UNIDAD DIDCTICA 8: RATIO, PROPORTIONS AND PERCENTS. RAZON,

    PROPORCIONES Y PORCENTAJES

    RATIO - RAZON

A ratio shows the relative sizes of two or more values.

There are three grey squares to two white squares. We can write ratios in different ways:

    3 : 2 (three to 2) 3 es a 2. Por cada 3 hay 2

3/5 as a fraction (three over five) - tres sobre cinco que es el total.

0.75 as a decimal - como un decimal del total.

75% as a percentagecomo un porcentaje.

PROPORTIONPROPORCINWhen two fractions are equal to each other we can say that they are inproportion.Laigualdad de dos fracciones es una proporcin.

The quotient of the fractions is called theproportionality constant.El cociente de las fracciones se llama: constante de proporcionalidad.

When one of the four numbers in a proportion is unknown, cross products may beused to find the unknown number. This is called solving the proportion. Letters arefrequently used in place of the unknown number.

    Example: Solve for n

    Using cross products: 1 4 = 2 n ; 4 = 2 n; n = 2

    DIRECT PROPORTION PROPORCIONES DIRECTAS

There are relationships where as one quantity decreases the otherdecreases too. Or one quantity increases and the other increasestoo. When this type of relationship is satisfied we can say that the two quantitiesaredirectlyproportional.

    INVERSE PROPORTIONPROPORCIN INVERSA.

There are relationships where as one quantity decreases the other

    increases

When this type of relationship is satisfied we can say that the two quantities

    areinverselyproportional.

One example of this is when we travel by car. The faster the speed, the less

time it takes us to travel a certain distance.

    120 km/h ------------- 2 h

    60 km/h -------------- x h

    PERCENTAGE

    PORCENTAJE

A percentis a ratio of a number to 100. A percent is expressed usingthe symbol %.

A percent is also equivalent to a fraction with denominator 100.
