ABOUT UNIT-E UNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.

UNIT-E’S VISION AND PHILOSOPHY UNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing. Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEFDear Reader,

Welcome to the May/June issue of UNIT-E, and the last of the school year!

In the midst of hefty workloads and rapidly approaching exams, we’re hoping that you’ll remember to unwind and take regular breaks from your studying - keep in mind that sanity and adequate amounts of sleep are just as important as your grades. You can read about further methods to de-stress in our Academics column, on page 20 (and brush up in your Chinese at the same time!)

If you can’t free any time to delve into UNIT-E in these trying times, save this issue for the summer months. Check out our Happenings column for movies to look out for over the summer, or consider making Oreo bark from Chillax to alleviate unavoidable boredom over the break.

The May/June issue marks the time for inevitable departures - we have a number of graduating seniors who have been with UNIT-E for years, and we bid them farewell with utmost reluctance. UNIT-E will not be the same without them - they have shaped it and they have made it, fueled by a genuine desire to create and a common fascination with unicorns. It’s amazing to see how these creative minds have bridged the gap, time and time again, between a single collective vision and the monthly publication as we know it.

For the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and work alongside these other minds - people who have been my mentors, my inspiration, and above all, my fellow unicorns. From the bottom of my heart, I wish them the best of luck and I hope we’ll make them proud.

We’ll see you all in the 2013-2014 school year!
