BASIC CONCEPTS

• PROJECT [DEFINITION] :

It is an Individual or Collaborative Enterprise, possibly

involving research or design, that is carefully planned, by a

project team to Achieve a particular Aim.

• PROJECT MANAGEMENT [DEFINITION] :

It is the discipline of Initiating, Planning, Executing,

Controlling and Closing the work of a team to achieve specific

goals and meet specific success criteria.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT LIFE CYCLE

UNIT 3 : PROJECT PLANNING 6

This is the phase in which the deliverables are physically built and presented to the customer for acceptance.

While each deliverable is being constructed, a suite ofmanagement processes are undertaken to monitor and controlthe deliverables being output by the project.

These processes include managing time, cost, quality, change, risks, issues, suppliers, customers and communication.

Once all the deliverables have been produced and the customer has accepted the final solution, the project is ready for closure.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT LIFE CYCLE (2)

UNIT 3 : PROJECT PLANNING 8

• STEP-1 : PROJECT INITIATION

- Involves starting up the project, by documenting a business case, feasibility

study, terms of reference, appointing the team and setting up a Project

Office.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT LIFE CYCLE (3)

UNIT 3 : PROJECT PLANNING 10

• STEP-2 : PROJECT PLANNING

- Involves setting out the roadmap for the project by creating the following

plans: project plan, resource plan, financial plan, quality plan, acceptance

plan and communications plan.

Page 11: UNIT NO : 3 PROJECT PLANNING - WordPress.com

PROJECT MANAGEMENT LIFE CYCLE (4)

• STEP-3 : PROJECT

EXECUTION

- It is the unique activity which is

directed by the Project Manager.

- Cost of Project Execution is

directly proportional to the

Procurement [The Act of Buying

Services] in terms of H/W & S/W.

- Goal : To Create the Product that

will satisfy the End-User.

• STEP-4 : PROJECT MONITORING & CONTROLLING

- Involves controlling the project delivery, scope, costs, quality, risks and

issues.

- Quality Control Activities can be planned & conducted to ensure the

Quality of the Product.

- This Activity help the Project Developers to Find & Fix the Errors.

• STEP-5 : PROJECT CLOSURE

- Involves winding-down the project by releasing staff, handing over

deliverables to the customer and completing a post implementation review.

PLANNING SCOPE MANAGEMENT

• SCOPE [DEFINITION] :

All the Work Involved in creating the Products of the Project

& the Processes used to create them.

• DELIVERABLES [DEFINITION] :

Product Created as part of the Project. It can be Product

Related such as H/W or S/W.

• PROJECT SCOPE MANAGEMENT [DEFINITION] :

Includes the Processes involved in Defining and Controlling

what work is or is not included in Project.

CREATING WORK BREAKDOWN

STRUCTURE [1]

UNIT 3 : PROJECT PLANNING 18

• WBS [DEFINITION] :

It is Deliverable Oriented Grouping of work involved in the

Project.

Purpose : To Define the Scope of the Project.

• CONCEPT OF WBS :

It is Created after Collecting Requirements & Defining The

Scope.

Uses “Decomposition Technique” . Project is decomposed into

manageable chunks.

Example : Website Building

CREATING WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE [4]

UNIT 3 : PROJECT PLANNING 21

• ADVANTAGES OF WBS:

Higher Productivity.

More Detailed Steps.

Encourage Accountability & Transparency.

Better Risk Identification & Minimization.

Better Progress Monitoring

• WBS DICTIONARY :

A WBS dictionary is a document that provides a detailed

information about each element in the WBS, including work

packages and control accounts.

When stakeholders read these detailed descriptions in the

WBS dictionary, they get a much better understanding of the

scope of work because of their context within the WBS

hierarchy of elements .
