From the Desk of the Principal – 2019 Term 4

Mdm Aini Maarof

Dear Parents,

Time flies very fast. It is almost the end of the academic

year.

The GCE ‘N’ Level and End of Year Examinations have just

ended. The GCE ‘O’ Level exams have just begun. I am

heartened by the commitment and perseverance shown

by our staff, as well as our students in their preparation for

these examinations. I wish all our graduating students

success in their future endeavours.

Our Sec 1, 2 and 3 students have completed their End of

Year Exams and have received their results.

Congratulations to students who have done well!

For those who have yet to do well, do not be discouraged.

Learn from the experience and think about what can be

done differently in your preparation for the next round of

examinations.

Embrace the ‘Growth Mindset’; any failure and

disappointment are critical steps in achieving one’s goals.

3.3 Cyber Wellness Reminder for Students and Parents

With the school holidays approaching, many students may be increasing their use of the Internet for

principles:

1. Respect self and others

2. Safe and responsible use

3. Positive peer influence

When spending time online during the school holidays, it is important to be aware of good practices to

keep your child safe online. Good online habits are important to keep our accounts and devices safe

from cyber threats such as malware, spam, phishing, and hacking attacks.

Strategic Thrust 4: High Care, Strong Discipline, Actualising Potential Through high level of care from the school, our students exude strong discipline and are able to

realise their potential

4.1 Holistic Health Education

What Is A Healthy Weight? How to Achieve A Healthy Weight?

To have a healthy weight, you must first understand the dangers of obesity. Obesity is a condition where

excess body fat accumulates and puts you at risk of a variety of health problems. This excess fat may reduce

life expectancy and increase your risk for other health problems so it is important to maintain a healthy

weight.

Know Your BMI

There are many ways to measure body fat. However, the simplest is by calculating your Body Mass Index

(BMI). BMI measures the relationship between your weight and height to measure the amount of body fat

you have. The higher your BMI, the higher the amount of fat in your body.

The Effects of Obesity

It is important to maintain a healthy weight to reduce your likelihood of developing one of these chronic

diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, certain cancers, bone and joint

disorders. Losing weight is not only healthy for your body but also your mind. When you look better, you feel

better about yourself. This can give you more confidence to do things you never thought you could.

The Basics Of A Healthy, Successful Weight Management Programme

Losing Weight the Right Way

Weight management is all about energy balance. To maintain your weight, you must balance the amount

of energy you get from food and drinks with the amount of energy your body uses for daily physical activity.

Consuming more energy than you need will lead to weight gain, while burning more energy than you

consume will lead to weight loss.

Calories in > Calories out = Weight gain

Calories in < Calories out = Weight loss

Calories in = Calories out = Weight management

Make It A Lifestyle

Successful weight management is a lifestyle. Any healthy weight management plan should incorporate the

principles of healthy eating and active living. These habits should become something you grow to enjoy

and can include in your daily life. Changing your diet alone or becoming more physically active without

eating healthier foods will not be as effective as doing both at the same time. Here are two tips which will

help you manage your weight healthily.

1. Set Smart Weight Loss Goals

SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Write down these goals so

you can monitor your progress over time.

2. Track Your Progress

A good weight management plan should also include regular monitoring of your progress and

maintenance of the weight loss in the long-term. Reviewing your progress can help you identify what things

you have done well and what things you struggle with. For example, you may be doing at least 150 minutes

of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week but find it difficult to make healthier meal choices. Knowing

this can help you reassess your action plan. You should also regularly review your goals to see if they are

realistic. Not everyone follows the same weight loss pattern so you may have to adjust your target in order

to reach your goal.

(Taken from “What is a Healthy Weight” by Health Promotion Board)

4.2 Career Guidance Programme

As part of a continued effort to build teachers’ capacity to guide and advise students on education and

career guidance, we will be conducting annual ECG learning journeys for staff and PSG, to the following

5.5 Safety Updates

With the school holidays round the corner, students will be embarking on various sporting and other physical

activities. Below are some safety tips worth taking note of.

5.5.1 Safety Tips for Cyclists

Protect your head from injury by wearing a safety helmet

Use elbow pads and knee pads to cushion the impact of a fall

Wear proper shoes and make sure that the laces are always tied properly

Do not wear bell bottom and baggy pants as this could get entangled with the pedals and other

moving parts

Remember These When Using the Road

Act as if you’re a pedestrian – look right, left and then right again. When the road is clear, push

your bicycle across for better safety

Use hand signals to warn other road users when you stop. Place the left foot on the ground and

alight from the left side of the road

Be extra alert at road junctions – these are accident-prone areas

Stop your bicycle completely at “Give Way” and “Stop” signs

Before crossing at junctions with traffic lights, always look to confirm there are no vehicles coming

from the left and right

DO NOT carry a pillion rider

DO NOT ride in a zigzag manner

DO NOT carry things, walk a dog, hold an umbrella, or otherwise occupy one hand while cycling

DO NOT risk injuries by doing dangerous stunts

5.5.2 Safety Tips For Swimmers

DO NOT swim if you are feeling unwell or recovering from illness

WEAR appropriate swimming attire for personal safety and modesty

Never push others into the pool

When using water slides, always go feet first

Before diving or sliding, check to be sure that other swimmers are out of the way

Swimming equipment and any other devices that affect other patrons’ safety or cause property

damage are not allowed in the pool, including inflatable giant floats, flippers, snorkel, etc.

In the event of lightning, thunder or other hazardous condition, you are required to leave the open

area immediately

5.6 Date of School Reopening in 2019

The first day of school in 2019 is 02 January (Thursday). All students are to report punctually at 7.20 am in the
