A LETTER FROM THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEFDear readers,

Welcome back to school- it’s that time of year again and UNIT-E is excited to be joining you for a second year. We look forward to publishing more articles about subjects that you, the international students of Beijing, are interested in. In order to help us achieve that, please feel free to send your suggestions to [email protected], or relay the message to your school’s representative.

However, if you want to execute the idea yourself, why not join us? UNIT-E is always looking for new members to write, format, take photographs or look for sponsors. There is something in UNIT-E for everyone and signups are simple. Go to http://www.unit-echina.co.cc/ and look under the recruiting tab for application forms and more instructions.

If you’re interested in the field of journalism or publications as a whole, keep an eye out for UNIT-E’s upcoming Publication Workshop! To switch things up a little, we’ve decided to host it during the first half of the academic year and we hope that it’ll be even better than last year’s.

Yours faithfully, Heather Budimulia and Alice Anchisi

P.S. In the last issue, we didn’t manage to feature all the publications that so kindly provided all the information we requested. Turn to the Happenings column to peruse the stories and article excerpts from various school publications.

UNIT-E TRIVIA

Did you know that UNIT-E has a theme song?

Like our mascot, the unicorn, UNIT-E’s theme song is unofficial. However, its informal status does not diminish its value and plans are in motion to teach all staff members the lyrics as soon as possible. For those who were wondering, the song was first sung by Despicable Me’s Agnes and goes something like this: Unicorns I love them, Unicorns I love them, Uni-Uni-Unicorns, I loove them!

UNIT-E SERVICE PROJECT

A couple of weeks after UNIT-E was established, Dan, our previous Service Director, rented a small room in Baixingzhuang village. As the local children who live there are mainly migrants, they are unable to receive the best education in Beijing. Staying true to the UNIT-E vision of becoming a learning platform for community involvement, the UNIT-E Core Team decided to turn this room into a library and a study room for the children to use.

In the recent months, the library has improved in many areas. Firstly, we have received many new donations of books which we are very grateful for. The books came from many different book drives in UNIT-E affiliated schools. Secondly, the books in the library are better organized now. UNIT-E members worked to sort them into categories such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, young adults and early English learners.

Additionally, I’ve came up with rules and regulations in the library. Hopefully these rules will allow the children there to understand it is vital to be disciplined, clean up after themselves, return books, and respect everyone else. In addition, our Head of Finance, Junting, came up with a method to track borrowed materials. When someone wants to check out a book, all they have to do is just sign the book log.

Finally, I would like to thank anyone who has donated books or supplies to the library. These items play an instrumental role in helping children to empower themselves through education. I’m proud to say that our library is well-stocked, clean, and ready for learning to take place.

However, the library still requires more volunteers. If you would like to help, please contact me at [email protected].

UNIT-E Updates

Nicole Ng, a sophomore at the International School of Beijing, has taken over as Head of Service. Turn to the UNIT-E column and read her first service article; articles updating readers on the progress of the learning library will become a regular feature of every issue.

ABOUT UNIT-E

UNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.

UNIT-E’s VISION & PHILOSOPHY

UNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing.

Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.
