2. Grammar

A. Indefinite articles ‘a’ and ‘an’

(Refer to Basic English Grammar pg 84)

The words ‘a’ and ‘an’ are called indefinite articles. You can use

them with singular countable nouns to talk about any single

person or thing.

We use ‘a’ for singular countable nouns beginning with a

consonant.

We use ‘an’ for singular countable nouns beginning with a

vowel.

Vowels are : a, e, i, o and u.

Consonants are : b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x,

y and z.

Examples :

1. This is a picture of an elephant.

2. Rudy is reading a book.

3. Mum bought me a new dress today.

4. You will need an umbrella when you go out.

5. She eats an apple a day.

B. Interrogative Pronouns

The words, who, whom, whose, what and which are called

interrogative pronouns.

You use these pronouns to ask questions.

Whom is used in formal or written English instead of ‘who’ when it is

the object of a verb or preposition.

6. Which do you prefer?

7. Whose umbrella is this ?

8. Whose gloves are these ?

3. Phonemic Awareness

Beginning sounds: ch, sn, wh

Examples:

Sounds beginning with ch: chair, chalk, chick, children

Sounds beginning with sn: snake, snail, snap, snarl.

Sounds beginning with wh: whale, wheel, what, white

The fox went towards the mynah, stood under the tree and praised her for having a sweet voice. The mynah was very happy and started to sing. The meat dropped to the ground. The fox jumped on the meat and gobbled it up.

“Thank you for the meat,” said the fox with a sly smile. The mynah knew that she had been tricked.
