WHICH PROGRAMME IS RIGHTFOR ME?

International Foundation Programme (IFP) Foundation year

What is it? A year of academic study, with English languagesupport (p6).

A year of academic study prior to a particularundergraduate degree (p9).

Who is it for? International students who need to improve theirqualifications, skills or English language beforetaking an undergraduate degree (p6).

Students with acceptable English languageability but with school-leaving qualificationsbelow the acceptable level required (p5).

Why should I study it?

To gain entry to a range of undergraduatedegrees in the humanities, sciences andsocial sciences (p6).

To prepare you for the undergraduate degreeof your choice (p9).

Am I eligible? You are eligible if secondary education in yourcountry does not reach a high enough levelfor direct entry to UK degrees or if you haveacceptable academic qualifications but do notyet have a high enough standard of English (p8).

You are eligible if you have a minimum of twopasses at A level, or another recognised post-GCSE qualification, but not in the subject areaneeded for your chosen degree, or you did notobtain grades high enough for your chosendegree (p9).

How do I apply?

If your education oryour experience sofar has not given youthe qualifications, studyskills or the Englishlanguage ability that youneed to take the degree ofyour choice, you can applyfor one of our degreeprogrammes that includesa foundation year.

International FoundationProgramme (IFP)This programme, designedespecially for internationalstudents, includes additionalEnglish language support andprovides entry to the wide rangeof subjects in our Faculties ofHumanities, Sciences and SocialSciences (see p6).

How do I know if I’m eligible?You are eligible to apply for IFP if: • you are from a country wheresecondary education does notreach the level needed for directentry to UK undergraduatedegrees

or

• you have reached an academicstandard acceptable for first-yearentry to a degree programme,but do not have a high enoughstandard of English languageto cope with the demands ofa degree programme.

A level, or another recognisedpost-GCSE qualification, but:• not in the subject areas neededfor your chosen degree

or

• you did not obtain grades highenough for your chosen degree.

Course structureThe IFP is a modular course taughtover three terms, starting inSeptember or January. All studentstake one module in Skills andAcademic English and either take a module in English for AcademicStudy or complete a project.

The Skills and Academic Englishclasses differ from ‘Englishlanguage’ classes as you will beworking to develop skills to fullyenjoy your academic experiencein the UK. These include, forexample, developing your senseof responsibility in seminar/groupwork and as an independentstudent, improving your skills in timemanagement, project managementand developing your analytical andcritical skills.

Students then choose threeother modules, from the listbelow, depending on theirchosen pathway:• Analogue Electronics• Art and Design• Business Management• Computing• Economics

• courses taught on the Canterburycampus, situated close to Londonand continental Europe

• a welcoming and safeinternational campus environmentwith on-campus accommodationoffered to all new IFP students for both the IFP year and the firstyear of their degree programme

• access to Kent’s extensive studysupport, welfare, computing,sports and leisure facilities, and a wide choice of clubs and societies

• a specially designed PersonalDevelopment PlanningProgramme to help youmanage your learning,succeed academically, thinkabout work experience andplan your career

Teaching and assessmentOur IFP is taught by our ownacademics, with occasional visitingexperts, and this allows us to offerteaching of an exceptional quality.Teaching is organised in smallgroups and includes lectures,seminars, tutorials, workshops,IT training and independentlearning. Assessment is througha combination of assignments,coursework and examinations.

Progressing to a degreeOn successful completion ofthe IFP (and through meeting theUniversity’s rules of progression andEnglish language requirements), you are guaranteed entry to a wide range of programmes at the University of Kent. Entry requirementsTo gain entry to the IFP programme,you need the following:• a good academic school-leavingcertificate with particularstrengths in subjects that arerelevant to your intended areaof study

• GCSE grade C Mathematics or equivalent for some degreeprogrammes. If you do not havethis level of qualification, you willneed to take the IFP Mathematicsand Statistics module

HONOURS DEGREE PROGRAMMESWITH A FOUNDATION YEAR

These subject-specificprogrammes are offeredas one-year, full-timecourses before you startStage 1 (the first year ofyour degree course). Theprogrammes are open toall students.

If you don’t have qualifications inthe appropriate subjects for yourchosen degree, if your gradesare not high enough or if you areapplying from a country wheresecondary education does notreach the level required for directentry to a UK degree, you shouldapply for a foundation programme.

If you register for one of thesecourses and your first language isnot English, we will assess you forlanguage competency. The courseDuring the foundation year, youstudy science subjects to thestandard required for degreestudy. The course is taught entirelyon our Canterbury campus withinthe School of Physical Sciencesand School of Mathematics,Statistics and Actuarial Science.

The course comprises lectures,practical laboratory classes andregular coursework assessments.It is carefully paced and includesrapid feedback on coursework sothat you can monitor your progressthroughout the year.

