Many people have asked how to indicate their pledge to the Connecting in Faith Campaign so that the money is credited correctly. To assure that your contributions go to the proper accounts, please indicate on the memo line of your check or on your giving envelope as follows:
Capital Improvements (ongoing maintenance) = Cap. Improv.
Connecting in Faith (capital campaign) = Bldg Fund
If there is no indication on the check or envelope, the monies will go directly into the ministry budget, even if you have pledged only to the Connecting in Faith Campaign.
For contributions to come out of your automatic withdrawal, please contact Mary Jane in the office (776-8821 or [email protected]). Withdrawals are made on the 5th and the 20th of each month and will be set up accordingly.

• That youth’s hearts would be touched and softened by the Holy Spirit
Thank You!

Know a CDL Driver?
The youth as well as other areas in the church are on the lookout for CDL drivers. As many of you may have noticed, we have a beautiful yellow school bus, but do not always have drivers for it. If you have a CDL license and would be interested in being on our volunteer driver list, give us a call at 776-8821 or shoot us an e-mail at [email protected].
Seeking new volunteer leaders
The youth program is currently seeking volunteers who are willing to commit approximately ten hours a week to working with the youth. There are many service opportunities available for volunteers including: youthgroup, macho and gog (small group meetings), office hours, FCA, and other youth events. If you or anyone you know has a heart of working with youth, please contact Nathan at [email protected]. If you don’t know anyone but would like to still help, please join us in prayer as we prayerfully seek out these leaders.
In a few short weeks, the youth will enter that glorious time of their lives known as summer break. They are in luck because the youth group has a lot planned for this summer. Here is a look into some of those activities.
Institute: Institute is a spiritual life retreat hosted by the Kansas East Conference. Senior High youth travel to Baker University to meet new friends and grow in their relationships with God. This year is especially exciting because it is the 100th anniversary of Institute.
Youth 2011: This is essentially the Olympics of youth gatherings. This event only happens every 4 years. This year our youth are traveling to Purdue University to meet other United Methodist youth from around the nation. This is an amazing opportunity for them to see how many other youth are out there living their lives for God.
Gearing up for Summer!

On Friday, April 8, the confirmands headed to Kansas City for the annual confirmation retreat. They had a blast getting to know each other better, making banners, playing games, creating a class creed, and learning more about God’s love for them. Along the way we sorted and boxed food at Harvesters International and stopped at the T-Rex restaurant to grab a bite to eat. A big thank you to Mikki Minocha and John Pearsall. who came with us (Nathan and Rev. Kay) as volunteer leaders. Thank You!
Fun at Newsboys Concert
On Sunday evening, April 17, some of our youth traveled to Topeka to see the Newsboys, Kutless, and Disciple in concert. On the way there the youth quickly learned that Nathan had no idea where he was going, but the group made it there safely and had a blast. The Newsboys put on quite a show, and a highlight for everyone was when the drummer and his drums were lifted into the air on the platform. Then the platform tipped sideways and started spinning with the drummer harnessed in and playing the whole time. It was an amazing thing to see.

Next Mission Trip to Anapra, Mexico
We are working to coordinate a June trip to Anapra to put up the building that we took down during the spring break trip. The dates have not been set yet as we are working around the last days of school in Anapra. We do have the window of time as sometime in the last two weeks of June. We are giving some thought to straddling a weekend so that some people might be able to join us if they could not be away from their jobs for a whole week. If you have questions or are interested in this type of mission work, contact Lynn Blecha at 539-6640 or [email protected]) or Rev. Nancy at 776-8821 or [email protected]. Whether you are able to go or not, please pray for this trip, for those whom God is calling to go, for the Susanna Wesley School, and for the Briones family.
Update: Fair-Trade Products Fair trade products support sustainable agriculture.
This spring, customers will note small price increases, due largely to the increased cost of transportation, as follows:
• There will be no increase on 10/12-oz. coffee products.
• 5-lb. coffees will increase 50 cents/lb. to $44.50. Products are sold to you the consumer at cost to the church.
Other factors contributing to price increases include: 1) global warming and climate changes affecting crops; 2) commodity market speculation for organic and fairly traded coffee, and 3) middlemen, who offer higher cash prices in an effort to diminish farmer-based co-ops. Shipping charges for products also have been restructured. The Equal Exchange Fair Trade system also is helping to empower women; many are coffee producers, and many also work in the fields to feed their families. As members of the Fair Trade Cooperative, women working in agriculture can take advantage of educational opportunities and grow in leadership within their community and the Cooperative, while also working to build economic security and access health care. First United Methodist Church members, guests and visitors have boosted sales of Fair Trade products in recent months, and the Mission Committee urges your continuing support for Fair Trade – and good taste.
Shepherd’s Crossing Honors C. Clyde Jones
At the dinner celebrating the 10th anniversary of Shepherd’s Crossing, our own C. Clyde Jones was surprised by the announcement of the creation of an endowment fund to honor his dedicated service to Shepherd’s Crossing. Clyde was a board member from 2001–07, served as Vice President for two years and President for two years. In 2005, Clyde went to a grant writing workshop for Compassion Kansas grantors. Shepherd’s Crossing received their first grant that year for Strategic Planning. Clyde currently serves as the Development Officer. If you would like to contribute to this fund to honor Clyde, contact Shepherd’s Crossing (776-1470) or write a check made payable to FUMC with “SC Jones Endowment” in the memo line.
