 and the result will bedeclared accordingly.

(9) In respect of the practical examinations in thesubjects like Experimental Psychology.Anthropology at the Post-Graduate level, therewill be no practical examination at the term end.Practical examinations will be conducted onlyonce at the time of annual examinations as isdown in does of Under-Graduate classes.

(10) The rates for the paper setting and assessmentof answerbooks at the ‘Term End’ examinationat M.A. and M.Com. will be the same asprescribed in the schedule ‘a’ of scale ofremuneration for examination work part I inexistance. The persons entrusted with the workof preparation of the results and conversion ofmarks will be entitled for a remuneration of Rs.0.50. per candidate as in case of Under-Graduateclasses.

(11) The pattern of question papers for the Term-Endexamination at M.A./M.Com. provisionally forOctober/November, 1986 and October/November,1987 will be the same as it was under theSemester system. As the question banks aredelinked from the examinations, the candidates innew system ‘85 Pattern’ will get an over-all option.In other, works, candidate appearing under ‘85Pattern’ will be required to answer any fourquestions out of eight questins of Sections I andSection II taken together.
