SC.O.2.2.15: Describe daily and seasonal weather changes

SC.O.2.2.14: observe and describe different types of precipitation

M.2.MD.10: draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories and solve simple put- together, take-apart and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

CCSS Math.2.OA.1: use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g. by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Lesson One: Students demonstrate creativity by choosing images and creating their own “Animoto” video.

Lesson Two: During part of the blog activity, students create their own sentences using weather vocabulary.

Lesson Three: Students create picture graphs on poster paper. Students also can alter their graphs’ colors and features on the Microsoft Excel activity as long as it’s still a bar graph with the correct data.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:

Lesson One: Students will answer questions throughout the lesson that involves critical thinking, such as: How does weather affect our lives?

Lesson Two: Students will answer questions throughout lesson and fill out a KWL chart.

Lesson Three: Students will be asked questions about graphs and data throughout the lesson. Students will have to solve mathematical equations to answer questions about graphs.

21st Century Skills Continued

Communication & Collaboration:

Lesson One: Students work in pairs during Digital Images Project. Students will collaborate to choose images and share why they are choosing their images. Students also collaborate to answer questions on the Blog assignment.

Lesson Two: Students “pair share” their worksheets during Video 2 Activity. Students also collaborate on blogs. During the follow-up activity, students work in groups of four to match vocabulary with images and descriptions.

Lesson Three: Students work in pairs to create bar and picture graphs, as well as answer questions about the graphs and data.

be asked questions through the lesson. Example: How does weather affect our lives?

be asked questions throughout the lesson. Students will complete a worksheet that goes along with the second video.

KWL chart- Students will complete this during and after viewing a weather vocabulary video.

Lesson Three: Questioning (informal)- Students will be asked

questions throughout the lesson. Two Graphing Activities (One informal)- Students will

practice drawing picture and bar graphs showing precipitation data.

Microsoft Excel Activity- After given a set of data, students will make a bar graph on a laptop or computer.

Test- a formative test that will demonstrate students’ knowledge of bar and picture graphs.

Assessments
