DebutingFreshman guard Antonio Rizzuto finally made his season debut against Mon-mouth, scoring 13 points on 3-6 shooting from the floor in 22 minutes off the bench. All three of his baskets were made from behind the arc. Rizzuto, who had been sidelined with injuries through the first eight games of the season, is expected to alleviate some pressure to the Great Dane backcourt and provide an additioanl scoring threat to complement Ahmad Clark and Cameron Healy.
Starting FastJunior guard Ahmad Clark scored UAlbany’s first eight points against Monmouth and finished with 20 for the first half, including shooting 10-10 from the free throw line. Clark ended the game with 29, just one point off his career-high.
SlidingSince defeating Oneonta at home on November 19, the Great Danes have lost their last four in a row, to Holy Cross, UW-Milwaukee, LIU Brooklyn, and Dart-mouth. It’s the team’s longest losing streak since dropping five straight during the 2010-11 season. That year also featured a four-game losing streak earlier in the season.
Rookie of the WeekRedshirt-freshman Cameron Healy was named America East Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career on December 3, following his efforts in the Great Danes’ two games in Northern Ireland. Healy averaged 23.0 points over the two games, including a career-high 24 against Dartmouth, while hitting four three-pointers in each.
Making it RainRedshirt-freshman Cameron Healy hit four three-pointers against Dartmouth in the Great Danes’ final game in the Belfast Classic. It was Healy’s fourth-straight game in which he has made four three-pointers. Healy has made 28 threes in eight games this season, at a rate of .431, which ranks third in the America East.
Belfast IIThe Great Danes, playing in the Sampson Bracket, fell in both of their games in the Belfast Classic. First, against LIU Brooklyn, the Danes trailed by 12 in the first half before storming back to take a four-point lead at halftime. Ultimately, 26 turnovers did UAlbany in, including on the final possession of the game, costing the Danes an 80-77 defeat. In the consolation game, UAlbany fell behind early to Dartmouth, trailing by as many as 28 in the first half before closing the half on a 16-0 run. Dartmouth lit up the scoreboard from behind the arc, raining down 11 threes in the first half and 17 for the game, taking the victory 91-77. For his efforts, averaging 23.5 points, Ahmad Clark was named to the All-Tournament team.
BelfastAfter playing three games in four days, including back-to-back home games, the Great Danes, having gone 2-1 during that stretch, kick off the highlight of the non-conference schedule, the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic with one game in Milwaukee against UW-Milwaukee before heading overseas to play LIU Brooklyn and either Dartmouth or Marist a week later.
ResiliancyTrailing by 17 in the second half to Holy Cross, the Great Danes’ defense locked down, holding the Crusaders scoreless for the final 6:35 of regulation, forcing overtime with a 13-0 run to end the half.
30Against Canisius, junior guard Ahmad Clark scored a game-high 30 points, recording the 42nd 30-point game in program history. The total is tied for 31st in program history among individual performances with seven other players, and, at this early point in the season, is the highest ndividual point total for a player in the America East.
Charity StripeIn the season opener at Iona, the Great Danes shot 15-16 from the line, for a 93.8% coversion rate. Through their one game of the season, UAlbany led the NCAA in the category.
Stepping UpAs the most experienced player on the roster, having been a regular starter for the last two years, winning America East All-Defensive Team honors each of the last two season, Devonte Campbell has stepped headfirst into and fully embraced

2018-19 UALBANY MEN’S BASKETBALLQUICK FACTS
2018-19 America East Conference StandingsThrough 12/9
PreseasonAfter finishing fourth in the regular season in 2017-18, the Great Danes were picked to finish fourth in the 2018-19 America East Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Last year’s regular-season champion Vermont was picked first for the second-straight year, while America East Tournament champion UMBC, which became the first 16-seed to defeat a one-seed in the men’s NCAA Tournamnet by knocking off top-overall seed Virginia 74-54, was picked third.
Empire StateThe 2018-19 schedule for the Great Danes features 31 regular-season games. Of those 31, 10 will feature opponents from New York State, with the potential for an 11th, should UAlbany draw Marist in their final game of the Belfast Classic. Last seaosn, UAlbany went 9-2 against teams from New York.
