State 4-H Leaders’ Forum Have you ever attended the State 4-H Leaders’ Forum (SLF) over Veteran’s Day weekend? It’s a weekend for adult 4-H volunteers and a great way to meet other 4-H volunteers. Sign up for the sessions of your choice, hear some great speakers, and enjoy hanging by the beach at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, near Monterey Bay. It doesn’t get any better than this! For more information, go to: http://www.ca4h.org/Programs/Conferences/SLF/ Donations Needed to Support State 4-H Leaders’ Forum Each year a Silent Auction is held at the State 4-H Leaders’ Forum (SLF) to help cover the costs of the conference. The auction items vary from DVDs to Car Cleaning Kits to Coffee Baskets and Sewing Baskets and are all donated by 4-H members from each county. What might you be able to donate? Do you have any items you’ve been gifted that “just aren’t you”? Or items you’ve picked up because “it was such a great deal” but now have no use for them? Or do you have a business and can donate an item? Last year a simple gifted necklace was donated that was just not the owner’s style and it raised $19.00! Donations are needed by November 1 and are tax deductible as allowed by law. Deliver items to your Community Club Leader to take to the next meeting or drop them off at the Tulare County 4-H Office.

Announcing the New Highest California 4-H Youth Award! The Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the launch of the California 4-H Diamond Clover Award. The Diamond Clover is awarded to the highest achieving 4-H youth members through an application and essay process. All youth who achieve the qualifications are eligible for this award. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year and while a young person is between 17 and 19 years of age. Each quarter, applications are reviewed by the Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee and awards are given. Awardees are announced annually at the State Leadership Conference. Applications are available now for submission beginning July 1, 2012 at: http://www.ca4h.org/Administration/Advisory_Committees/IR/ Rationale: Most youth serving organizations have a highest honor—Boy Scouts have Eagle Scouts, Girl Scouts have the Gold Award, Camp Fire USA has the WoHeLo Award. While the 4-H State Ambassador Program is a very high honor, it is a working honor and is prohibitive to many who may be deserving of a highest youth award. State Record Book Judging An Addendum to the Record Book Manual with updated 2012 Cover Page, Judge’s Application, County Check Sheet and State Judging Process Overview will be posted to the State Website in mid-July. Members planning to submit a Record Book for State Competition should check the Website after July 15th for the most current information on procedures, requirements and due dates. The purpose of the monthly 4-H Community Club meeting

The 4-H youth development program is one of the few opportunities youth have to learn the important life skills of group decision-making and participating fully in an organization. The 4-H club and its monthly meetings allow youth to:

Learn to run a meeting in an orderly manner according to democratic principles;

Participate in committee work and learn the beginnings of leadership;

Observe and practice skills in being an officer and fulfilling duties with which they have been entrusted;

Learn about the many opportunities available to them as 4-H members.

exchange student this fall. Approximately 2,000 exchange students from over 50 countries, all of whom have undergone an extensive and competitive merit-based selection process, will spend the 2012-13 academic year in communities across the United States. Hosting an ECA international exchange student is an enriching experience for the entire family and allows you to have a real connection to the world without leaving home. If you are willing to open yourself to new experiences, to share your life with a fascinating teenager from a foreign land, and if you can provide a student with guidance, support, and a welcoming home, hosting may be just right for you. For more information, go to: http://exchanges.state.gov/host/index.html. 2013 Salute to Excellence 4-H Volunteer Awards It is time to start the selection process for the The National 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Award. This award recognizes 4-H volunteers who demonstrate exemplary service to 4-H, while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege. Additional information is available at: http://www.4-h.org/resource-library/grants-awards/opportunities/salute-to-excellence-awards/. The categories are as follows: 1. The Volunteer of the Year Award is for individuals who have served as 4-H volunteers for less than 10 years at the local, county, district or state level. 2. The Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Award is for individuals who have served 10 or more years at the local, county, district or state level. Mail completed nomination packet(s) to the State 4-H Office, Attn: Shannon Dogan, University of California, Davis, One Shields Ave., DANR Bldg., Davis, CA 95616. If you FED EX the packet please send it to the State 4-H Office, Attn: Shannon Dogan, DANR Building, 225 Hopkins Road, Davis, CA 95616. TIPS FOR 4-H PARENTS

Author: Peggy Gregory, University of California Cooperative Extension, Kings County 4-H Program.

