NEWS & NOTES FROM TITAN TERRITORY- Coming off a sensational rookie campaign, the nation’s leading returning scorer picked up an early preseason accolade as University of Detroit Mercy sophomore Antoine Davis was named the Horizon League’s Preseason Player of the Year. Davis - the 2019 HL Freshman of the Year - is the first Titan to earn the preseason honor since Ray McCallum in 2012. Last season, he finished third in the nation and led the Horizon League in offense at 26.1 points per game, just the fifth Titan to lead the league in scoring and the first freshman in conference history to accomplish that feat. He sank a NCAA freshman record 132, 3-pointers, breaking the mark held by Stephen Curry, and that number ranked him second in school history and fifth in the Horizon League record book.

- University of Detroit Mercy star sophomore guard Antoine Davis was named to the 20-man Jerry West Shooting Guard Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The award is named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its sixth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. Davis - the Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year - is the first Titan to ever appear on the national accolade watch list after he put together a historic freshman campaign. As a rookie, he was the HL Freshman of the Year and a finalist for the USBWA Wayman Tisdale Award for National Freshman Player of the Year along with Duke’s RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson and North Carolina’s Coby White - all of whom were top seven draft picks in the 2019 NBA draft.

- Nothing new for the Titans to have a family connection in the program and this season, Detroit Mercy will once again feature three Davis’ in head coach Mike Davis, assistant coach Mike Davis Jr. and sophomore guard Antoine Davis.

- Not only do you have the family connections on the staff, but there are a few other family connections between Titans and college coaches, NBA players and former NBA stars:Graduate student Brad Calipari is the son of current Kentucky head coach John CalipariJunior Dwayne Rose Jr. is the nephew of current Pistons’ guard Derrick RoseSophomore Chris Brandon is the nephew of former NBA player and head coach John Lucas and cousin to former NBA player John Lucas and former Texas standout Jai LucasFreshman Jamail Pink’s uncle is Clyde Drexler

- Graduate student Brad Calipari transferred to Detroit Mercy and will have the rare two years of eligibility as a graduate student. He spent three years at Kentucky and played in 27 games with the Wildcats, under the direction of his dad head coach John Calipari, and was part of 88 wins as the Wildcats advanced to the Elite 8 in 2017 and 2019 and the Sweet 16 in 2018.

- Another graduate senior will don the red, white and blue in B.J. Maxwell. He played three years with Abilene Christian University, seeing action in 72 games with 21 starts and averaging 5.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists, while shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 40.3 percent from behind the arc.

- And another veteran transfer looking to make an immediate impact is senio Justin Miller, a 6-8, 268-lb forward. He played three seasons for Louisiana Lafayette seeing action in 97 games with 59 starts and averaging 9.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists, shooting 44.9 percent. He tallied 11.1 points as a freshman starting 31 of 33 games and tallied 9.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists last season, second on the team in rebounding and assists. He posted five double-doubles as a junior and also scored a career-high 22 points on the road at Kansas.

- Last year, Detroit Mercy had freshman Willy Isiani on the roster, marking the first-ever Titan from the country of Georgia and this year will have another new foreign Titan in freshman Sam Hofman, who is believed to be the first-ever Titan from Belgium.

- Get your frequent flyer miles ready as the University of Detroit Mercy men’s basketball team has a number of power five schools on the non-conference schedule with nine away from the Motor City, including trips to North Carolina State, Clemson, Wyoming, Notre Dame, Gonzaga and a two-game tournament in Las Vegas against UC Irvine and Louisiana Lafayette. In fact, the first seven games will be on the road as the Titans first home game will be on Dec. 7 against Eastern Michigan. The opponents were a combined 258-176 (.594) a year ago with six teams earning postseason bids.

- The Titans are still waiting to hear back on their appeal to the NCAA on the APR santioned postseason ban. If they are allowed to compete for a championship, they will travel to Indianapolis for the postseason as the Horizon League men’s & women’s basketball championships will take place at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center.

- The Titans will have some exciting news being released in the next few weeks, which will include Hall Of Fame announcements and jersey retirements.

HEAD COACH MIKE DAVISMike Davis enters his second season as the Titan head coach, guiding the team to a tie for sixth in the Horizon League in 2018-19.

