    Unique Aspects of the University

    General Academic YearThe academic year consists of two normal semesters and a special semester.

    Each of the semesters is divided into two blocks by a 1-week mid-semester break.

    Requirements

    ▪ Enrolled as a degree student in home

    university;

    ▪ Have completed at least one academic year

    of study in home university;

    ▪ Nominated by home university (an official

    coordinator’s email address from the home

    university is required);

    ▪ Have good academic standing with CGPA not

    less than 3.0 or equivalent;

    ▪ Have good English proficiency in speaking and

    writing (English requirement for courses in

    Faculty of Business & Accountancy and Faculty

    of Law: IELTS (academic) Band 6, TOEFL iBT 80).

    *Faculty of Business & Accountancy is considerably

    competitive. Students applying for courses at this faculty

    must possess good academic performance.

    Inbound students can enrol in not more than 20 credit

    hours per semester subject to availability of courses and

    Academy/Faculty/Centre approval. Maximum period of

    exchange or inbound mobility is 2 semesters or 12 months.

    Nominations procedure

    Nomination must be from the Mobility Coordinator of

    home university. Nomination will be done through an

    online nomination form.

    Application from agents are not accepted and will not be

    entertained.

    Medium of instruction

    ▪ Science-based: 90% English

    ▪ Social science-based: 80% courses taught in English,

    20% in Malay Language or other foreign language*

    *Academy of Malay Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences

    (except English subject), Academy of Islamic Studies

    Credit Transfer SystemTransfer of credit is entirely up to the home university. UM

    will provide academic transcript to facilitate the process.

    Postgraduate

    exchange/visiting students

    Postgraduate students can be accepted as

    mobility students but are subject to:

    ▪ agreement signed between institutions; and

    ▪ term and conditions.

    Application Procedures

    Fees & Cost of Living

    Administration fee MYR 630 (approx. USD 150) per semester

    Tuition Fee

    Students from Partner University

    Students are entitled to a tuition fee waiver (only

    applicable to the number of students stipulated in the

    Student Exchange Programme Agreement) and

    reciprocal balance.

    Students from Non-partner University or Independent

    Student

    Students will be charged for MYR 4200 (approx. USD 1000)

    per semester.

    Note: Students are allowed to register for a minimum of 9

    credits up to a maximum of 20 credits per semester

    Accommodation

    On-campus Residential College (without meal)

    ▪ ± MYR 2500 (approx. USD 600) per semester

    ▪ Twin-sharing bedroom

    ▪ Furnished with beds, wardrobes, study tables & chairs,

    bookshelves

    ▪ Fan

    ▪ Common bathroom & toilet

    Off-campus Private Residential

    The costs differ from various types of room and residence

    which can range between MYR 1500/month to MYR

    3300/month (approx. USD 360/month to USD 800/month)

    Miscellaneous fees

    ▪ Visa application

    ▪ Medical Insurance It is compulsory for student to purchase the local insurance

    coverage policy from the EMGS’s appointed panel for the

    endorsement of student pass

    ▪ Post-arrival medical screening

    The charges for the above-mentioned matters are as per

    the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Please

    refer to EMGS website for further details.

    ± MYR800 to MYR 2000 per month (approx. USD 190 to USD

    500 per month)

    Fees & Cost of Living

    Student Visa Information

    The offer of admission to the UM mobility program DOES NOT come with the Student Visa

    which is strictly required by the Malaysian Immigration Department (MID) for students to

    enter and study in Malaysia. Application of Visa Approval Letter (VAL) and payment of

    related immigration charges can be done via the EMGS website at

    http://educationmalaysia.gov.my.

    Failure to adhere to the visa application procedures may result in the delay of admission

    to the University or retraction of admission. Processing time for the visa takes about eight

    (8) weeks upon submission of complete document.

    activities whether organised by ISC, students themselves or

    by external parties with the objective of further adding

    values and experience in students’ life on campus. The list

    The Grading Scheme for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs is different.

    For Undergraduate Program:

    (1) The official University grades including the marks and their meaning are as follows:

    (2) All courses shall be assessed using grade A+ to F.

    (3) The passing grade for all courses is grade C.

    For Postgraduate Program:

    (1) The assessment of examinations for postgraduate program by coursework shall be based on the following grading scheme:

    (2) All courses shall be assessed using grade A+ to F.

    (3) The passing grade for all courses is grade B.