Parents’ Important Role in the 4-H Club

You are important to your child’s success in 4-H.

As a parent, you are encouraged and expected to attend the monthly Community Club meetings. This investment of 1 to 2 hours a month is valuable to your child’s success and the success of the club.

Help your child understand their role as a club member in regard to voting, serving on committees and participating in club life.

While your attendance is not usually expected at project meetings, you are always welcome and may be asked to come from time to time when more adults are needed.

Please offer to help (at least in some small way) with special activities and events. The Community Club Leader (CCL) and project leaders are all volunteers – give them a hand, a thank you and a pat on the back.

CALIFORNIA 4-H FOUNDATION REVOLUTION OF RESPONSIBILITY

CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN

The Revolution of Responsibility 2013 marks the centennial for 4‐H in California, an important milestone for an organization that is deeply connected to communities throughout California. Core to the 4‐H experience is service learning, which takes the form of student‐designed, student‐led projects where participants learn leadership by leading, collaboration through collaborating, and the importance of civic engagement by actively seeking opportunities to make a difference in their communities. The Revolution of Responsibility will celebrate the power of youth taking action and will be the centerpiece of the Centennial Celebration with two key components: 1) an ambitious statewide service learning program, $1,000 for 1,000, raising funds to provide $1,000 each for 1,000 4‐H service learning projects statewide, and 2) the development of an Alumni Membership program connecting with an estimated one million past 4‐H participants living in California, engaging them as volunteers, donors, and advocates and building our capacity to sustain the organization statewide. The Revolution of Responsibility Program will have the potential to touch the lives of the more than 38,000 youth and 20,000 volunteers currently active in 4‐H clubs in 57 California counties. Under the guidance and mentorship of their adult leaders, 4‐H youth will identify a need in their community, develop a plan to address that need, find community partners who will support their work, and carry out their plan to achieve success. 4‐H staff will support volunteers with the resources necessary to implement their projects, encouraging them to broaden their impact through the cultivation of partnerships with 4‐H alumni, local businesses, and community organizations in support of their work. Projects will be implemented with a focus on three national program initiatives: Healthy Living, Science, and Citizenship. These programs are central to the health and vibrancy of our communities and provide 4‐H members with opportunities to lead the charge in addressing critical issues facing Californians today. The Revolution of Responsibility program will include a robust web presence through the development of an interactive website and the implementation of a social media strategy that will draw attention to the 1,000 civic engagement projects and the stories that emerge from youth, volunteers and alumni. All 1,000 projects will be documented by the youth participants through photographs and YouTube style videos and will be posted on a new website as they are completed. This will provide enhanced visibility for California 4‐H, highlighting the 100 years of experience, expertise and research that place 4‐H at the forefront of youth programming. The program will also underscore the value of 4‐H in the lives of current and past participants. We will work with

photographer Christopher Irion to present the “Faces of 4‐H,” capturing the diverse images and unique stories of our 4‐H community for inclusion on our website and related publications. Photographs will be taken at the California State Fair using Irion’s unique “photo booth” approach. This exciting component of the Revolution of Responsibility will also be featured on a grand scale in a temporary mural installation planned for the State Capitol grounds in Sacramento as a culmination and centerpiece of our Centennial Celebration festivities. TIMELINE Fall 2012: Project funding continues. Winter 2013: Formal Alumni Program launched. Spring 2013: Centennial Celebration activities begin. $2 million fundraising goal achieved. Spring 2014: Completion of all projects with culminating Centennial Celebration Event.
