What is Universal Design?

Universal Design is a way of structuring something so that everyone can use it to their fullest potential.

For example, having handicapped accessible entrances is universal design, as it allows everyone access to a building.

How is Universal Design Used in Learning?

Universal Design is used in learning to allow every student to learn to their fullest potential, despite disabilities, second-language learning, or different learning styles.

Multiple Representations

Represent concepts in multiple ways, beyond just words or text.

For example, in math, use word problems and physical objects that learners can manipulate

Multiple Means of Action and Expression

Provide students with a number of ways to express what they learn.

For example, give them a written option, drawn option, spoken option, for a particular homework assignment.

Use multiple ways of instruction, to get students interested in and motivated to learn.