The University of Kent has runscience foundation years since1993. Since then, large numbersof students have achieved excellenthonours degrees and gone on tosuccessful scientific careers.

Possible modules may include:

Algebra and ArithmeticBasic mathematical skills thatare useful for understandingthe precision and accuracyof experimental results.

Chemical Reactivity This module enables you to goon to the Stage 1 degree moduleFundamental Chemistry for PhysicalScientists and Bioscientists byintroducing topics such as trendsin reactivity, reaction rates andorganic chemistry.

Graphs, Geometry andTrigonometry This module provides you withthe mathematical skills for: plottingexperimental data; trigonometry;and vectors.

Molecules and Analysis This module includes topicssuch as titrations, spectroscopy,thermodynamics and equilibria.

Properties of Matter Here, you cover radioactivity, statesof matter, properties of the elementsand chromatography.

ELECTRONIC ANDCOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING/COMPUTER SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

UCAS codes H605 andH614Once you have successfullycompleted the foundation year inElectronic and CommunicationsEngineering or Computer SystemsEngineering, you are guaranteeda place on one of the followingdegree courses:• Electronic and CommunicationsEngineering

• Computer Systems Engineering.

You may also have the opportunityto go on to a programme inMultimedia Technology and Design.

The courseThe foundation programmes followa common course structure.

ComputingThis module provides an introductionto programming, using Matlab,including applications tomathematics and electronics.

ElectronicsYou look at electronic circuits andsystems, measuring equipment andmethods, digital electronics, DC andAC circuits, and electromagneticsfor engineers.

MathematicsIn these modules, you study algebra,graphs, geometry, trigonometry,vectors, differential and integralcalculus, and differential equations.

Practical workPractical work is a particularlyimportant part of the foundationyear. Laboratory experiments,including the construction of atransistor radio, complement thework you do in your lecture courses.

AssessmentAssessment is by coursework,laboratory work, tests and writtenexaminations at the end of the year.

Entry requirementsMinimum course specific entryrequirements: DDD in 3 A levels (orequivalent) in subjects acceptableto the School of Engineering andDigital Arts, plus grade C GCSE(or equivalent) in Mathematics,Physics/Science and English.Candidates with internationalqualifications will be consideredon an individual basis and shouldinclude successful completionof national school-leavingqualifications with good grades inmathematics and physics/science.

MATHEMATICS

UCAS code G108Once you have successfullycompleted the foundation year inMathematics, you can then studyone of the following:• Actuarial Science*• Financial Mathematics• Mathematics• Mathematics and Accounting& Finance

• Mathematics and Statistics• Mathematics MMath• Mathematics and StatisticsMMathStat.

* If you wish to study ActuarialScience after your foundationyear, you should enrol in FinancialMathematics at Stage 1. Afterstarting Stage 1, contact theprogramme convener for ActuarialScience to discuss the processof changing your programme toActuarial Science at the start ofStage 2.

It may also be possible for you to goon to one of the degrees offered byKent Business School or the rest ofthe University.

The courseThe foundation year is taught onthe Canterbury campus. We havedesigned our programme to provideyou with a basis for subsequentstages of your degree studies. Thecourse includes the modules listedon this page.

Introductory Mathematics This module covers arithmetic,algebra and trigonometry inorder to refresh the necessarytechniques required for the study ofmathematics at an advanced level.

Additional Mathematics In this module, you study someof the topics found in the FurtherMathematics syllabus, includingcomplex numbers, matrices, seriesnumbers and functions, and limitsand techniques of mathematicalreasoning.

Calculus This module includes topics suchas differential and integral calculusand basic differential equations.

Graphs, Geometry andTrigonometryYou focus on graphs, the geometryof lines and circles, and vectors. An overview is given of fundamentalresults and concepts with a focuson problem solving.

Introduction to ProgrammingThis module introduces youto problem solving usingmicrocomputers and theMATLAB software package.

Mathematics Workshops These sessions review and extendtopics covered in other parts ofthe course, with the focus beingon developing independent studymethods, which will be essentialfor the remainder of your degree.

StatisticsIn this module, you look at dataanalysis, probability and statisticalanalysis, including an introductionto statistical computing.

Entry requirements We consider all applicationsindividually, but you should holda minimum of CCC at A level (orequivalent), including Mathematics.

The courseThis course provides you withthe opportunity to study themathematics, physics and practicallaboratory skills that you need forentry to honours programmes inPhysics and Astronomy, SpaceScience and Astrophysics.

The course comprises lectures,workshops, practical laboratoryclasses and regular coursework

assessments. It is carefully pacedand includes rapid feedback oncoursework so that you can monitoryour progress throughout the year.

The campus is just 25 minutes’walk (or a short bus-ride) fromCanterbury city centre, which is oneof Britain’s oldest cities. From theUniversity, there are wonderful viewsof the world-famous Cathedral andthe beautiful city and countrysidethat surround it.