Detroit Mercy was picked to finish last in the league in the preseason poll, but Detroit Mercy notched 11 wins on the year and seven in conference play to qualify for the postseason. Led by star guard and son Antoine Davis, the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and First Team All-League, Detroit Mercy won the Gotprint.Com Legends Classic Subregional Championship game, presented by Old Trapper, with wins over Loyola Maryland and Bowling Green and had wins against conference co-champion Wright State and CollegeInsider.com Invitational Tournament finalist Green Bay.

Davis was named the 22nd head coach in program history on June 13, 2018, as he looks to take the program back to championship heights. “After an extensive search that included multiple high-quality candidates, we are pleased to

have Mike Davis join us as our new men’s basketball head coach,” said Detroit Mercy Director of Athletics Robert C. Vowels, Jr. “Mike has achieved great success as a coach and leader of young men, and as an individual, he reflects the values upon which our University is built. I am confident he will help return Titan basketball to a championship level.” Davis came to Detroit Mercy from Texas Southern University, where he spent six seasons building the Tigers into a perennial power in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with five postseason tournament appearances, including four NCAA Tournaments. For his efforts, he was named the SWAC Coach of the Year on three occasions. Texas Southern also had a team GPA of 3.0 and had four consecutive semesters of a perfect 1000 APR score. A high school basketball star in the state of Alabama, Davis played collegiately at the University of Alabama before embarking on a professional career. His coaching resume includes more than 20 years of experience. This includes 18 years of head coaching experience, building a 352-241 record with 14 postseason trips, nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament and guiding Indiana to a national championship runner-up effort in 2002. His squads have recorded at least 20 wins nine times, while posting a winning record in 14 of his 18 campaigns. In his six seasons at Texas Southern, he posted a 115-89 (.564) record, including an 88-20 mark in conference play. His teams won four regular-season titles and four conference tournament championships advancing to four NCAA Tournaments. In his final season at the helm of TSU, the Tigers won their first-ever NCAA Tournament game defeating North Carolina Central in the First Four.

Under his leadership, five Tigers were named the SWAC Player of the Year, a feat which had never occurred in the league and was the fourth-longest streak in the history of the NCAA. In addition, 11 earned All-League honors, three were tabbed the Defensive Players of the Year, two were selected the Newcomer of the Year and one was picked the Freshmen of the Year.

He started his collegiate head-coaching career at Indiana University from 2000-06 after serving as an assistant coach for three seasons under legendary head coach and Hall-Of-Famer Bobby Knight. At IU, he compiled a 115-79 record, 55-41 in the Big Ten, and led the Hoosiers to five postseason tournaments, including a run to the NCAA Championship game in 2002. Davis’ teams played some of their best basketball during the postseason tallying a 21-12 record in the month of March and a 7-4 NCAA Tournament mark.

He was named the 25th head coach in Indiana history on Sept. 12, 2000, succeeding Knight, and had the most successful first season of any of his 24 predecessors going 21-13 and finishing fourth in the Big Ten at 10-6. His 21 wins were four more than any other first-year IU head coach. He was also the first coach in Indiana history to open his tenure with three straight 20-plus win seasons and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances as he directed the Hoosiers to a share of the 2002 Big Ten championship and an appearance in the 2002 national championship game, while also defeating 22 nationally-ranked opponents.

In his second season, the Hoosiers were 25-12 and 11-5 in the Big Ten to share the regular season title. As the No. 5 seed in the South Regional of the NCAA Tournament, IU downed Utah (75-56) and UNC-Wilmington (76-67) to advance to the Sweet 16. The Hoosiers then ousted top-seeded Duke (74-73) and Kent State (81-69) to move into the Final Four.

