SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES2014 Record: 6-5, 2-5 CAA2014 CAA Preseason Poll: 10th/12Head Coach: Greg Gattuso (1st season at UAlbany/13th overall as head coach) (6-5/103-37)
THE COACH: Greg Gattuso, a former head coach at Duquesne Univer-sity and assistant head coach at both Pittsburgh and Maryland, was named the University at Albany’s head football coach in December of 2013. Gattuso became the second football coach in the program’s 41-varsity season history, taking the reins from program architect Bob Ford. Throughout both his playing and coaching career, Gattuso boasts a long history of exceptional success. As a defensive lineman at Penn State, Gattuso helped lead the Nittany Lions to a national title in 1982. In his first collegiate head-coaching role, Gattuso piloted Duquesne to a 97-32 record during his 12-season tenure, and while making three bowl appearances at Pittsburgh, he turned the defen-sive line into one of the best in the nation as an assistant head coach and hauled in a top-10 recruiting class. Gattuso comes to UAlbany after spending three seasons as a member Randy Edsall’s Universi-ty of Maryland coaching staff. There, he led the defensive line that ranked among the top in the ACC and was promoted to the position of assistant head coach in February 2012.
OVERVIEW: UAlbany enters Saturday’s clash with a 6-5 overall record and 2-5 mark in the CAA, coming off straight losses to No. 2 New Hampshire (49-24), Delaware (31-28), and No. 6 Villanova (43-31). After starting the season 4-0, the Great Danes bounced back after consecutive losses to James Madison (31-28) and Richmond (41-28) with a key road win over Maine (20-7) and home triumph over Colgate (24-17). UAlbany’s first four wins came against Holy Cross (14-13) in week one, Central Connecticut State (19-0) in week two, and after a bye week, the Danes recorded the program’s first CAA win – a 37-20 victory over Rhode Island -- in week four. UAlbany followed that up with a 42-7 romp over Columbia of the Ivy League before JMU played spoilers. Facing two top-10 teams and two former national champions in the last three weeks, the Great Danes look to end the season on a high note with a win over Stony Brook.
A UALBANY WIN WOULD…- Improve UAlbany’s record to 7-5 overall and 3-5 in conference.- Give UAlbany its 12th winning season in Division I (16 years).- Give UAlbany its 27th winning season in varsity history (42 years).- Improve Coach Gattuso’s career record to 104-37.- Improve the senior class’ five-year record to 31-27.
A UALBANY LOSS WOULD…- Drop UAlbany’s record to 6-6 overall and 2-6 in conference.- End UAlbany’s season with a .500 record for the first time in Division I (16 years).- End UAlbany’s season with a .500 record for the sixth time in varsity history (42 years).- Drop Coach Gattuso’s career record to 103-38.- Drop the senior class’ five-year record to 30-28.
LAST TIME OUT: UAlbany fifth-year seniors Will Fiacchi and Omar Osbourne rewrote the Great Danes’ record book last Saturday night against No. 6 Villanova, as UAlbany fell to the Wildcats 48-31 at Villanova Stadium. The loss dropped the Danes to 6-5 on the season and 2-5 in the CAA, while Villanova improved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Below are a few headlines from that game…
FIACCHI BREAKS 7,000 PASSING YARDSRedshirt senior quarterback Will Fiacchi tied UAlbany’s all-time career passing record, as he logged 331 passing yards and two touchdowns against the Wildcats. Completing 21-of-28 attempts in the clash, Fiacchi now has 7,015 career passing yards which matches all-time leader Joe Savino who played from 1994-98. In addition, with 2,501 passing yards this fall, the Marcellus, N.Y. native needs just 48 more passing yards to break UAlbany’s single-season record (2,548). Fiacchi has started every game under center for the past three sea-sons (2012-14) -- 34 consecutive games.
OSBOURNE ECLIPSES 3,000 CAREER/1,000 SEASON RUSHING YARDSIn addition, redshirt senior running back Omar Osbourne made his mark in the archives Saturday, surpassing 3,000 career rushing yards and 1,000 rushing yards this season. With 18 carries, Osbourne ac-crued 64 rushing yards and two touchdowns, jumping to third-place all-time with 3,062 career yards and 1,045 yards this fall. He marks the fourth UAlbany player in history to rush for over 1,000 yards in consec-utive seasons, joining Gary Jones (2002-03), David McCarty (2007-08),

PARKER HAS CAREER GAMETotaling 408 yards of offense as a team, Fiacchi connected with senior tight end Brian Parker for a pair of touchdowns, as the Henrietta, N.Y. native recorded a career-high 103 receiving yards on five receptions. It marked Parker’s first 100+ receiving game and first two-touchdown performance. He now has five touchdowns this fall and nine in his career. His performance at Villanova also put him over the 1,000-career receiving yards mark (1,006) and moved him to 13th all-time with 74 career receptions.
