IntroductionIn this unit, you will learn about East Asian countries specifically China,

Japan, and Korea. These countries have been noted for their numeroussimilarities and commonalities in their art production, artistic traditions, andprinciples of arts as influenced by their history, beliefs, religion, location,culture, and dynasty.

This unit will introduce you to the arts and crafts of China, Japan, andKorea such as painting, calligraphy, pottery, paper kites, knot tying,woodblock printing, ukiyo - e, and paper cutting.

Vocabulary

Landscape painting - Also known as landscape art, is the depiction of landscapes inart—natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially wherethe main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent composition.

Calligraphy - A visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with abroad-tipped instrument, brush, or other writing instrument.

Subjects are divided in to five categories:

Important Aspects in East Asian Painting

Landscape painting was regarded as the highest form of Chinese painting.They also consider the three concepts of theri arts: Heaven, Earth, andHumankind (Yin-Yang). Chinese society, basically agricultural, has alwayslaid great stress on understanding the pattern of nature and living in

accordnace with it. Oriental artists often created landscapes rather thanpaintings with the human figure as subjects.

Silk was often used as the medium to paint upon, but ut was quite expensive.When the Han court eunuch, Cai Lun, invented paper in the 1st century AD, itprovided not only a cheap and widespread medium for writing but paintingbecame more economical.

Image 1. Chinese art expresses the human understanding of the relationship between natureand humans. This is evident in the form of painting of landscapes, bamboo, birds, and flowers,etc. This might be called the metaphysical, Daoist aspect of Chinese painting.Six Principles of Chinese Painting by Xie He, a writer, art historian, andcritic in 5th century in China.

1. Observe rhythm and movements.2. Leave spaces for the eyes to rest.3. Use brush in calligraphy.4. Use colors correctly.5. Live up to tradition by copying the master’s artwork.6. Copy the correct proportion of the objects and nature.

The history of Korean painting dates to 108CE, when it first appears as an independentform. It is said that until the Joseon Dynastythe primary influence of Korean paintingswere Chinese paintings. However, Koreanpaintings have subjects such as landscapes,facial features, Buddhist topics, and anemphasis on celestial observation in keepingwith the rapid development of Koreanastronomy.

Direction: List down all the subjects that you see in the painting and write yourinterpretation in a one whole sheet of paper.

For the first container:Mix two spoons of coffee powderwith 3 spoons of water. Mix itwell to get a medium color.

For the second container:Mix two spoons of coffee powderwith 2 spoons of water. Mix itwell to get a dark coffee color.

1. Trace a design on oslo orwatercolor paper.

2. Apply medium color paint tobe the base of any picture.

3. Apply the dark color paint todo the darker shadings andoutlines. Darker shade gives aglossy effect to the picture. Ifyou want a lighter shade, justmix few more drops or water.

4. When the whole painting isdone, apply with natural varnishcoating.

Calligraphy

To the Chinese, calligraphy isthe art of beautifuil handwriting.Traditional painting involvesesentially the same techniquesas calligraphy and is done witha brush dipped in black orclored ink, oils are not used. Incalligraphy, the popularmaterials which paintings aremade of are paper and silk.Poets write their calligraphy ontheir paintings.

Paintings can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or hand scrolls,walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.

Learning Task 3: Print Me a Message

Direction: Write your message for a friend in Chinese, Japanese calligraphy,or Hangul (Korean writing) in oslo or watercolor paper. Add your nickname atthe bottom of the page with the use of a Chinese brush and watercolor. Youmay add borders similar to the designs of Chinese paper arts.

Lesson 2 - East Asian Architecture

East Asian temples and houses havesweeping roofs because they believe that itwill protect them from the elements ofwater, wind, and fire. Buddhits believedthat it helped ward off evil spirits whichwere deemed to be straight lines. Thefigures at the tips are called roof guards.

There are three main types of roofs in traditional Chinese architecture thatinfluenced other Asian architecture:zaz1. Straight Inclined - These are moreeconomical for common Chinesearchitecture.

2. Multi - inclined - roofs with two or moresections inclined. These roofs are used forresidences of wealthy Chinese.

3. Sweeping - have curves that rise at thecorners of the roofs. These are usuallyreserved for temples and palaces althoughthese may also be found in the homes of thewealthy Chinese. Originally, the ridges of theroofs are usually highly decorated withceramic figurines.

Lesson 3 - Arts & Crafts

Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images, or patterns usedwidely throughout East Asia. It originated in China as a method of printing ontextiles but eventually became a method for printing on paper.This method was adapted in Japan during the Edo period (1603 - 1867) andbecame one of their oldest and most highly developed visual arts.

The most common theme in Japan for printmaking describes scenes fromeveryday life. It narrates the scene and is often packed with figures and detail.

Japanese Ukiyo - e

The best known and most popular style of Japanese art is ukiyo - e, which isJapanese for “pictures of the floating world” and it is related to the style ofwoodblock print making that shows scenes of harmony and carefree everydayliving. Ukiyo - e art was produced in a diversity of different media, includingpainting and became an art domain of the upper classes and royalty but laterwas also produced by the common people.

Paper Arts of China and Japan

Paper was first invented by Cai Lun of the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. It isindeed one of the greatest contributions of ancient China in the developmentof arts.

The term origami came from “ori”meaning “folding” and “kami” meaningpape.” It is the traditional Japaneseart of paper folding, which started in17th century AD and was popularized

include burning yuanbao which is afolded paper that looks like goldnuggets or ingots called sycee.

Today, imitation gold sycees are usedas a symbol of prosperity by Chineseand are frequently displayed duringthe Chinese New Year.
