Thank you for electing me as your District

EXECUTIVE OFFICER

D/Lt/C Sam Bonilla, AP [email protected]

Thank you for this

opportunity to serve District 22

as your Executive Officer. I’m

looking forward to an exciting year ahead, working

with your new Bridge and D/C Ted Reiss, SN in

making our district the best of the best in America’s

Boating Club®.

Well, we are off to a great start with the

completion of our 2019 Spring Conference. We

offered interesting roundtables, a very productive

and informative Commanders Meeting, and

presented many well-earned awards to our

squadrons and some of its members. Thanks to all

the award winners (listed in this newsletter)! Your

district appreciates your hard work and recognizes

your efforts in supporting the organization’s goals

and values with efforts clearly above normal

expectations. Congratulations!

One of the committees in my department

that I am looking forward to working with is

Cooperative Charting, headed by D/Lt Jim Strothers,

SN. Cooperative Charting is a major public service

activity of many of the squadrons in our district and

of great importance. However, Jim reports that

National has not renewed the MOU agreement with

NOAA due to member liability issues. As a result,

the National Board of Directors has notified the

National committee that NO reports be submitted to

NOAA due to these liability concerns. If issues are

resolved to both parties satisfaction, then National is

open to revisiting the opportunity for submissions

with NOAA. Jim will continue to monitor this

situation and will inform us as soon as this problem

is resolved. If you have any concerns or questions,

please feel free to contact Jim at

[email protected].

Another public service activity our

squadrons are involved with is our Vessel Safety

Check (VSC) program. While both of these

programs are big contributors in maintaining us safe

on the water, VSC’s go a bit further by offering us an 2019-2020 D22 Bridge

opportunity to talk directly with the boat owners. In

fact, in talking to some of our squadron Commanders,

many of them are conducting Vessel Safety Check

initiatives during this month’s National Safe Boating

Week, 18 – 24 May 2019.

Here are some cool statistics. In just 4

months into the VSC season, our examiners have

completed 2,364 checks, or 37% of the overall National

total! A major accomplishment by 137 district-wide

VSE’s. Would you believe the next highest district in

National only has 606 vessel safety checks to date?

Amazing! Thank you for working hard in keeping our

boating community safe on the water!

VSE Lt Eugene Kent, S with a satisfied VSC customer.

ADMINISTRATIVE

OFFICER

D/Lt/C Clifford L. Schmidt, JN

[email protected]

I would like to thank all of

the D22 members for electing me as

the D22 Administrative Officer.

Thank you to all my Manatee Sail & Power Squadron

friends that attended the Change of Watch. A little bit

of my background. My wife, Carolyn and I moved to

Palmetto 6 years ago from Mound, MN. We live on

the water and enjoy exploring the West coast of

Florida in our 31’ Sea Ray. I am a full-time marine

accident investigator / surveyor traveling nationally

and internationally.

I look forward to this new exciting role within

the USPS organization as part of the D22 Bridge, I am

here to assist you and your squadron in the many

new and exciting changes coming to USPS in the

future.

The Administrative Department is

responsible for activities that are within the district,

including some of the following: District

Conferences, District Awards, Membership, Member

Involvement, Member Benefits, Squadron

Development, Boating Activities, and Operations

Training. To accomplish this responsibility, I have

dedicated members with great in-site to assist me

with these departments and making the

Administrative Department run smooth. Thank you

for joining the Administrative Department team.

In the following year the Administrative

Department has some great activities. One of the big

ones is the fall conference. This conference will also

encompass the annual D22 C&R. The C&R will be at

Fisherman’s Village, Punta Gorda, FL 2-4 October

2019. The fall conference will be at the Charlotte

County Event Center, Punta Gorda, FL 4-5 October.

The C&R committee and the conference committee

are working to make this a great joint opportunity

involving both activities. Hope to see you there by

water or land. More information to come!

Speaking of conferences if you have a round

table presentation you would like to present at a

conference, let me know. We have a lot of talented

people in the district that I am sure could present a

topic.

You are all aware of the new USPS Branding, I

hope all squadrons take advantage of the new look and

the national name recognition. We are working on

updating web sites, newsletters and logos. If you or your

squadron has any questions, please do not hesitate to

ask or send me an idea.

SAFE BOATING Wear your PFD, Carry a 406EPIRB and keep an eye on the weather

EDUCATIONAL OFFICER D/Lt/C John R. Nason, SN

[email protected]

This time last year I asked

that those of you who are

knowledgeable in the subjects

taught by USPS to get involved in teaching and share

your expertise with students taking our courses. I

hope some of you accepted the challenge and joined

the ranks of our teachers. I again make the call for

more help in our educational programs.

Nancy and I recently purchased a new boat.

We will be using our knowledge gained in squadron

courses to learn how to operate all the systems on

board. After learning how to navigate with the chart

plotter, our next job will be to make sure the air

conditioner works properly. A necessity in the

Florida summer.

We are also making plans to attend the

Governing Board meeting in Louisville this coming

September. It looks like a great venue to visit and site

see. I am looking forward to learning about the new

course materials that will be coming along in the near

future and bringing that information back to D22

squadrons at the Fall Conference.

I hope you all have a great summer with lots

of boating. See you in the Fall and we can swap sea

stories.

THANK YOU to the D22 members that recently participated in our annual District cruise. The group totaled 85 of which 40 were our D22 members. This year’s adventure was something a bit different in that we sailed on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. The itinerary was Nassau, Bahamas, St Thomas and St Maarten. Most of these ports were familiar stops but the ship itself is a destination in its own right. From zip-lining, surfing, and rock climbing to fabulous shows, shopping, numerous musical venues or just

strolling through Central Park or Boardwalk, everyone had options galore to enjoy.

The group was given a Scavenger Hunt clue sheet prior to getting onboard that was designed to help guests get acclimated more quickly to the ship with its numerous neighborhoods and venues. The next afternoon, our group enjoyed an exclusive cocktail party where they mingled amongst one another while listening to the results of the Scavenger Hunt. The team of Andrea Battaglia, her daughter Nan, and granddaughters Brittany and Taylor won the prizes for having all the correct answers.

In case you didn’t know, this annual cruise has been done for several years now as a fundraiser for the District as well as Squadrons who participate. The check this year was for $2142.09 and was presented to the Treasurer during the April conference.

Don’t miss out on NEXT year’s cruise on the BRAND NEW Holland America ship, the beautiful Nieuw Statendam. The itinerary is Half Moon Cay, Bahamas; Grand Turk, Amber Cover, Dominican Republic; and Key West. Dates are 16-23 Feb 2020 immediately following the Annual Meeting. Please contact Lt Dawn Eckhart at: [email protected] or (727) 403-0406 to sign up today with either the current promotion or our great group pricing!