KING NEARS RECEIVING MILESTONESRedshirt senior Cole King also had five catches, totaling 92 receiving yards against Villano-va. King is 98 yards and three touchdown catches away from tying both the all-time receiv-ing yards record (2,243 – Dan Gmelin) and touchdown reception record (20 – Chris Phillis). King enters the final game of his career with 2,145 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. With 143 career receptions, he is also four catches away from moving into second-place all-time behind Ryan Kirchner’s 172.
ROOKIE WIDE RECEIVERS CONTINUE SOLID YEARTrue freshman Josh Gontarek and redshirt freshman Brad Harris each logged four recep-tions for 57 and 48 yards, respectively, against Villanova. Gontarek is having the best rookie year in program history as he has been named CAA Rookie of the Week four times and is on the Jerry Rice Award Watch List and CFPA Freshman Performer of the Year Watch List. Leading the team with eight touchdown receptions in his rookie campaign, Gontarek is two away from tying UAlbany’s single-season receiving touchdowns record. The record is 10 held by Dan Gmelin (1997) and Ryan Kirchner (2011). In addition, Brad Harris has been a steady option for the Danes in his first year competing. Harris has accrued 23 receptions for 415 yards and two touchdowns this fall.
NICASTRO, DORSEY BREAK 100 TACKLESDefensively against Villanova, redshirt sophomore Michael Nicastro led the squad with 10 tackles, including seven solo, as well as a 40-yard fumble recovery. Senior T.J. Idowu fol-lowed with nine tackles (8 solo), while redshirt senior Christian Dorsey had eight (4 solo). This season, Nicastro leads the team with 110 tackles, marking the highest single-season output since 2005 (Colin Disch). Dorsey has also broken 100 with 105, totaling a team-best 226 in his career. With his performance at Villanova, Idowu is also over 200 in his career with 202.
LAST TIME AT HOME: With 33 seconds remaining on Military Appreciation Day at Bob Ford Field Saturday, redshirt senior quarterback Will Fiacchi connected a 19-yard touch-down pass to true freshman Josh Gontarek, putting the Great Danes within three points, 31-28, in the final minute of play against Delaware. UAlbany’s onside kick attempt ap-peared to be successful as redshirt sophomore Michael Nicastro recovered, but an illegal blocking penalty negated the play and the visiting Blue Hens held on for the win. Fiacchi led the team offensively with 335 passing yards and career-high four touchdowns, complet-ing 22-of-35 attempts with no interceptions. Gontarek served as his primary receiver, as he accrued a career-high 118 receiving yards and two touchdowns on six catches. De-fensively, redshirt senior linebacker Christian Dorsey led the squad with a career-high 18 tackles (3 solo), followed by senior T.J. Idowu’s 13 (7 solo) and freshman Jamal Robinson’s career-best 10 (5 solo).

SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES2014 Record: 5-6, 4-3 CAA2014 CAA Preseason Poll: 9th/12Head Coach: Chuck Priore (9th season at Stony Brook/15th overall as head coach) (57-46/96-55)
THE COACH: A branch off of Bob Ford’s coaching tree, Chuck Priore is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Stony Brook football program. Priore played for Coach Ford from 1979-1981, and currently ranks 12th in UAlbany’s archives for rushing yards (1,881). He started his coaching career as an assistant for Ford from 1983-1985. From there, he had stints at Union, Penn, and Trinity, before landing at Stony Brook. Joining the CAA from the Big South in 2013, Stony Brook went 5-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play in the same inaugural year as UAlbany. In 2012, for a second straight season, the Seawolves host-ed and won a playoff game and advanced to the second round of the Division I Football Championship. The 2012 season featured a number of milestones - Stony Brook beat Army, 23-3, for its first win over an FBS program; Miguel Maysonet finished as the runner-up for the Wal-ter Payton Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding player, was named to a program-record seven All-America Teams and became the first SBU football player to be invited to the NFL Combine. For his efforts, Priore was named AFCA Regional Co-Coach of the year, and earned a contract extension through the 2017 season. OVERVIEW: Stony Brook boasts one of the top defenses in the coun-try, ranking fourth in FCS for scoring defense (14.3) and total defense (266.5), as well as second for red zone defense (.600) and team tackles for a loss (9.9). The Seawolves enter Saturday’s clash off a 35-14 win over Rhode Island after dropping back-to-back games to New Hamp-shire (28-20) and James Madison (27-24). Offensively, Stony Brook is led by sophomore running back Stacey Bedell’s 994 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, carrying the ball 184 times this season. Junior quarterback Conor Bednarski has also accounted for nine touchdowns in the air, accruing 1,254 passing yards (103-194-6), while receiv-ers Adrian Coxson and Will Tye have each caught five TD passes. Defensively, Christian Ricard leads the team with 86 tackles (51 solo), including 20.5 for a loss of 85 yards and 8.5 sacks, setting opponents back 57 yards.
