UH Hilo’s uniqueness is captured in Hawai`i County’s social indices. Hawai`i County is the most ethnically and culturally diverse county in the United States, and is dramatically different from the other counties in the State:

• highest unemployment rate and highest percentage of persons in poverty

• Lowest per capita income and lowest median household income

• highest percentage of “ice use”

• increased rate of domestic violence

• majority of our island school population are students from families near the poverty level

58 percent of UH Hilo students, the highest percentage in the UH system, receive federal financial aid

To achieve full capacity as a comprehensive university, UH Hilo needs an investment of $5 million dollars.