Road WarriorsUAlbany will play just six of its 15 non-conference games at SEFCU Arena this season. The remaining nine will be played away from home. The highlight of the non-conference schedule is a week-long trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland for the final phase of the Belfast Classic. UAlbany’s participation in the Classic begins with a visit to UW-Milwaukee on November 23, followed by the flight overseas for a game on November 29 against LIU Brooklyn, and one final game on Novem-ber 30 against either Dartmouth or Marist.
Searching for ProductionWith such dramatic personnell changes since last season, the Great Danes will have to find new sources of production to win games this year. Devonte Campell is one of three players returning who saw the floor last seaosn, and the only returning starter from last year’s squad. Collectively, the team returns 14.4% of its scoring production from last season, amounting to 10.7 points per game.
Aussie PipelineContinuing the tradtion of Australian players in the program, the men’s 2018-19 roster features three Australian players in Brent Hank, Cameron Healy, and Adam Lulka. Each is expected to contribute significantly this season, if not win starting roles.
Fresh FacesDue to heavy losses from graduation and transferring players, the UAlbany men’s basektball team will feature nine newcomers on its 15-player roster this season. Further, three of the six returners, Brent Hank, Cameron Healy, and Adam Lulka, redshirted their freshman season last year.
NBLxNBAOne of the preseason team bonding experiences the Great Danes had was a trip to Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center to attend the Philadelphia 76ers preseason exhibition game against Melbourne United. United’s squad featured UAlbany alumnus Peter Hooley, who played for Coach Brown from 2011-16. Further, the Sixers’ Markelle Fultz, top overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, attended DeMatha Catholic with Ahmad Clark, and the two are close friends.

LAST TIME OUT - vs. MonmouthScore: UAlbany 82, Monmouth 63
Location: SEFCU Arena in Albany, N.Y.
Records: UAlbany (3-6); Monmouth (0-11)
Short Story: UAlbany snaps its four-game losing streak with a double-digit victory at home over Monmouth, 82-63.
Coach Brown: “Tonight was a tale of two halves. I thought in the first half Monmouth came out more anxious. They’re a physical team, and at halftime there was one glaring stat, they led in rebounding 20-8. I thought in the last 20 minutes we did a great job of playing with toughness and matching their intensity on the glass. I thought we got into a nice flow offensively. What we have with Antonio, Ahmad, and Cameron on the floor, it really spaced the floor out. I thought that our spacing was really good in the second half and we got some really good looks. Our defense and our toughness was much better in the second half. We really competed in the second half, we were more focused, and we were tougher. It was good to see, especially when we had four freshmen on the floor at the same time.”

Quotes
Head Coach Will Brown: “A tale of two halves – same thing at BU last Monday. This team can score from every position on the floor, and each night it could be a different guy. For us, what we have to do is defend and rebound, and we cannot turn the ball over. Our guys did a good job against a good team that is well coached, and it is nice to be 3-0.”
Joe Cremo: “I am still getting the same looks. Maybe I’m more aggressive in the paint now. My teammates keep giving me good looks, and my confidence is still high. I just have to knock them down, and tonight I did.”

2018-19 UALBANY MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES
WILL BROWN - 18TH SEASON AT UALBANY
Will Brown begins his 18th season overall as the University at Albany’s men’s basketball head coach, after spending one season in an interim capacity. Brown, the longest tenured coach in the America East Conference, has led the program to five conference championships, five NCAA Tournament appearances, two CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament appearances, one CBI Postseason appearance and an unparalleled success in the classroom.
The Great Danes won 20+ games for the fourth straight year in 2017-18, going 22-10 overall thanks in part to a strong non-conference performance that saw the team peak at #4 in the national Mid-Major poll. Two players, Joe Cremo and David Nichols became the 10th and 11th 1,000-point scorers in program history. The Danes won six straight games to open the season, matching the program’s second-best start in history from the 1985-86 season. Brown earned his 275th career victory at UAlbany with a 70-62 win against UMass Lowell on January 18, 2018.