DANES IN THE TOP-25UAlbany has been ranked in The Sports Network Media Poll a pro-gram-record four weeks this season. The Danes entered the rankings at No. 24 after starting the season 3-0. Improving to 4-0 with a win over Columbia, UAlbany moved up to 23rd, but dropped out of the poll for three weeks after losses to James Madison and No. 20 Richmond. Overcoming Maine on the road, the Great Danes reappeared in the rankings at No. 25 and then moved up to 23rd again after topping Colgate. However, UAlbany’s loss to No. 2 New Hampshire on Nov. 1 removed the Danes from Top-25, while they are still receiving votes in the media poll. New Hampshire marked UAlbany’s highest ranked opponent since the Danes faced No. 2 Montana in 2007 (Montana 35, UAlbany 14). The highest ranked foe that UAlbany has ever beaten was No. 11 Delaware in 2006 (17-10).
GONTAREK, KING TARGET TOUCHDOWN RECORDSLeading the team with eight touchdown receptions in his rookie campaign, true freshman wide receiver Josh Gontarek is two away from tying UAlbany’s single-season receiving touchdowns record. STONY BROOK, N.Y. – While the score read 24-3 in favor of the hosting Stony Brook Sea-wolves Saturday evening at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, the smiles and greetings of University at Albany friends, family, former players, and supporters that surrounded Head Coach Bob Ford after the final horn sounded heavily out-weighed the outcome.
The legacy of Coach Ford’s 44-seasons at UAlbany was the concentration of the night, and former players ranging from his very first season at the helm to recent graduates showered Coach with hugs and well wishes. Ford, who started his coaching career at the age of 26 as the youngest head coach in the country, ended his tenure Saturday at the age of 76 – the oldest in the coun-try -- with 265 career wins, ranking first among active NCAA Division I coaches and fourth on the all-time FCS chart.
“I had an opportunity to deal with a lot of young people at a formidable time in their lives and I had an oppor-tunity to handle a lot of great coaches and I’m proud of what they achieved.
“I want to congratulate Chuck Priore and Stony Brook. I thought they played well. Chuck was a captain and coach with us for a period of time. He is a classy coach and I appreciate everything he contributed to our pro-gram through the years.
Completing 16-of-35 passes, junior quarterback Will Fiacchi broke UAlbany’s single-season completions re-cord with 207 this season, surpassing Dan DiLella’s 196. Fiacchi finished with 136 passing yards on the night, hitting top receiver senior Kevin Chillis seven times for a total of 45 yards.
On the ground, junior Omar Osbourne carried the ball 15 times, netting 57 rushing yards.
Defensively, TJ Idowu led the team with 14 tackles, in-cluding 10 solo, while Christian Dorsey and Alex Helmer followed closely with 10 and nine tackles, respectively.
Punting six times, Jonathan Martin averaged 42.5 yards per punt, dropping four inside the 20.
On their first drive of the game, the hosting Seawolves (5-6, 3-5 CAA) quickly set the tone, using 11 plays to cover 78-yards. Gambling early on, the Seawolves converted a 4th-and-6 play on the 26-yard line, as Lyle Negron connected an 18-yard pass to Malcolm Eugene.
Two plays later, Negron capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown rush, and with the extra point, Stony Brook led 7-0 with 9:17 remaining in the first quarter.
Forcing the Great Danes to punt, the Seawolves struck again, as Tyler Fredericks finished Stony Brooks’ 10-play, 91-yard drive with a two-yard push into the end zone with 3:14 left in the opening quarter.
While UAlbany worked its way to midfield on the next drive, the Great Danes punted away. Martin’s 34-yard punt pinned the Seawolves at the nine. However, Stony Brook used just one play to get in the end zone, as Negron tossed a short pass to Eugene who turned it into a 91-yard touchdown connection, eluding tackles down the length of the UAlbany sideline. After the kick, the Seawolves held a 21-0 advantage with 14:32 remaining in the second quarter.
