II. TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
Teaching evaluations and other evidence of quality teaching must be provided and should accurately
summarize ALL of your teaching activities. The absence of teaching evaluations may adversely affect your
application for Promotion and/or Tenure.
Philosophy of Teaching:
Briefly describe your philosophy of teaching and how you apply it to different types of learners, e.g. medical
students, graduate students, residents, fellows.
In the words of historian Will Durant, “education is the progressive discovery of our own ignorance”. My
main educational objective is to create an environment and context in which learners are motivated by
their need to know. The concept that education is merely the delivery of information, skills and knowledge
from teachers to students is inadequate and fails to capture what is truly important about education.
Instead, at the core of modern medical education is the principle that knowledge cannot be transmitted
from the teacher to the student but, instead, must be constructed by the mental activity of the learner.
Author and adult educator Malcolm Knowles wrote “the ultimate behavioral objective of schooling would
be: the individual engages efficiently in collaborative self-directed inquiry in self-actualizing directions”.
My teaching philosophy is founded on several of Knowles’ principles including,
1. stimulate the learner’s intellectual curiosities and the ability to develop questions based on those
curiosities
2. these should be questions answerable through inquiry rather than questions answerable by
authority or dogma
3. guide the learner’s ability to identify the data required to answer various kinds of questions and
sort the most relevant and reliable sources of the required data
4. assist the learner in developing the framework to organize , analyze and evaluate the data so as to
generate valid answers to questions
5. guide and encourage the learner’s ability to generalize, communicate and apply the answers to the
questions raised

I serve on the Surgical Education Committee of the Department of Surgery. In that capacity, I oversee and
assist in the administration of the General Surgery Residency Program including interactions with the SOM-
GME office and the Surgery RRC (Residency Review Committee). In addition, I developed and implemented
a comprehensive curriculum for the General Surgery Residency Program. I also oversee the Medical
Student Education Program, including the third-year required student clerkship in surgery as well as the
fourth year student elective/sub-internships in the Department of Surgery.
III. SERVICE ACTIVITIES:
See Guidelines for Promotion and Tenure, available online, for definitions and suggested documentation of
professional and academic service.
1. Professional Service (Patient Care):
The diverse area of Professional Service includes patient care. Select measures that most clearly and
concisely document your accomplishments and the value of these activities to the School of Medicine and
the University. Measure of both quantity and quality of activities are required. If necessary, applicants
should provide brief descriptions to assist reviewers. Measures of patient care activities include: number
of patients, time allocation in clinical activity, procedures completed, Relative Value Units (RVUs), and
value to the School of clinical service. If the primary quality evaluation is the subjective assessment of
peers, this should be demonstrated in letters from departmental colleagues, chair, or referees.
I have an active surgical oncology practice with a weekly, half-day outpatient clinic in our NCI designated
Westwood Cancer Center. As part of my practice, I have a clinical focus and emphasis on benign and
malignant pancreatic neoplasia. I am recognized as the regional/national expert in the management and
surgical treatment of these neoplasms. In addition, I have an active clinical and surgical practice in
conjunction with our orthopedic spine surgeons in the multi-disciplinary surgical treatment of complex
spine disorders. Specifically, I provide the surgical expertise and clinical coverage for patients undergoing