Brown earned the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament win in 2013-14 when the Purple & Gold took down Mount St. Mary’s in the First Four 71-64 in Dayton, Ohio. He led UAlbany to its second-straight America East title in 2013-14, as the
No. 4 seed. The Great Danes repeated their feat as the lowest seed to ever win the tournament, once again knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds and taking the title on the road.
The 2012-13 Great Danes arguably ended their season as their most successful in league history with a 24-11 record, a NCAA Tournament Second Round appearance and won the America East Conference Tournament Championship. Following his third conference tournament championship, he became the fourth America East Conference head coach with at least three conference tournament titles. The 24 wins is a program-best for most wins in a season at UAlbany in Division I. The Great Danes set a record for most non-conference wins in school history with 12.
Brown guided the Great Danes to their second straight America East Conference championship after defeating top-seed Vermont in the 2007 tournament final. The Great Danes, who earned an automatic NCAA berth, were seeded No. 13 against Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season winner Virginia. Brown’s team totaled 20 victories during the regular season for the first time at the Division I level. UAlbany tied the second-highest single-season win total (23) in school history and posted consecutive 20-win campaigns for the first time in 17 years. Jamar Wilson made his second appearance on the Associated Press All-America squad.
Brown led the Great Danes to their first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth in 2005-06 after winning both the America East Conference tournament and regular-season titles. UAlbany set the pro6gram’s Division I record for single-season victories with a 21-11 record and produced its highest win total since 1993-94. His squad posted UAlbany’s first postseason triumph in 11 years with three wins in America East tournament play. The Great Danes, who also established their top conference mark with 13 victories in the regular season, went on to put up a monumental fight against second-ranked Connecticut in a memorable NCAA first-round battle. Brown was named the New York State Coach of the Year.
Brown was appointed as UAlbany’s head coach on March 13, 2002, and has worked on the collegiate level since 1995. He became the 15th head coach in the history of the program. At age 40, Brown is still one of the youngest Division I head coaches in the nation.
Coach Brown and his wife, Jamie, work closely with many charitable organizations in the Capital District and surrounding areas. Jamie currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Organization of the Capital Region. She also serves as the Associate Board of Directors for St. Peter’s Hospital and co-chairs Coaches vs. Cancer to benefit the American Cancer Society. The Browns are also involved with the upstate Northeastern New York chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
Brown, who joined the UAlbany staff as an assistant in Sept. 2001, was promoted to interim head coach on Dec. 20 of that year, and guided the Great Danes to a 7-13 record over the last 20 games. UAlbany was among the conference leaders in scoring defense. He coached the team to several impressive victories, including a win over Vermont, the America East Conference’s regular-season champion.
Brown previously served as the head coach at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y., from 1998-2001. He led the Generals to a 90-10 record over a three-year period with two regional and two district titles. Sullivan County C.C. posted a 30-2 record and reached the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship game in 2000-01. Brown’s first SCCC squad appeared in the NJCAA “Final Four” and finished 32-3 overall. The Generals were ranked second nationally in scoring at 92.9 points per game, and ninth in team defense with a 67.1 average.
Previous to his appointment at Sullivan County C.C., Brown spent three years at The College of Saint Rose as an assistant coach on Brian Beaury’s staff. The Golden Knights made two NCAA Division II “Elite Eight” appearances in that span, and captured three New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) championships and two Northeast Regional crowns. Saint Rose compiled an 88-13 record from 1995-98.
As a collegiate player, Brown was a two-time NYCAC all-star and three-year starter at Dowling College, an NCAA Division II program on Long Island. He is the only player in school history to combine for more than 1,000 points and 500 assists. Brown completed his career as Dowling’s all-time leader in assists (591), three-point field goals (181) and free throw percentage (.859). He also played second singles on the school’s tennis team.
A native of Miller Place, N.Y., Brown earned first-team Class B all-state recognition as a high school senior, when he averaged more than 35 points per game. He was chosen All-Long Island and was a three-time All-Suffolk County selection. In May 2010, Brown was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame.
Brown resides in Latham with his wife, Jamie, and their two sons, Jackson and Landon. Brown has a master’s degree in management and a B.A. in marketing from Dowling College. His father, William, Jr., has served as director of athletics at Miller Place High School, where he previously was head basketball coach for 17 years.