Plagued by penalties, neither squad was able to get anything going offensively for the remainder of the half. In the first half alone, the Great Danes were called for six penalties for 42-yards, while also losing freshman line-backer Marcel Ngachie for the rest of the game due to a roughing the passer penalty that resulted in ejection.
“I think if we had started the game at halftime we would have been a little better off,” said Ford. “We just struggled in the early going of the ball game. We got unraveled in the second half and started to play a little bit better.”
Out of the break, the Great Danes recorded their first points of the game, driving 57-yards on 10 plays. With a shot at the end zone, Fiacchi found Cole King in the back corner, but he was pushed out, forcing UAlbany to settle for a field goal. Tom O’Riordan’s 31-yard kick sailed through the uprights, making the score 21-3 with 10:27 remaining in the third quarter.
Both teams remained scoreless until Stony Brook made a 38-yard field goal with 11:09 remaining in the fourth, giving the Seawolves the final 24-3 advantage.
For Stony Brook, Negron completed 15-of-26 passes, totaling 262 passing yards. Running back James Kenner carried the ball 35 times, accruing 151 rushing yards, as the Seawolves totaled 456 yards of offense in the game.
UAlbany finished the 2013 season with a 1-11 overall mark and 0-8 record in the CAA.
Last time vs. Stony Brook...STONY BROOK 24, UALBANY 3
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Safety Dominick Reyes intercepted a tipped pass in the back of the end zone with 47.4 seconds remaining, as Stony Brook held off UAlbany, 31-28, in the first round of the NCAA Division I FCS Play-offs on Saturday, Nov. 26 at LaValle Stadium. UAlbany (8-4) drove 15 plays from its
own 45-yard line in the late stages of the fourth quarter. Dan Di Lella, a senior quarterback, found Nick Hutcherson on fourth-and-11 to keep the march moving. He later threw third-down completions to tailback Andrew Smith and fullback Justin Peterson. But on second-and-goal from the Stony Brook three-yard line, Di Lella rolled to his right and threw for tight end Brian Parker in the back of the end zone. Cornerback Donald Porter tipped the high pass and Reyes came down with the ball inside the end line. “This something that I will have to live with the rest of my life,” said Di Lella, who went 24-of-43 through the air for 223 yards. “I should have thrown the ball into the stands and let (Drew) Smith run in for a touchdown on the next play. We used the pass to set up the run the entire day.” Stony Brook (9-3) rallied from a 28-10 deficit in the third quarter to go ahead. Brock Jackolski, a first-team all-league running back who ran for 103 yards and two scores, reached paydirt on a six-yard dash over the right side. After Di Lella threw the first of two interceptions, the Seawolves struck quickly. Quarterback Kyle Essington, using a pump fake, found Jackolski all alone on the right sideline to connect on a 55-yard scoring play. The Seawolves, who won the Big South Confer-ence championship to earn their NCAA berth and are No. 22 nationally, started quickly on their next series. Essington, who completed 12 of 24 attempts for 258 yards, found Kevin Norrell for 38 yards to start the sequence. After Essington threw a 17-yard completion to Jordan Gush, Jackolski rumbled over right tackle on an 11-yard touchdown runn for a 31-28 lead with 12:40 remaining. “The momentum swung back and forth through-out the game,” said UAlbany coach Bob Ford, who
suffered a knee injury late in the second quarter when he took a hit on the sideline. “We had great difficulty in pounding the ball and give Stony Brook credit for stopping the run. In these type of situa-tions, you have to things correct all the time and we failed to cash in.” In the first half, UAlbany’s defense stiffened to thwart a pair of Stony Brook scoring threats. The Great Danes stopped running back Miguel Maysonet on fourth-and-one inside the Great Danes’ 10-yard line. The Seawolves had another series end when Wesley Skiffington’s 48-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright. The Great Danes came back with two scores, one by the offense and one on special teams, to take a 14-0 lead. A flea-flicker for 25 yards jump-started a 10-play march. Di Lella kept the drive alive with a third-down completion and Smith jumped over right guard on a one-yard touchdown run. Defensive end Dean Mercuris blocked Luke Allen’s punt attempt with his left hand and Parker raced 21 yards for a touchdown with the loose ball on second play of the second quarter. The Seawolves regrouped with 10 straight points. Skiffington ended an 11-play drive with a 39-yard field goal. Stony Brook then worked its way from midfield for a touchdown. Jackolski’s 11-yard run and a facemask penalty aided the sequence. Essington rolled right and hit Matt Brevi with an 11-yard scoring pass. The Great Danes took a 21-10 lead to the intermission by moving the length of the field in 39.4 seconds. Di Lella fired a 44-yard strike to wide receiver Cole King, who carried two defenders across the goal line for the touchdown. UAlbany went 75 yards in four plays with the second-half kickoff to build a 28-10 advantage. The Northeast Conference co-champions started the drive with a 20-yard run by tailback Dillon Romain. Following a first-down catch by Ryan Kirchner to the SBU 43, Smith, a junior tailback, took a pitch off a reverse and hooked up with Kirchner on a 43-yard touchdown pass. Kirchner caught 12 passes for 143 yards.

