Reported Speech

When you talk with someone there are 2 ways of doing it DIRECTLY

“I have lost my umbrella”INDIRECTLY

She said (that) she had lost her umbrella

Reported Speech

DIRECTLY“I have lost my umbrella”

INDIRECTLY She said (that) she had lost her umbrella

The first one is placed between inverted commas and can be found in conversations in books, plays or quotations.

Reported Speech

DIRECTLY“I have lost my umbrella”

INDIRECTLY She said (that) she had lost her umbrella

In the second one we explain what the speaker has said, not repeating his / her exact words.

(THAT) can be ommited and we use some verbs as SAY, TELL, EXPLAIN…to introduce our sentence

• She said, “My birthday party is tonight”• She said that her birthday party was that night

Appart from verbs, 1st and 2nd pronouns and possessive adjectives normally change

I ( HE / SHE ) “ I live in Paris” - She said that she lived in Paris

“ He loves me” - She said that he loved her

possessive adjectives, expression times usually change

TODAY (THAT DAY ) “ I am leaving TODAY” - She said that she was living THAT DAY

TOMORROW ( THE PREVIOUS DAY)

YESTERDAY ( THE PREVIOUS DAY)

NOW( THEN)

THIS ( THAT…)

“I am leaving TOMORROW” - She said that she was living THE PREVIOUS DAY

“she left YESTERDAY” - She said that she had left THE NEXT DAY

“ I’m leaving NOW” - She said that she was leaving THEN

“ I love THIS book” - They said that she loved THAT book

WHY?Because you are not going to repeat the conversation in that moment, maybe you will repeat it two days later

You will use this structure in

• ORDERS / REQUEST– “Shut up!!!!”

• STATEMENTS– “If you are not quiet you will be expelled”

• QUESTIONS– “Did you do your homework?”– “What are you doing with these scissors?”

The three of them have their own rules• ORDERS / REQUEST

– “Shut up!!!!”• He ordered us TO shut up

• STATEMENTS– “If you are not quiet you will be expelled”

• She told us THAT if we weren’t quiet we would be expelled

• QUESTIONS– “Did you do your homework?”

• She asked us IF I had done my homework

– “What are you doing with these scissors?”• She wanted to know WHAT I was doing with those scissors

• When you make and ORDER it can be either AFFIRMATIVE or NEGATIVE– “ Open the door! “– “ Close the window”– “ Don’t talk “– “ Don’t smoke “– “ Read more! “– “ Don’t drink alcohol! “

• When you make a REQUEST you usually use the word PLEASE and sometime the verb CAN

– “ Please don’t tell lies “– “ Please sit down “, the doctor said ( to me)– “ Please don’t smoke here”– “CAN I open the window, please?”– “ CAN you help me? “

REQUESTS AND ORDERS• When you repeat these orders in an indirect way you

usually use verbs as TOLD / ASK / SAY and this structure – “ Open the door! “

• She told us TO open the door

– “ Close the window”• He asked TO close the window

– “ Don’t talk “• The teacher ordered NOT TO talk

– “ Don’t smoke here“• The owner said to us NOT TO smoke there

– “ Read more! “• They told us TO read more

• When you make a REQUEST you usually use the word PLEASE and sometime the verb CAN– “ Please don’t tell lies “

STATEMENTS• When you repeat statements in an indirect way

you usually introduce your sentence with verbs such as TOLD / SAY and the word THAT (although it is optional)

• There are some rules you must understand• You don’t usually repeat the situation in that

moment, you will repeat it in the future, so you will talk about the past.

• Whatever you tell someone in a direct way using the present tense is going to be told in the past

• These are all present tenses (simple, perfect or continuous but present tenses)

• Just think about the first tense you find….– I LIVE in Paris– She IS working hard today– They HAVE bought a new house– I DON’T like this film– We ARE not studying French now

• If they are in the present, change them into the past tense ( SHE SAID that …)– she LIVED in Paris– She WAS working hard that day – They HAD bought a new house– She DIN’T LIKE that film– They WERE not studying French then

• Whatever you tell someone in a direct way using the past tense is going to be told in the past participle form ( had + participle)

• These are all past tenses (simple, perfect or continuous but past tenses)

• Just think about the first tense you find….– I LIVED in Paris last year– She WAS working hard yesterday– You HAD lost your keys when I saw you– I DIDN’T like that film

• If they are in the past , change them into the past perfect tense ( SHE SAID that …)– she HAD LIVED in Paris– She HAD BEEN working hard the previous day– I HAD lost my keys when she HAD SEEN me– She HADN’T LIKED that film

QUESTIONS• When you repeat questions in an indirect way

they get into affirmative sentences and they are usually introduced by your sentence with verbs such as ASK/ SAY

• In english there are two kind of questionsA. Yes / no questions

• “Do you like football?”– Yes , I do / No, I don’t

B. WH questions• “Where is your sister today?”

– I don’t know she told me she was with Mary

YES / NO QUESTIONS

• They are reported by using IF or WHETHER• And they are told in the affirmative way

– “Have you finished?”• She asked me IF I had finished

– “Did you watch the match yesterday?”• She asked me IF I had watched the math the previous day

– “Are you sleeping enough?”• She asked me IF I was sleeping enough

– “Does Paul want to help me painting?”• She asked me IF Paul wanted to help her

– “Will you marry me?” • He asked me IF I would marry him

• They are reported by using the WH word • And they are told in the affirmative way

– “When have you finished?”• She asked me WHEN I had finished

– “WHAT did you watch yesterday?”• She asked me WHAT I had watched the previous day

– “HOW are you sleeping?”• She asked me HOW I was sleeping

– “WHY does Paul want to help you painting?”• She asked me WHY Paul wanted to help me

Indirect questions

• Can / Could you tell me……• I’d like to know… This is how Indirect questions are introduced. They are used for being more polite or formal

for example That’s is amazing! How did you do that!• Can / could you tell me/ us how you did that • I’d like to know how you did that
