United Way of Palm Beach County

• History: United Way has been supporting local human service programs that achieve measurable results for more than 80 years.

• Mission: The mission of United Way of Palm Beach County is to improve measurably the lives of individuals and families in Palm Beach County by uniting the resources of donors, volunteers, agencies and the community.

United Way of Palm Beach County

• United Way raises money to support human services programs through individuals, workplace campaigns, grants and leadership gifts.

• In the past ten years alone, more than $100 million has been raised and distributed locally and regionally.

• United Way strives to achieve meaningful impact through its investments in programs.

• United Way is also a partner, convener and leader of local and regional collaboratives.

Community Care Fund

• The Community Care Fund – unrestricted donations, used to invest in strategies that provide solutions to some of Palm Beach County’s most critical needs.

• Used to support human-services programs that are run by local nonprofits and that directly benefit Palm Beach County’s most needy residents.

• Used to fund programs that provide measurable, meaningful, lasting results.

Funding Focus Areas

• In 2009, United Way of Palm Beach County engaged in a strategic planning process that will guide our work through 2014.

• United Way is committed to supporting efforts within the three Targeted Care Areas (TCA) of education, income and health.

• Based on the input of our community (subject matter experts, funded agencies, and donors), we identified funding strategies within each of the TCAs.

Education

• Educational attainment is a significant predictor of whether children and youth will achieve their potential to attain economic self-sufficiency.

Education

Focus on quality, best-practice programsthat serve low-income youth and youngadults in the out-of-school setting andprovide:

•Literacy education and academic support services primarily for middle and high school-aged youth and/or

•Services for youth transitioning from high school to work and/or college (up to age 24).

Education

Targeted Outcomes:

• Increase the number of students who graduate from high school on time

• Increase the number of 18-24 year-olds who successfully make the transition from high school to work and/or college.

Income

• Given the current economic climate, many local families struggle to meet their most basic needs.

• Many also struggle with maintaining their financial stability over the long term.

Income

Focus on quality, best-practice programs that servelow-income individuals and families and provide:

•Basic needs services (e.g., food, shelter, and emergency needs) for those in crisis and services designed to assist with accessing basic needs services and benefits programs (through screening and enrollment support) such as Medicaid, Medicare, and food stamps) and/or

•Comprehensive financial stability services, particularly for those with incomes at or below 80% of Palm Beach County’s Median Family Income (80% of MFI equates to $54,080).

Income

Targeted Outcomes:

• Increase the ability of low-income residents and families to meet their basic needs.

•Improve the ability of low-income residents and families to increase their financial stability, income, savings, and assets.

Health

• With increasing unemployment in Palm Beach County, the number of low-income, uninsured residents has increased dramatically, making it difficult for them to access quality health care that is comprehensive and readily available.

Health

Focus on quality, best-practice programs that servelow-income, uninsured residents and provide:

•Health insurance enrollment services (i.e., benefits screening and enrollment support) and assistance with identifying and gaining entrance to comprehensive health care services and/or

•Comprehensive health care services (e.g., primary health care, oral health, mental health, and health education services) offered through structures such as community health centers, physician-led systems of care, and free clinics.

Targeted Outcomes

•Increase the ability of low-income, uninsured residents to access health insurance and quality, comprehensive health care services.

•Increase the availability and use of quality, comprehensive health care services by low-income residents.

Funds Available

• Amount of funding available through this RFP is contingent on the funds donated to the CCF through June 30, 2011.

• In 2010, approximately $3.7 million was awarded in support of programs through the CCF.

• Project/budget period: Funding awards are for 1 year, with possibility for renewal funding annually for up to two additional years (and contingent upon CCF funds available).