Greg Gattuso, a former head coach at Duquesne University and assistant head coach at both Pittsburgh and Maryland, was named the University at Albany’s head football coach in December of 2013. The 51-year-old Gattuso be-came the second football coach in the program’s 41-varsity season history, taking the reins from program architect Bob Ford.
Throughout both his playing and coaching career, Gattuso boasts a long history of excep-tional success. As a defensive lineman at Penn State, Gattuso helped lead the Nittany Lions to a national title in 1982. In his first collegiate head-coaching role, Gattuso piloted Duquesne to a 97-32 record during his 12-season tenure, and while making three bowl appearances at Pittsburgh, he turned the defensive line into one
of the best in the nation as an assistant head coach and hauled in a top-10 recruiting class.Gattuso comes to UAlbany after spending three seasons as a member Randy Edsall’s
University of Maryland coaching staff. There, he led the defensive line that ranked among the top in the ACC and was promoted to the position of assistant head coach in February 2012.
During his tenure with the Terrapins, Gattuso developed current New England Patriot Joe Vellano into an NFL-ready defensive lineman, as Vellano earned All-America and All-ACC honors. In addition, Gattuso tutored All-ACC defensive lineman A.J. Francis, who signed with the Miami Dolphins at the conclusion of his collegiate career.
Prior to Maryland, Gattuso spent six seasons at Pittsburgh (2005-10) where he turned the Panthers’ defensive line into one of the team’s major strengths. The line was one of the top sack producers in the nation, as Brandon Lindsey (10.0) and Jabaal Sheard (9.0) both ranked in the top 20 nationally in sacks during the 2010 regular season and Pittsburgh led the nation in that category in 2009 (3.6 per game). Gattuso developed three Big East Defensive Player of the Year winners, as Sheard received the honor in 2010, and defensive linemen Greg Romeus and Mick Williams shared the award in 2009.
Gattuso initially joined the Pitt staff as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2005. In his first season, he helped the Panthers sign a recruiting class rated 10th in the nation
THE GATTUSO FILE
PERSONAL
Date of Birth ............................May 18, 1962
by Scout.com, 16th by ESPN.com and 21st by Rivals.com. He began coaching the defensive line in 2006 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2008. Scout.com named Gattuso the Big East Recruiter of the Year in 2007. During his tenure, The Panthers logged a 26-12 overall record, a 15-6 mark in the Big East, and ap-peared in three bowl games.
Before Pitt, Gattuso had a successful 12-year stint (1993-2004) as head coach at Duquesne University where he built the Dukes into one of the most elite I-AA football programs in the nation. The winningest coach in school history, the Dukes went 97-32 (.752) under his direction, won eight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles, made five bowl appearances, and captured the 2003 Mid-Major Division I-AA national championship.
The Western Pennsylvania native was twice named the national Mid-Major I-AA Coach of the Year and was a seven-time MAAC Coach of the Year. The Dukes dominated the conference during his tenure, going 66-7 (.904) in league play, in-cluding a 33-game winning streak.
Gattuso was an assistant coach at Duquesne in 1992 before taking over the head coaching post the following year.
From 1989-1991, he served as head coach at his high school alma mater, Seton-LaSalle. Taking over a team that went 6-34 during the four seasons prior to his arrival, Gattuso led the Rebels to a 28-10-1 mark (.731), including three WPIAL playoff berths, a WPIAL championship and Parkway Conference title.
During his playing career, Gattuso was named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Class AA Player of the Year his senior season at Seton-LaSalle and was a two-time All-East defensive lineman at Penn State. He was a member of the Lions’ 1982 na-tional title team and graduated in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in administration and criminal justice.
Gattuso and his wife Colleen have two daughters, Jacqueline (26) and Kaitlin (21).
Entering his first season in 2014, Gattuso takes over a program that has only known one other head coach – Bob Ford. Ford started a club team in 1970 and led the Great Danes through all three NCAA Divisions. Ford announced in August that the 2013 season would be his last after 44 seasons at the helm.
Still transitioning to the 63-scholarship level, Gattuso inherits a UAlbany squad that went 1-11 overall in 2013 in their first season in the CAA.