In the national semifinal, Indiana overcame a halftime deficit to move past the West Regional’s No. 2 seed Oklahoma, 73-64, before falling to the East Regional’s No. 1 seed Maryland, 64-52, in the title contest. Prior to being named head coach Davis had already contributed significantly to the Indiana program. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with the Hoosiers. His successful recruitment of several of the country’s top prep players earned him national recognition at Indiana. In addition to his recruiting success, he was instrumental in the development of several players including A.J. Guyton, the Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player in 2000, Kirk Haston, a first-round NBA selection in 2001, and 2002 Big Ten MVP and consensus second-team All-American Jared Jeffries, who was the 11th overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. In Davis’ three seasons as an IU assistant, the Hoosiers compiled a 63-32 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons. After Indiana, Davis was named the head coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), where he led the Blazers to a 122-72 (.629) overall record with a 62-34 mark in Conference USA during his six years (2006-12). Davis also led his teams to success off the court and in the classroom as the team had four consecutive semesters of a perfect 1000 APR score. Davis had a highly successful season at UAB in 2010-11 leading the Blazers to the program’s first-ever Conference USA regular season title. In doing so, he was named the 2011 Conference USA Coach of the Year, while also earning NABC All-District Coach of the Year accolades. In 2010-11, Davis also guided the Blazers to an NCAA Tournament at-large berth with a record of 22-9 and a 12-4 mark in league play. UAB earned at least 20 victories in the regular season in four-straight years during Davis’ tenure (2007-2012), marking the first time that feat had been in achieved in program history. The Blazers also won at least 11 conference games in each of those seasons. Under Davis, the program clinched four consecutive postseason berths (three NITs and one NCAA Tournament). Davis subsequently etched his name in the record books as he became only the second coach in UAB history to reach 90 wins in a four-year span. The only other coach in program history to accomplish the feat was Hall of Famer Gene Bartow, who reached the pinnacle with a school-record 94 victories from 1983-87.

“Our vision in the Horizon League is to be a nationally recognized NCAA Division I conference that develops student-athletes to their fullest potential,” said Jon LeCrone, Horizon League Commissioner. “Mike is a proven winner and brings the knowledge, skill and values that our League embraces.” He started coaching at Miles College as an assistant in 1989-90 and then moved to Venezuela to work with the country’s national and professional teams. He arrived back in the states to coach in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) with the Wichita Falls franchise that eventually relocated to Chicago. Davis moved with the team not only as an assistant coach, but also as a player. Despite not playing professional basketball for five years, Davis averaged 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest in 1994-95. Davis was then an assistant coach at his alma mater from 1995-97 under David Hobbs at Alabama before taking the assistant coaching job at Indiana.

Davis spent his collegiate-playing career with the Tide after earning the state’s Mr. Basketball honor and All-America status in 1979. He was a standout for four seasons at Alabama and finished his career in the Top 25 on the Crimson Tide’s all-time scoring list with 1,211 points. In his first season, he played for the legendary C.M. Newton and then spent his final three years playing under another coaching legend, Wimp Sanderson.

Davis averaged 10.1 points per game for his collegiate career and ranks third all-time on the school’s steals list with 165. During his four seasons at Alabama, the Crimson Tide posted an 80-42 record and advanced to two NIT and two NCAA Tournaments. Davis is married to Tamilya Davis and the couple has one son, Antoine, the 2019 HL Freshman of the Year. Davis is also the father of current assistant coach Mike Davis, Jr., who was a member of the Indiana and UAB men’s basketball team that he coached and was an assistant with him at Texas Southern, and he also has one daughter, Lateesha.

13 POSTSEASON BERTHS 22 NBA/ABA DRAFT PICKS

Celebrating its 41st season of operation in the 2019-20 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in integrity and the development of students. Each of the League’s 2,700 Division I student-athletes has the opportunity to maximize athletic development and academic achievement, while also serving the broader community and growing in personal responsibility and accountability. Through athletics, the 175,000-plus undergraduates among Horizon League institutions have the opportunity to come together, learn and grow in life skills and opportunities.

The Horizon League membership features 10 public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky University, Oakland University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League announced that Purdue University Fort Wayne will join the Horizon League as its 11th member on July 1, 2020.

The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its core values: student-athlete well-being, integrity, respect and stewardship. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth.

The HL sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball).

The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians, AAA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members and a focus on basketball excellence, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included Butler University, the University of Evansville, Loyola University Chicago, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.

Among current members, Detroit Mercy joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001, and Oakland in 2013. Northern Kentucky University, accepted an invitation into the League on May 11, 2015, and the newest member, IUPUI, officially joined July 1, 2017.

