Art Show for August: Dody Messerschmitt Dody (Dorothy) Messerschmitt turned to art late in life. After retiring from a successful career as a professor in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco, she decided to reinvent herself as an artist. In preparation she completed the “Certificate in Art Studio” at the University of California, Berkeley, Extension Program held both on campus and in San Francisco. e Extension Program allowed her to slowly complete the program in ten years, taking only one course each semester. She owes special thanks to the main instructors in the program, Larry Robinson, Pam Lanza, and Glen Hirsch. In addition, she frequently attends workshops at the Mendocino Art Center and the Scottsdale Artists School in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her husband, David, is a professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Dody’s watercolors often investigate contrasting textures found in nature such as the grittiness of beach sand compared to the smooth nacre found inside a sea shell or the rough pebbles of a barnyard compared to the smooth feathers of a mama duck. To this end she uses a variety of techniques including dropping table salt on wet paint, stretching plastic wrap over wet paint, and flicking paint with a toothbrush. e Faculty Club Campaign e Club needs your support as it prepares for the next century of service to the campus and its community.
