One of the main reasons why this rigour is needed is that it is very easy for things to go wrong. Barely a day passes without hearing or reading about some project failure or disaster which has the potential to harm people, the environment and, lest we forget, our reputations! In order to prevent such failures and disasters, it is deemed as good practice to put model-based systems engineering (MBSE) into place that describe our competencies and capabilities on the business – but is this enough? This presentation looks at the realities of implementing MBSE in terms of ‘people, process and tools’ and suggests that any single one of these is simply not enough. We need effective processes to demonstrate capability, but we also need appropriately competent people and sharp tools to realise these processes successfully. Prof Holt uses such diverse subjects as magic, Disney rodents and elaborate headwear to illustrate that any business endeavour requires people, process and tools to be successful. These points are tackled in a presentation that is intended to inform, entertain and provoke discussion on the issues of rigour, professionalism and confidence. This presentation has been previously provided for a number of organisations, including the Rolls Royce Global Conference, the AWE Process Forum Launch, various IET events and as part of Science and Engineering Education in Wales. ABOUT THE PRESENTER Prof Jon Holt is a leading figure in the world of systems engineering and gained his PhD from Swansea in 1994. Jon is the Global Head of Systems Engineering for Atego Systems and has been working in the field of systems modelling for the last 20 years. Jon is an international award- winning public speaker and author, and has published nine books on systems modelling and systems engineering. He is also a Fellow of both the IET and the BCS and a Professor of Systems Engineering at Cranfield University. When he is not engineering, Jon is an accomplished magician who has performed close-up magic at the London Palladium. Jon is also a regular performer at the IET Science Cabaret, where he blends mind- reading and escapology to promote engineering and science as a profession.