On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top 10 collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSThe Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by two appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Game. Additionally, seven programs have advanced to the Sweet 16 in conference history. From 2004-2011, a Horizon League member won at least one game in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, leading all mid-major leagues.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the League’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifinals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play. The Phoenix backed up that performance by reaching the second round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2012.

Baseball has won a game in the NCAA Tournament in four of the last seven years (Valparaiso - 2013, Youngstown State - 2014. Wright State - 2015, 2016), highlighted by Wright State reaching the regional final round in 2015 and 2016. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last 16 NCAA Tournaments (Milwaukee 2003-05, UIC 2006-08, Oakland 2014), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years in the last decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005), while the Milwaukee women’s soccer program advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2011. Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League names nearly 1,900 student-athletes to the Academic Honor Roll each season for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better. In the latest graduation success report, Horizon League members held an average graduation success rate of 83.7 percent for student-athletes. Across the student-body population nationally, the average graduation rate was 64.6 percent. Additionally, every League school has graduated their student-athletes at least 13 percent higher than their student body at least once in the past five years.

COMMUNITYIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its leadership in the community. The League has conference-wide partnership with Special Olympics, One Love Foundation and Team IMPACT. Each institution hosts at least one Special Olympics event on their campus each year. The League also has affiliation with One Love Foundation, working to raise awareness about the warning signs of relationship abuse. Student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) members lead an escalation workshop on each campus. Additionally, each campus has at least one sports program partnering with Team IMPACT, which seeks to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by partnering with local college teams.

In addition to leadership in the community, one of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

MAJOR REACH/VISIBILITYHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of over 175,000 with over 1.1 million living alumni. League media markets include six of the nation’s top 36 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Cincinnati, covering nearly 10 million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

The Horizon League continues to enhance its media visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in the midst of an agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2 and ESPNU) and the men’s basketball championship (ESPN, ESPNU).

Additionally, the League was one of the first conferences in the nation to make its inventory of athletic events available in the digital space, launching the Horizon League Network in 2006. Having delivered over 3,300 live events in that span, the League began delivering events to ESPN3 in 2014 and provided over 600 live events in 2017-18.

While continuing to set the bar for live event streaming, the Horizon League has also played a role in supporting NCAA Championship events in Indianapolis. Most recently, the League co-hosted the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball 1st and 2nd Rounds at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. After co-hosting the 2013 and 2014 Men’s Basketball Midwest Regionals, the Horizon League was the co-host for the 2015 Men’s Basketball Final Four, the sixth time (1991, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2010) the League has served in that role. In addition, the Horizon League co-hosted the 2016 Women’s Basketball Final Four as well, marking the third time (2005, 2011) the conference has worked in that capacity.

In 2010, the Horizon League, along with national-runner up Butler University, co-hosted the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, becoming the first conference to host a Final Four while one of its members participated. A year later, the League successfully co-hosted the 2011 Women’s Final Four at Conseco Fieldhouse while Butler was playing in its second consecutive Men’s Final Four.

The Horizon League is scheduled to co-host the Men’s Basketball Final Four, with League member IUPUI, in 2021 and 2026 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

GOVERNANCEIn 2017-18, the League led the way with its implementation of a first-of-its-kind governance structure that provides student-athletes with a voice and a vote on League issues. The governance framework includes permanent representation for student-athletes on each of the League’s five standing cabinets and a seat on the Horizon League Council.

The Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the 10 member institutions’ chief executive officers. Gary Miller, Chancellor of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, serves as Board Chair.

The Horizon League Council consists of the 10 member institutions’ athletic directors, chairpersons of the Senior Woman’s Administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives and a student-athlete.

Garrett Klassy, Director of Athletics at University of Illinois at Chicago, serves as Council chair. Roderick Perry, Director of Athletics at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, serves as Council vice-chair. Tonya McGowan, Senior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at University of Illinois at Chicago, serves as the Senior Woman Administrator chair. Chet Cooper of Youngstown State University serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives. Wright State track & field student-athlete Maria Heckman serves as the student-athlete representative.
