The intellectual and social freedom environment of the department provides students to growing intellectually, socially and spiritually The University of Moratuwa is a one of the corner pillars of engineering sector of Sri Lanka. It has produced tens of thousand of engineering person- alities to the nation. With the support from British Council and late Professor Caldera’s tireless hard work, the University of Moratuwa decided to set up a BSc degree course in Quantity Surveying under Department of Building Economics. Finally the QS profession in Sri Lanka was formerly recognized by the education system of the country. Out of many engineering courses conducting in University of Moratuwa, one of the prominent courses, BSc in Quantity Surveying (Honours) has reached to a remarkable milestone; it’s Silver Jubilee in the year of 2008. Since 1983, to date, during the 25 years of successful journey, the contribution made by the Department of Building Economics towards the industry and economy of the country is invaluable. The Department of Building Economics was founded in 1983. Undergraduate program leading to BSc Quantity Surveying (Honours) degree commenced in 1985 and the graduation of the first cohort of students took place in 1991. Then the first course revision of the Quantity Surveying program introduced in 1991. The department has started the self-funded masters program in Project Management in 1996.The landmark achievement of Department of Building Economics was the accreditations for BSc Quantity Surveying programme by the Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors (RICS) and the Australian Institute of Charted Surveyors (AIQS) in 1997 and 1999 respectively. RICS reaccredita- tions were followed in 2001, 2003 and 2006; and AIQS reaccredited course in 2005. Thus, the BSc in Quantity Surveying of the Department of Build- ing Economics is the only such degree to be accredited by both RICS and AIQS in the South Asian Region. The Department of Building Economics implemented the semester based modular system in 2005, and started new degree course BSc in Facilities Management programme in 2006. The BSc in Facilities Management programme received conditional accreditation by RICS in August 2006. Department of Building Economics of University of Moratuwa is currently the pioneer institute to offer programmes in Quantity Surveying, Facilities Management and Project Management. The Department is unique in nature as it is the only department which offers degree programmes in these fields in the whole university system in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Quantity Surveyors, SLQS-UAE is proud to have hundreds of graduate quantity surveyors memberships produced by the Department of Building Economics of Mortuwa university and glad to wish it’s all success in the future .
