Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10-11 Sermon: Spiritual Gifts Rev. James W. Stevens
I’m excited about the first months of this year. Lots of reasons, I suppose, but largely because of the message subjects, which will be focused on spiritual gifts. This was a dictate (by vote!) of the annual conference – that in the 2017/2018 conference year, each pastor would instruct the people of her or his church in the subject of the Holy Spirit: Spiritual gifts in particular. I’m not always wholeheartedly behind the “dictates” of the conference – if I’m not, it’s because they are mandates without a real sense of how, or sometimes the possibility of compliance. In this case, I’m really excited, because not only CAN we do this, but as I anticipate the work of God in this place in the coming year, I’m convinced it is not only necessary, but will be a gift of great value to all of us!The purpose of spiritual gifts is the empowerment of the church by God – the reality of His presence and action in and among us, all for His kingdom’s good. Considering that we are a part of that kingdom, it is clearly a blessing to us as followers of Christ. If we are in Christ, then spiritual gifts are to be expected. Not all are visually or mentally stunning, but all are equally important in the overall health and welfare of the body of Christ. Some of you may be well aware of your gifts, some of you may be really wondering, but the good news is, as we talk, and teach and learn together, it will begin to come together, and for those who are interested, we will finish up with the opportunity to do further exploration with a spiritual gift inventory that will help define that.God loves this church, and all His children in it. You have a place and a purpose that God has chosen, and we are going to affirm that together. You do NOT want to miss this! Come and worship, come and learn, and come and share the Spiritual gifts God has put within you!
Love in Christ,
JamieRev. Stevens
